The death of a Midland teenager three days after she was discharged from hospital with suspected glandular fever is to be investigated by police.

Amy Carter, aged 15, had begged doctors not to send her home because she felt so ill, her family say.

The Stourport schoolgirl was told to take paracetamol and rest but had to be readmitted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital three days later when her condition deteriorated.

Amy had five heart attacks and died on Christmas Eve, and her devastated family have accused medics of missing a series of opportunities to save her life.

West Mercia Police today confirmed they were investigating Amy’s death which is being treated as “unexplained.”

A post mortem has already been carried out and the results of medical tests are awaited.

Police said the Worcestershire coroner had been informed and a full inquest would be held when the results were available.

Amy, of Santa Maria Way, was a pupil at Stourport High School, and a Facebook site set up in her honour has already received hundreds of hits.

Her father, Richard, said: “The number of tributes to her shows how popular she was. Amy was interested in everything. You name it and she loved it be it sports, music or anything. She will be deeply missed.”

Amy was taken ill at the start of December and was taken to a care centre in Kidderminster, where she was diagnosed with sinusitis and given antibiotics.
