Huddersfield 0 Albion 2

Saturday 2nd January 2010, 5:05PM GMT.

HUDDWBA 7 TT 02Graham Dorrans and Chris Wood booked Albion’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with late breakaway goals to settle a drab game at the Galpharm Stadium.

Dorrans made up for missing a first half sitter after bursting away to break the deadlock with 13 minutes to go.

Chris Brunt, who had fed Dorrans for the opener, claimed another assist picking out substitute Wood for an 82nd minute strike.

But for long spells a flat Albion had looked destined to face a replay against their spirited League One hosts.

Temperatures began to plummet as the sun disappeared during the first-half and there was little on the field to warm the spectators.

Albion had more of the ball but they were sloppy in possession and consequently struggled to fashion genuine chances.

In-form home striker Jordan Rhodes had the game’s first opportunity but screwed a far-post shot wide after Lee Novak’s flick-on.

Dorrans’ miss was the half’s most memorable incident, as the Scot escaped his marker to beat the offside trap and arrive at the far post to meet Chris Brunt’s cross, only to lift his shot over the bar from a couple of yards.

Brunt tried his luck twice from distance after cutting in from the right, but his first effort went over and his second was saved by goalkeeper Alex Smithies.

The second-half began in a similar vein to the first, but a chance eventually came at either end before the hour mark. Marek Cech hit the post for the Baggies with an excellent volley after a cross by Brunt.

Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson had to make a brave block to deny Gary Roberts, after the attacker found himself unmarked at the far post.

Moments later Michael Collins sent a shot wide from an excellent chance, after a left-wing cross and a lay-off from Anthony Pilkington.

But the breakthrough finally came on 77 minutes, as the Baggies broke from a Huddersfield corner through substitute Robert Koren.

The replacement found Brunt who delayed a pass perfectly to find the path of Dorrans, where the midfielder continued his lung-busting run and kept his composure to finish past Smithies.

It was 2-0 five minutes later, as Brunt beat the offside trap to meet Brunt’s through-ball before completing a cool finish.

Appalling conditions to drive through for much of the way and surely the slowest car park to get out of afterwards. The game was drab as said but the pitch was very hard as shown by the half time ‘falling on your bum’ competition. I also thought the floodlighting barely acceptable. Let’s hope for a home draw next round.

Odd game. We could have lost this had either of the 2 huddersfield chances in 2nd half had gone in. However, we were the better team and scored 2 good goals. Carson had a good game and nice to see Woods score.

We would have lost this under Mowbray I reckon. We ground a win from a below par performance.

BTW there was a fair bit of moaning from our support. We are resembling Man Utd fans…….

    Give the team some slack.

Sounded like a good Albion performance
so if Tony Brown is happy then I am to.
The only negative points were Bednar and Cox
were useless once again,if Roberto Di Matteo needs
funds for new players I`d sell Barnett and Bednar.

Roberto has some thinking to do about his team
selection for Forest although Ive already got
    mine.

DLB. Cox was NOT useless. He ran and foraged for the ball non-stop. Bednar didn’t have a good game but the state of the pitch suited the smaller player, it was slippery and hard. Just ask Jonas how long he took to adapt his play. It was good to see Martis play well in difficult conditions against a ‘cocky’ side who refused to lie down and lose at home. They were still throwing everything including the kitchen sink at us even at 0-2 down. We beat a good team on their patch. Never easy, so how about we congratulate the team instead of knocking certain players. Man.U. have just lost to Leeds in Manchester. There ain’t no easy ties in the FA Cup. Just banana skins.

No.7 well said mate exactly what I’ve said to the morons on our page, if we had lost to Leeds there would have been uproar.

If the pitch suited a smaller player then why
did Chris Wood have a blinder when he came on?
I really hope Di Matteo plays Luke Moore as a
loan striker with 5 in midfeild for the Forest
game, over the last 3 games Simon Cox hasnt even
looked like scoring so he needs replacing.

No.6 I agree, they had a great home record and it took us a while to get used to the conditions. Olsson passed the ball from the back really well, Martis was strong at the back. Cox worked hard and although I think we didnt hit the heights, we got the result. Well done Albion – and a home draw…

I’m with DLB and think RDM should consult him before picking a team or buying a player.
