Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves clear way for deals
Friday 1st January 2010, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves today kicked off the new year by completing their first piece of transfer business as they looked to make space for January arrivals.
Forgotten defender Darren Ward has reached a settlement with the club and signed a contract with Millwall until the end of the season, while fellow stopper Jason Shackell has extended his loan at Doncaster for the rest of the campaign.
“Darren has left us as of today to move to the New Den on a permanent deal,” said chief executive Jez Moxey.
Wolves are now working on bringing one or two signings after confirming Sheffield United centre-back Matthew Kilgallon and Villa midfielder Craig Gardner are two of several players on their radar.
But they stress the pair are two on a lengthy list being looked at, and have not bid for either, while they have no interest in Derby winger Kris Commons.
Kilgallon is out of contract at the end of the season and has so far refused to sign a new deal.
Gardner’s £20,000-a-week contract at Villa – as well as a substantial fee – could be a stumbling block, but a loan deal could be a possibility.
But it seems unlikely that Greg Halford, who was on loan at the Blades last season, will be part of an exchange deal for Kilgallon, as has been suggested elsewhere.
Reports that Halford has fallen out with boss Mick McCarthy have also been dismissed.
“The manager has not fallen out with any player here,” insisted Moxey.
Ward, whose Wolves contract was due to expire at the end of the season, saw his loan at the New Den end today.
The 31-year-old, who cost £500,000 in summer 2007, has played nine games in his second spell with the Lions.
Meanwhile, Wolves’ explanation to the Premier League over their team selection at Old Trafford has been acknowledged.
“We received confirmation last week that the Premier League will come back to us and are giving the matter due consideration,” added Moxey.

Good news that we ARE looking to bring in a few players, we certainly need them!
The squad so far, has done a good job but as the pressure gets greater we are going to need some PL experience to see us through because the young squad will suffer if not.
Kilgallon and Gardner would be good signings but if we could really splash the cash I would like to see West Ham’s Scott Parker come in, even at 29yo he would do a good job for us. The only concern is his continual injury problems which leave him unable to complete a full season BUT there is only 1/2 a season to go, so no worries there.
Go to it the 3M’s, get the players in and lets see how we go, hopefully up the PL and into the safety zone.

why is 20k a week and a substantial fee a stumbling block, how can we hope to compete with the teams around us. Robert Huth and Tuncay are on 30 – 40k a week at Stoke and they cost 10M.

I cant get my head round this! although we need to strengthen every part of team in one way or another but i think the problem is pretty obvious! WE HAVE TO MANY DEFENSIVE MINDED PLAYERS! we seem to do ok defensivley until we concede then our heads go a little, and not having any real creativity when milijas is not on field means we cant really get back into a game once behind! henry is gr8 a battler a ball winner that every team needs but what does he do with ball once he wins it? he goes back or sideways to keep possesion which is fine if he hands ball to a creator but when milijas is not on the field then were stuck! the only other create player i can see is surman always looking to go forward with a pass and create something yet MM always plays him out of position, So although the players mentioned in the story are decent enough in my opinion its the wrong type of player! and commons from derby is quality, i remember seeing him away a few times and he has tore us apart also in cup games against big prem sides but ofcourse were not interested! ………… somebody like him in my opinion could be exactly what our side is missing!! and one last point PLEASE LET HALFORD GO BACK TO UTD all he is is a throw in with legs!!

Hopefully it is just papertalk, but comments like Gardner’s wages being a stumbling block and only taking him on loan indicates a total lack of ambition. No one wants us to go crazy on wages, but to survive we need another quality signing ,or two, like Doyle. As Martin Swain commented a few weeks back ,you get what you pay for.
A centre back is a must along with someone that can put the ball in the net. Would like to see a quality right midfielder, just dont think that will happen.
Has Pompey got anyone that can be targeted.? The midfield is run by a loan player. If they have no money to pay wages i am sure there will be players who would jump ship at the first chance. The question is are any better than what we got?

Whilst I applaud the current frugality on wage restraint at Wolves. It seems that if we are to remain in the Greed League and play with the big boys we will have to relax the purse strings just a little!
Gardner, for instance is unable to get into the team at Villa so must see that he will have to moderate his wage claims to obtain a chance for a berth at another club.
Anyone know who we are looking at to boost our forward line. Goals are what we need more than anything else.
What chance is there of the pitch being playable at Tranmere Sunday?
Up The Wolves
And a very happy new year to all fans

Ward and Shackell – both part of the Thick Mick defensive malaise that includes clueless defenders such as Craddock, Stephen Ward, Zubar, Stearman, Elokobi, Berra and Collins. If we had a decent defence then we would not need to play two defenders and a holding player in midfield.
Ince would get this mess sorted out.

It’s not a lack of ambition-it’s being careful, careful that we do not break the bank-do you want us to go the same way has- Newcastle, Leeds, Charlton,Southampton, Portsmouth etc, etc,if we can stay in this league then next season maybe we can push the boat out then! in the 3Ms we trust..Happy New Year to all “true” Wolves fans & and keep the faith.

8. think uv spelt ur name wrong, uv put a B at the front instead on an N!!
from the man city game it was clear we can play, but didnt have that 1 or 2 players that can do somethin different and unlock defences, the way MM plays, these type of players will be a winger who also grafts, for instance Johnson at Boro, but doubt we could get him
Report abuse
I think Craig Gardner & Kilgallon would be good additions to the squad. Equally pressing however is the need for a goalscorer – Redknapp has confirmed that Pavlyuchenko is available – come on Morgan if you are serious about building a solid Premier Leauge team that cheque book needs to come out and it needs to come out now… if not Pavlyuchenko then a striker who knows where the net is that can partner Doyle.
We need a goalscorer that is evident. 1) Jermaine Beckford 2) Kevin Phillips two possibilities. We also need a midfielder who can create chances. Henry/Mancienne etc etc can not create goalscoring chances. Milijas is a luxury player. Off load Ebanks-Blake while we can get something for him. Our aim is to stay where we are 15th would be fantastic. We don’t need to look at next season like we always do when buying a player. We need immediate impact players. A goalscorer who can get us 10-15 goals would keep us in this division. Simples….
The lack of goals is my main concern, we really need to target a striker – James Beattie would fit the bill. It will be difficult to get anyone of proven ability in but we must push the boat out and invest in at least 2 quality players – one attacking midfielder and a proven striker – If we dont then I fear we may not stay up.

Same old Wolves trawling the lower clubs for bargain basement players absolutley no ambition with this small minded management

Bobwolf you really are a joke. Stephen Ward has been one of our best players this season and if you actually went to games home AND AWAY and had seen him against Tottenham you would see what a great job he did against Lennon. He brings balance to the team and one of the best moves Mick has done

Its fair enough that Mick has to work within a tight budget. But then Morgan has no right to expect anything else than survival.

I’m sorry but if we cant afford the wages of Craig Gardner then we are not showing anywhere near the required ambition. I’m sick of hearing about this supposed wage cap when clubs like Stoke are shelling out huge wages for the likes of Beattie, Etherington and Tuncay. Ambition required now Morgan, Moxey otherwise whats the point of being in the Premiership?! We also need more than one or two players. Another left back, creative central midfielder, at least one more winger and another striker to compliment Doyle and ideally another centre back. Please don’t let us down again in the transfer market like our last premiership campaign.

we really need 3 or 4 prem players now just to steady the ship but we all know thats not going to happen wages and fees will kill any deal and i dont think morgan will trust him with much more money do you,so its going to be championship players im afraid but at least mad micks building a squad capable of promotion back to the prem at the first time of asking,,,in mad mick we dont trust,,,Bob Wolf ince has got no chance m8 its common knowledge that the nxt manager will be gerrard houllier morgans already been having talks with him?,,,WE ARE WOLVES,,,ilk

Number 1 priority for me is to sell cry baby Hennessey. Hardly any decent young british keepers about, so somebody will want him.
Number 2 – buy a left back. As at the moment we are playing a heavyweight boxer at left back.
Number 3 – buy a right-winger. As you can’t rely on Kightly to stay fit.

Defence is the key to our survival.Yes, it’s important to have someone who can put the ball in the net, but look at Blues; no real recognised goal scorer but their success last season and again this season is based on a strong defense.
Let’s face it, last season although we could score goals in the Championship, we still leaked too many goals. We need a strong defence to survive

Obviously you were not at Anfield when Ward’s stupid bookings caused by lack of pace and his foolish backheel cost us the game. Muppet!!

all sounds a bit worrying to me, if thats the player we want then lets go and get him, lets start showing a bit of ambition not only to us fans but to the rest of the prem,20,000 grand a week a stumbling block? apart from prob burnley, a very affordable wage for any other prem team, it might make him the clubs top earner but give the other players similar cash incentives to keep us up, surely the money from the lescott deal alone which has gotta be a minimum £2mil would go a long way to covering this. we can stay up easily this year if we go for it, pompey up s##t creek, hull, burnley, west ham no money, bolton in turmoil and wigan throwing goals away like confetti. C’mon the board, surely we’ve got to aim to leave these clubs in our wake.
To anyone who says we lack ambition read the story about Portsmouth today. Ambition should not be confused with spending money we don’t have. Spending money you don’t have to get to the top for five minutes isn’t the way to run a club. You need to build steadily and if necessary be like the Blues go down and up a couple of times.
Pompy have spent millions they never had and now have to find some way of paying it back or they will end up out of business. We came very close to that once if you remember and it’s not somewhere I want to go again. Which is best a moderately succesful club ticking along in bottom half of the premier league or no club at all? I reckon I know what the Pompy fans are wishing for right now.
Davies from Bolton, bit of blood and snot, exactly what we need, no nonsense. Nolan from Newcastle, running our midfield, again similar player. If we want to stay up, even if these two are getting on, they are the fisrt two we need.
Well said No 31 Realist. Yes Portsmouth did spend millions and Stoke are forking out big wages but if things go bad for Stoke will they not end up in the same boat as Pompey.
As you said we don’t want Wolves to go the same way as in the late 80s. In those days we were the laughing stock because there was no money to pay the daily milk and if now or some time later there is no money to pay wages wouldn’t this be something similar.
Remember that now it is three times this season that Portsmouth didn’t pay players and staff wages, and this because they have no money.
So please I agree with Realist that is to build a better squad and pay bigger wages gradually then spending money that you don’t have.
To “31. realist” and anyone else who thinks the club is doing the right thing by having one of the lowest wage caps in the Premiership: no one is asking the club to spend money we haven’t got. I thought we had £25 million in the bank and surely any sensible club these days puts a clause in the players’ contracts reducing their wages if the club is relegated.
And to suggest that it is acceptable to be relegated and come back – well what guarantee is there we would get back quickly? Remember how long it took last time.
As I said, no one is suggesting that the club goes mad but surely paying a bit more on transfer fees and wages is more likely to bring better players to the club and therefore more chance of success. It is true in every walk of life that you get what you pay for.
I think that Mick and the current players have done a pretty good job so far but how much better could it have been if we had signed better players than some of the “squad players” we signed in the summer!

Leave Bob Wolf alone! Everyone is entitled to their opinion – no matter how inane.

Why keep banging on about Stoke being able to afford this or that player, they are in their second season in the prem so have accumulated the funds so that they can now buy those type of players re:9 & 31 above, I don’t think in some cases it’s just about wages – I think it is also about the fee for a player ie: Villa and Gardner, we have to cut our cloth accordingly or risk going back to were we was in the 80/90s.
Keep the faith..in the 3Ms I trust.

My only concern is Kilgallon’s attitude, good player who would be welcome but we have to be sure he wants to play for us. Others we should bag:
1) Beckford
2) Mancienne on a perm. transfer
3) Adam Johnson
4) Ledley
These are all realistic targets who can make us a better team, although maybe overpriced we need additions now at more time than any other.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

Most people on here believe that MM will shop for lower league players. This could be just a smoke screen. MM generally keeps his business close to his chest and we don’t find out until the deal is virtually done. No good gobbing off about how much money we have, as agents will gladly rip us off. I hope Steve Morgan gets the cheque book out. He bought the club for a tenner with a promise of investment. Time to fulfil that promise SM. Up the Wolves regardless where we are next season!!
I’ve read that Kevin Prince Boateng is one of the players Portsmouth are looking to offload. He’d be just what we need. A player just as comfortable as an attacking midfielder as he is as a defensive midfielder, so could play with either Henry or Milijas. He’d give us a great option.

12 million for keen and whatever he wants a week! If we stay up then worth every penny, if we don’t then at worst we would probably lose only 2-3 million on a resale! Surely that would be worth a punt!

I’d have a stab at getting KP Boateng from Pompey too!!!!
I think you’re all missing the point. We can bang on all day about potential targets, but the elephant in the room is McCarthy. He’ll never make a premiership manager as long as I’ve got a hole up my …. well, you know what I mean.
We have just played 360 minutes of premiership football and our most creative midfielder has been involved for less than half of that time. In that time we have conceded 8 and scored just 2 goals.
I’m also amazed that there has been little comment on the disgraceful substitutions at Anfield which to me were on a par with the debacle at Old Trafford. We get a player sent off, then concede a goal – how many times have you seen 10 men rally and get a result out of a game, especially against a team like Liverpool whose confidence was shot to bits, (They had just been comprehensively beaten by Portsmouth). But no, the utterly inept McCarthy makes three substitutions taking off the only players who would give us a chance of getting back into the game, it was the same white flag we raised at Old Trafford. I’m afraid the result against Man City was all to predictable, if you feed the notion into players minds that they can’t beat the top sides, then those players will always have that in the back of their minds, and by so doing McCarthy galvanizes the opposition rather than his own side. It’s a defeatist doctrine.
We have seen many shocks this season where smaller clubs have beaten those from the upper echolons of the Premiership, but while McCarthy pursues this misguided policy of only trying to win a certain number of targeted games, our chances of survival in this division are minimized by rolling over and having our tummies tickled by the so-called bigger clubs.
We could sign 11 lions in the transfer window, but for as long as we are led by a donkey we have no chance.

Why the hell are we still looking at Championship players? Kilgallon is no better than what we already have !! Don;t we ever learn??

How can people say we need a proven goalscorer, and then say go for Pavluychenko? To date at Spurs he has scored one goal, and that against lower opposition in the Carling Cup. To be fair, he has also scored one for Russia in that time.
If Ince can sort out our defence, he is not showing it at MK Dons. Have you seen their results since mid-November? It is not inspiring.

We have a great opportunity now to push on this season but MM needs to improve in this t/f window. Routledge(qpr)would give us pace and crossing ability. Babel at Liverpool isn`t happy and would get a game anywhere else. Beattie/Pavluychenko would give us the threat to established Prem centre halfs we need. While Henry has been putting his shift in we still need the quality midfeild player to win and move the ball.Milijas is quality playmaker even though he can only play 70 mins but we have to give him the players alongside him.We need pace at the back and I`m not sure where we find that. I like the sound of Kilgallon but has he got the pace for the Prem.Thoughts?

Just heard the ‘rumour’ on SSN that Blues are to outbid Wolves to land Craig Gardner from Villa – for 3.5m
As far as the story regarding Pompey – let’s get this into perspective – Pompey were bought out by their current owner who turns out to not have as much money as people think – a bit like when a certain Mr Moxey brought in new buyers (Icelandic business people) to take over at Stoke City – Pompey have had a reasonable amount of success under Arry (even an FA Cup final and european football) they have also sold on the likes of Glenn Johnson for approx £18m to Liverpool – not to mention being in the Prem for a number of years (Sky money etc)
I place the ‘blame’ squarely at the door of the present owners at Pompey – If you cannot afford to be in the Premier league you should’nt pretend that you can afford it!!!
As for Wolves – Imv I feel that Mssr Moxey, Morgan and McCarthy are simply afraid of rocking the players wages (in fear of a backlash from the wannebe squad players currently at the Mol)
This is all conveniently ‘dressed up’ as a ‘tough stance’ on wage capping blah blah blah
Very poor ‘man management’ imv on the part of the 3 M’s – a clear inabillity to control wannebe’s at the club who believe that they are just as worthy as the better (middle of the road) Prem established players to a bigger pay deal
NB* Hence the reason why we have gone for the players we have brought in as I stated even before a ball was kicked
Mr Moxey Has the Job been ‘done’???
I think you are seriously deluded if you believe that!

52 – westcroft wolves, would you rather someone like Peter Ridsdale? He thought he could spend to keep Leeds where they were. How many seasons have they been in the third tier of English football as a result.
Do you have a budget at home that you operate within? I have, and I don’t spend outside of it. As a result I have a roof over my head, a car that gets me about, food in my belly and clothes on my back.
Sensible football rteams also work within a budget, and remain solvent. They don’t end up in administration, throwing points away, and dropping divisions. Leeds, Bournemouth, Luton, Southampton, etc are a lesson in the wisdom of not overspending. Luton are not even a league team any more.
I remember the Bhatti brothers, and would not want Wolves in that position again. Moxey may not be popular with everyone, but he does a good job for us.

It would be common knowledge to Moxey n Co way before we were promoted that we needed additional quality players and with that requirement comes a higher salary for quality! You only get what u pay for! The comment of that 20k a week is a stumbling block is clearly ridiculous to make by the board; as we all know they ARE Business men, NOT football orientated. we can see from Stokes example since Moxey left them! Look where they are now! I am aware that they have a season under their belt but they have moved forward and have ambition. The comments burbling from wolves board does not inspire me at all but we need to push the boat a little bit and not go crazy! We should be off loading some players as it is plain to see from our goal average they ain’t good enough n their wages n fee we got for them would go towards better players. If this list of players they boast about exists then we will see the ambition from the board by who they finally obtain. Will they be competitive with Blues etc for Gardener? We will wait n see.
It is crunch time at Molinuex and they have to get it right if not and we are relegated i would not like to be in MMM’S boots! We need at least 3 new players from a winger to a forward to a proven commander at the back. The likes of Craddock, Elokobi, Seb, Surman, Halford, Jarvis to name a few, should be moved on; a championship defence in the prem?!!!! There are lots of players available if we pay the money. we may not be an established club in the premier league yet but that is what moxey and the rest of us want. And when we are established we will have to start paying that sort of money. so why not begin now and make sure we survuve with comfort. my pick of the players would be:
Anton Ferdinand
Ledley
Danny Murphy
Benjani
Also I think that if Robbie Keane was available it would be absolutely ridiculous not to even attempt to sign him.

55 & 56- I want quality players as much as you do. In order to get them though we need to be in a position to pay for them not only when we buy them, but throughout the time they are at the club. (I would say for the length of their contracts, but we all know that contracts mean nothing to some players.) I can smell the Kenco. It is Pompey flavoured at the moment. It has been in the past Leeds flavoured, Southampton flavoured, Luton flavoured, Bournemouth flavoured. Other clubs such as West Ham, Hull,Wigan, Burley, etc are also starting to hurt financially. Rangers and celtic have had to cut their bills, as have most of the Scottish Teams.
When I say Moxey has done a good job, he has kept us on a sound financial footing where we can go and spend in the window, if not as much as some would like.
I was thrilled when we got promoted, and do not want to see us go down. 17th or above is a realistic goal for this season. I would love to see us challenge for Europe, but only from a sound financial footing. I would rather see us in the bottom half of the Prem than see us go to the wall though.
