Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Hooray from Henry
Thursday 31st December 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
Captain Karl Henry today signed off 2009, insisting Wolves have nothing to fear in their Premier League survival quest.
Wolves go into the new year in 15th spot, two points clear of the drop zone.
Nine of their last 18 games are against teams in the bottom half of the table, including managerless Bolton, who appointed former Wolves academy director Chris Evans as Gary Megson’s caretaker replacement yesterday.
Henry said: “We’re in a good position and we’re convinced we can stay in this league because we believe we’re as good, if not better, than a lot of sides.
“We’ve played every team now and we’ve got nothing to fear. The improvement and how we’ve adapted was shown in the first half performance against Manchester City on Monday compared to when we played them at their place – it was much better.
“We just need to turn some of those draws into wins.”
* Wolves moved up a place to 15th on goal difference after Wigan’s 5-0 defeat at Manchester United last night.
Portsmouth’s 4-1 home drubbing to Arsenal also boosted the survival hopes of Mick McCarthy’s side, who were today again linked with Sheffield United centre-back Matthew Kilgallon, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
We’ve also got a few injuries as well, so who knows?”
Midfielder Henry believes Wolves can take heart from Birmingham, who are on an 11-match unbeaten run.
“They’ve done superbly well,” said Henry.
“We talk about defending well and their success is all based around them keeping a clean sheet.
“They either nick something or they come away with a 0-0 or a 1-1 and that’s maybe something we’ve added to our game.
“We’re becoming hard to beat which is what we want to be, and Birmingham certainly are.
“All the so-called smaller clubs in the Premier League take great heart from that.”
Henry also believes Wolves and Blues are proving the notion that promoted clubs are relegation favourites wrong.
“The promoted clubs are always favourites to go down, but a few of us are making the jump,” he said.

Karl Henry – first name on the team sheet.
No discussion required.
Well, I’m glad Karl is confident – but then, I wouldn’t want him to be anything else.
“we are becoming hard to beat”.what drugs are you on? apart from recent thrashings burnley had two penalties not given and missed a couple of sitters.on another day we could easily have lost the game. have you ever looked at the goals conceded column???
Brilliant…How can we even compare ourselves to Birmingham?Yes they do grind out results look at the draws with Man city,Chelski,Liverpool..now look at us,3 loses and concede 9 against the same 3 teams. The fact is our manager bought rubbish (bar 2) and theres spent wisely and also had premiership experiance. Mick will not take us anyway…GET RID.
Now everyone can see why Liverpool rejected Steve Morgan’s offer to buy them,he’s a joke got deeper pockets than a snooker table, its an ‘Ego trip’ for him thats all, he’s not/never been interested in taking our club forward,As for MM he stated in the E&S that a manager should move on after 3yrs as his team talk and methods become stale after that,so why doesn’t he do what he preaches and take TC with him who’s well past his sell by date, you only have to listen to his after match comments same tripe every time ”We put a Shift in ” whats that all about,we played really well yet lost 2-0, 3-0,etc.i wish SM,MM,TC would All Go,and get an ”owner who wants us to compete with top middle/top clubs, and a top manager, and top coach in too”

Kilgallon would be great, very disappointed we didn’t get Dann and/or Johnson the decision to not be serious with our bids has already proved to be a mistake.

we have nothing to fear in our survival quest, dont make me laugh we have a lot to fear thats why mad mick keeps playing a defensive team if we had nowt to fear we would play attacking football with players in there right positions and not defenders in midfield, and the fact we are becoming hard to beat is that really true won 5 drew 4 lost 11 the worst lost column in the prem apart from pompy and there only 5 points behind us bottom of the league and they beat us so cmon stay off the sherry its pickling your brain and you dont know what your saying,,,WE ARE WOLVES,,,ilk

Karl henry is putting himslef about temendously this season.
But the problem with him passing backwards and sideways continues. Because it invariably ends up back to the keeper by the end of it who hoofs it and we lose possession.
We need an out ball for Karl…an easy pass.
But he played better in possession with Mancienne, Surman and Foley alongside him because they are all pass and move players.
I think our problem lies in our fullbacks. They need to be the out ball and need to provide more in possession. I’d get Foley at right back and Ward at left back ASAP.
How are we becoming hard to beat? 6 defeats in the last 9 and 18 goals conceded would certainly suggest otherwise.Birmingham are doing so well because they have a mixture of young and hungry plus prem experience, also a settled side no swapping and changing, players playing in their natural position etc. With the transfer window opening at midnight Wolves must surely invest in some premiership experience to give us a realistic chance of staying up.

SouthBank Faithfull = CLOWN. Your comments are nearly as bad as your spelling!

GB’s Yead, you are right about him getting about, however if you have a player like HENRY in your team you need someone alongside who is the creative link. Unless we play Milijas we struggle to create anything in the top 3rd.
Totally agree that the fullbacks need to be our creative link as well so YES to WARD and YES to FOLEY.
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL THE TEAM FOR 2010!

Happy New Year Wolves. STAY FOCUSED on the premier, and nothing else.
7 of those 9 games have been against the top 8 though, so maybe 4 wins is not too bad. We won the ‘relegation league’ games. I did think Mancienne showed how that role should be played though, moving the ball quickly and carrying it when space opened up. Maybe him and Milijas is the best centre mid option. Doubt it will happen though.
no6 Tom. I would also like to see us compete with the best, but you know we could do a lot worse than Steve Morgan. The other offer on the table was Kennedy/Souness and you just need to ask Stockport fans what they think about Kennedy.
Happy New Year to Wolves fans everywhere;let us hope this time next year we are still in the Prem and saying what a good bloke this Steve Morgan is.

YEAH.. AND THE SECOND HALF SHOWED WHY WE’RE GOIN’ DOWN. WHAT A PILLOCK!!!!!!!!!
the only reason we ‘improved’ against man city is because we had an extra man in the middle all game as they played with just 3 in midfield. if we are to get rid of MM and morgan doesnt want to spend the cash then surely alan curbishley would be the man, kept charlton mid table in the prem regularly on a shoe string.

Does someone put these stories on to wind us up or what!!!..Henry has been average at best, and what genius worked out that 9 of our last 18 games are against teams in the bottom half…sort of self explanitory that one!
Number 2 – you’ve lost the plot mate. He’s a weak player in midfield, completely one footed, and never gets forwrd and joins the attack. All he is good at is standing just in front of the back 4 and then when he gets the ball it invariably goes sideways or backwards.
I hope we do get a new manager in 2010 if Mick doesn’t get us a decent finish, and at long last, we can say goodbye to the very forgettable Karl Henry too.
Henry is garbage…..sorry but thats my opinion. 1 shot at goal all season so far, what a quality midfielder that is. Mick has to go aswell, plays weak team against man city at HOME and then takes the only man that looks capable of scoring off the field…well done mick. Stubborn attention seeker thats all MICK IS. We pay our Money to watch our team compete, not worry about the fact its Tranmere in the cup next. Laughing stock again.
I have to agree with no 11.gifted Henry aint on the ball, so just partner him with a couple of midfielders who can pass, and dribble. He does a job, and i think he should get credit for what he does do which is to break up the play and protect the defence. Not sure we would have beaten spurs, or burnley without him
Report abuse
Please we need a quality midfielder to play with Milijas if we keep playing Mr Backpass we will go down!!
i am amazed with henrys comments,i think that his “difficult to beat ” translates to us competing for parts of the game and even having the upper hand for some periods, which is an improvement however its the same problem ,not scoring when we are dominating the game and then not creating chances after that.the midfield is so negative,no using the flanks,no shots at goal etc etc,we must play millijas to create our chances we do not have another ball player.any analysis of the midfield players statistics would show our problems,so why cant the management see it!its obvious in this league you need to carve out opportunities ,if we intend to stay up someone needs to realise this and add to the one player we have capable of doing this(millijas)i think ross wallace has the ability ,work rate and confidence,im sure if we are buying on the cheap him and millijas really would create openings for us

25 spot on MM has taken over from Phil brown.
Everything seems to be about Him. Sky should start to take cash away from teams when the manager behaves like MM during interviews.

this man morgan has not spent any money and he does not intend doing so. i wish he wasnt the owner of wolves and we aint going anywere until he has gone

Not saying I think Karl Henry is brilliant but for all those who slate him as just a hard worker who passes sideways and backwards…England one the World cup with a player who’s game was pretty much that….SIR Nobby Stiles

henry is not fit for the prem.he is certainly not captain material.he loses the ball too easily is too negitive always looking to play the ball backwards or side ways.but there again if connor and the so called manager can,t see this with all them badges then good bye

How can we improve if we keep changing the team. just look at the blues how settled are they and not many changes. Come on mick stop swapping the team about. if its not broken dont fix it!and play our strongest on sat wins breads confidence.

I thought when Mr. Morgan bought Wolverhampton Wanderers for ten pounds he had to invest at least 30 million of his own money in to the club. Since he’s bought the club, we have won the championship and pick up a few more million for winning that division.
We are 15th in the league and we are two points from the relegation zone, with all the money from winning the championship and all the money from sky for the televised rights.
When is Mr. Morgan going to invest some serious money in to WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS, there is no better time to invest in the club as I’m sure all of you will know. The transfer window will be opening soon and We need to be looking at bring in premier league players and not championship players, players with real quality and experience, players who have played in this league.
If we get relegated from the premiership… then it will be another five or six years to get promoted again and we will be in the same position, where Mr. Morgan will not invest his money in to WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS.

I agree with ghandifloss, Mr Morgan needs to decide which is his teaam! At least Sir Jack died a thousand deaths for the Wolves. We need an owner whom is for the above all. If he drops Mick then we should drop MORGAN, MR MORGAN WE NEED TO STRENGTHEN THE TEAM. TALK TO YOUR MANAGER AND BUILD A PLAN, DO’NT DO ANYTHING STUPID.

“Nine of their last 18 games are against teams in the bottom half of the table”.
Wow, we’ve played everyone once, Man City aside, and half of our remaining matches are against teams in the bottom half of the table. Who’d have thought that! Talk about stating the obvious.
…and just what is the significance of that anyway. Might just as well of said “Nine of their last 18 games are against teams in the TOP half of the table”. Doh!

We are talking about whether we will survive in the Premier League. Half of the season is gone, and we are on 19points. The usual figure for survival is 40 points, so we are more or less on target, give or take one point.
You armchair supporters sit here and knock Mick McCarthy week after week, and yet we were all set for a relegation battle from the Coca Cola Championship when he came in three years ago. Would we have settled then for being in the Premier League now, and with a fair chance of staying there? OF COURSE WE WOULD!!!!
Anyone with a larger IQ than shoe size would know that every team that comes into the Premier League faces a battle with relegation. We are way beyond where I thought we would be when MM took over, and yet some of you still whinge about a manager who has delivered all he promised, and we hoped, he would do. We have a board that have kept us on a sound financial footing when so many face financial ruin. Remember the days of the Ghatti brothers when we were close to going under? I do. I was a supporter then too.
YOU HAVE TO BE THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF WHINGERS I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO COME ACROSS!!
Get behind the team, get behind the manager, and quit your pathetic knocking. You lot must have the most pitiable lives when all you can see is negativity.
Ask Leeds fans, Southampton fans, Norwich City fans, Coventry City fans, Sheffield United fans, Sheffield Wednesday fans, Leicester City fans, Newcastle United fans, Middlesborough fans, Derby County fans, west Brom fans, etc if they wouldn’t rather be where we are than where they are. They have all been in the top flight, and no longer are. We have been out of it, and now are in it. Thank Mick McCarthy that we are where we are, thank Steve Morgan and Jez Moxey, and thank the players that have got us where we are. You don’t deserve to be called Wolves fans. You don’t support the team and management. You are not supporters, because you just don’t support. You are the reason we spent so long in the doldrums as you ruined the confidence of players, managers and board members. You drove away people that could have got us here years earlier.
I know I will get stick from you negative whingers, but I just don’t care. You mean nothing to me, and you do nothing for the team I love and SUPPORT.

I believe Henry is worth his place for breaking up opposition attacks. He keeps the ball well but doesn’t distribute to promising areas.
The midfield needs to include Milijas and Castillo, in my opinion.
Irrespective of how many games we have to play in a week, MM must always play his strongest team. He bottled out against Man City and should have played Milijas and Jarvis from the start; and to take Doyle off was, IMO, reprehensible.
Why, oh why, does a manager take off the only player likely to score? There was no sign, or later suggestion that Doyle was suffering injury or fatigue.
I like MM as an honest and direct man, but his selections and substitutions, quite frankly, leave me baffled……!
He’ll last the campaign, but I don’t see any further future.

Would have posted earlier but it took me 4 hours to read post 38! Cor, don’t they go on at times?
Don’t want to be classed as a whinger, but whilst Elokobi still gets a game, WWFC won’t survive in the Premier league – he just aint got it.
How can a good footballer like Nicky Shorey go on loan to Forest, without us sniffing around him?
This is just one example of poor decisions being made at all managerial levels within our club!!
I do hope we survive, but fear the odds are stacked!!

i have to agree with brereton wolf.some of you should get a life and support your team.i would have took where we are at the start of the season.what we need now is a positive attitude towards the team and the club. i think the players as a group have learnt alot about life in the PREM and it will help them on the runnin.

Best and most astute thing I’ve seen on this rag. At least he’s got the guts to go the distance with the team and the manager.

I look at what certain SUPPORTERS post on here and I cringe. Do some of you eat your own?.
You want Mark Hughes?, he couldn’t win with 100′s of millions of pounds of investment. Every name I’ve heard thrown up on this page as a potential manager has been sacked, often two or three times!
I know that 90% of supporters out there are loyal and passionate, but there are 10% out there who have a very bad case of glass half empty.
Everyone needs to support the team, we will stay up and we will consolidate next year and as the old adage says, from little things big things grow.

“Wolvessince1966.” I am far from Jez Moxey, but I do see what happens at the Molineux and away games. Do you?
I also follow football outside of Wolves, and see what has happened ever since the Premier League was set up. Promoted teams generally struggle when they come up from the Championship. The Blues are doing well at the moment, but so were Hull last season at this stage. Let’s see what happens.
I notice you don’t answer any of my points that I raise. It takes no brains to follow the other sheep that just knock with no necessity to make alternative points. What exactly do you add to the debate? Oh yeah!! The silly, childish habit of name-calling without making comments on anything football related.
The only alternatives I have seen on these boards to Mick McCarthy are Curbishley, Ince and Hughes.
Curbishley walked away from West Ham when financial necessity meant that two players were sold. He then further kicked West Ham in the teeth by suing them for, supposedly, two million pounds. McCarthy came into a team where we had sold most of our accepted starters. He stuck around for three years taking abuse from the likes of you, still got us into the Premier League, and has us in a position where we could stay there.
Paul Ince failed at Blackburn, and then went down the leagues to MK Dons. Have you seen his recent record there? I write for an American website that looks at all football players from America that play professionally over here. One of them is Jemal Johnson, and so I watch the MK Dons closely. They have won once or twice since the middle of November. That is in League One. Ince can’t get them to win there. Do you really want him here? (I believe, incidentally, that Ince will be a great manager in time, but he is not ready for Wolves yet.)
Hughes had all the millions at his disposal that managers can only dream of. He hasn’t been able to regularly get them to do more than draw in the Premier League. Give McCarthy that type of money and we would be well in the top four. Mick is limited in what he can spend on players, and can offer them in wages.
McCarthy is not perfect. The decision to narrow the pitch and still try and play two wingers is flawed in my opinion. I would not have changed ten outfield players against Man Utd, but I am not paid to keep Wolves in the Prem. Mick is, and he has us geared to do that, even though we will struggle for the rest of this season, as will many other teams in this division. 17th position or higher will be a success this season, and then we can move gradually up from there.
You called me Moxey. I am not, but you must, even through your negativity, see that he has kept this club financially stable. Would you rather we were like Portsmouth, who look like struggling to evade Administration?
Get behind the board, the manager and the players. Try a bit of realism and positivity. You never know, you might feel happier, and enjoy the rare experience.

46 – I would try and respond to your comments but I couldn’t understand half the drivel you wrote.
Beatings are to be expected because teams have hundreds of millions at their disposal – it’s quite simple really.
Blues are doing well (I’m sure you’ve seen them on the internet) but they’ve also had a number of seasons in the premier league recently and the money that generates.
Mick’s made a few mistakes and some of the players aren’t good enough – no-one disputes that.

I hear Mick has been quoted as saying he is not too bothered about bringing in players in the Jan window, he thinks the squad is strong enough survive as is with other players coming back from injury.
My opinion is that we do need players, a better defence for a start, a good play maker besides Miljas, and some one who can score more goals at Premier level, a lot to ask for i know, what sort of budget Mick has, if any, is anyone’s guess, but adding some more quality to the squad is surely the way to go in our fight for Premier survival.

Excellent posts from Tomwolf. If Karl Henry thinks we are doing well his expectations must be rock bottom. The January window is the tester of Morgan and Moxey’s ambitions for the club.
Henry says all we have to do is convert draws into wins. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that involves scoring goals. Would Henry care to enlighten us as to who will accompish this feat? Our current so called “strikers?” couldn’t score a side of pork rind.
I await the miracle in 2010 Mr Henry.
