Norwich today hit back at Walsall’s accusation over Paul Lambert’s role in Monday’s postponed game.

Chief executive Roy Whalley claimed Canaries boss Lambert influenced referee Mark Haywood’s decision to call the game off due to a frozen pitch just 55 minutes before kick-off.

But the Saddlers’ League One rivals have responded and say Haywood’s decision must not be called into question. “We are surprised and disappointed they appear to be questioning his professional integrity over this matter,” chief executive David McNally said.

“We wish to point out the only person responsible for the decision to call off the match is the referee. ”

Lambert has also defended himself and says the referee had the final say.

He said: “If I could get a game called off I’d part the sea as well. But the referee’s the one that makes that decision, nobody else.” Whalley had initially said the official was happy for the game to go ahead but changed his mind after former Scotland international Lambert pressurised him.

“The referee first inspected the pitch at 11.30 and was satisfied that it was playable,” he said.

“It was only after pressure from the Norwich manager that he had another look and eventually called the game off less than an hour before kick-off.”

Walsall have logged a report to the Football League, standard in any postponed game, but have not officially complained about the decision, despite Norwich’s claims to the contrary. The game has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 12 (7.45pm).

The Saddlers have signed defender Clayton McDonald on a 18-month deal following his release from Manchester City.

The 21-year-old has spent three months on loan at Walsall.
