Edwards targets January return

SPURS V WOLVES 16 GD 12Dave Edwards is looking forward to an injury-free 2010, along with the return of Wolves’ three ankle casualties.

The Wales international proved things come in threes after becoming the third player in as many weeks to undergo ankle surgery after Michael Kightly and Andy Keogh.

Kightly is expected to return by the middle of January, while Edwards should be fit by the end of next month and Keogh isn’t expected to back in contention until the end of February.

“It would be nice to be available again and maybe the three of us could come back and refresh things a little bit if needed,” said Edwards. “But I’ve seen how hard it was to get in the team before so I’m under no illusions about getting back in again.”

While Kightly and Edwards sustained ligament damage, Keogh’s problem is more serious after popping a tendon.

“Myself and Kightly have had exactly the same operation, which is strange,” said Edwards.

“The physio said he’s only seen one previous one in all his time in the game, but he’s now seen three in the last couple of months. It’s not ideal they’ve all come at once and it’s just freakish.”

Edwards was injured in the 1-0 win at Tottenham on December 12 when his right foot gave way under him as he chased down Benoit Assou-Ekotto. He added: “It came at a particularly bad time because I’d had a run in the team for maybe 10 or 11 games.

“Looking back, I’m lucky that it wasn’t a lot worse, and if there’s a positive at least it wasn’t my knee which would have caused far more problems. I managed to hobble back to the touchline for the last few minutes. I could hear some cheering from the dressing rooms so I got some crutches to watch the rest of the game.”
