The big freeze will keep the West Midlands in its grip over the New Year, with the region shivering with temperatures as low as -6C (21F).

More than an inch of snow blanketed most of the region last night, putting West Midlands Ambulance staff under increased pressure as the number of accidents rose dramatically on last year. It said there had been a 13 per cent increase in calls compared to last year.

Nationally the AA was called to more than 18,000 breakdowns compared with an average of 8,000 for a normal Tuesday in winter.

Last night’s snow in the West Midlands turned to sleet and rain, creating a quick thaw, but more wintry showers were expected today and tonight.

The showers will stop by tomorrow – but night-time temperatures on New Year’s Eve will drop dramatically, with a severe frost facing people out celebrating at midnight.

Nationally, Wales was the worst hit area today.

Express & Star weatherman John Warner said the overnight snow had been patchy, adding: “More rain and sleet is on the way but the New Year will be dry and sunny although temperatures will below freezing.
