Wolves dropped to 16th place, two points above the relegation zone, following the result, City’s first away win since August.

With Stephen Ward suspended, McCarthy left four others from the Boxing Day defeat at Anfield on the bench and put Michael Mancienne into midfield as Wolves hoped to pull off a shock win against one of the most expensively assembled sides ever created in club football.

Former Coventry striker Craig Bellamy, selected instead of Brazil’s Robinho, fired over for the visitors before he set up Carlos Tevez to score on 33 minutes.

Wolves had chances through Chris Iwelumo, who shot over, and Kevin Doyle, who could not beat Shay Given when put through, before Javier Garrido bent his free-kick around the wall and past the motionless Marcus Hahnemann on 69 minutes.

Four minutes from the end, Tevez finished following a pass by substitute Robinho.

Wolves also lost Christophe Berra to injury, with Richard Stearman take his place in the back line for the second half.

i think the title of this article ‘slumped’ is a little harsh after just watching the match ……. i admit city had a bit of class but i have to say wolves really tried to play football and looked good value for large parts of the game. Even at 1 – 0.

Think we need a bit of quality for the final ball though in Jan

Not going overboard but why did we rest any players tonight,..we havnt got another Prem game for 2 weeks? or is the F.A. cup more important,…but whats really getting my back up is the amount of players playing out of their natural postion,..when Berra got injured surely it would have made more sense to put Mancienne at centre back and put Castillo or Milijas in midfield,..then Jarvis comes on and he puts him on the right wing?.. Doyle off again? sorry but this defeat lies at the feet of M.M.

Hey ho. Again, we can reflect on how we played exceptionally well. We can put a couple of Man City goals down to bad luck, and a very poor linesman.

We can make excuses. We did play very, very well and I am proud of me babbies.

But at the end of the day, we did not score. And we’re never going to win a football match through not scoring.

After our – at times – fantastic performance – I’m more depressed at the outcome tonight than I should be, really.

We did play well. Our fans were fantastic. There is a feeling of injustice…

I have just watched the game live in NZ. I have to say we do lack quality where it counts in the final third. There is a lot of hard work and endeavour but that i am afraid will not keep you in this league. I know S.Ward was suspended today but you can’t tell me that Elokobi is the second choice left back at the club. He was woeful today. In fairness with the revune outlaid by both clubs we would not have been expected to have beaten Man City. That said we created chances and at this level you need to convert a percentage of them. I hope we can nick points off the teams around us and keep ahead of them. Along with many Wolves fans 17th position would suit me just fine.

Having been critical of our possesion and passing game, I thought we were superb tonight, tackling and forward play was excellent the team was much more balanced, best performance for a long time and better with the big striker. We were very unlucky tonight, well done lads and if we play like this then goals and points will come against other teams.

What a superb show in the first half! We pegged city in their own half and had most of the possession. But here we go again our defence let us down!!!! Tevez was in an ocean of space when he got their first goal.He had a ring of wolves players around him gawpin! Bellamy. Petrov & Tevez should have been on their arses everytime they got near the ball and very closley marked.Doyle was superb, Henry & Ilewumo were magnificant so was Zubar, Macienne and Foley. Elokobi played at the top of his game but it aint good enough and it showed. Berra was also superb, shame he had to go off. All credit to Bellamy for stoppin the game. We could have been in front at half time but what a first half it was. i was really proud of em. On 44 mins Elokobi had the ball on the left side tearing down their flank catchin em short but he only had Doyle in the centre…..I was waitin for the wolves back up to come tearin in but it would have been quicker waiting for 512 to Penn!
Second half again the same fightin spirit but Craddock is showin signs of out of depth. Why Mick took Doyle off n put the Championship forward SEB i don’t know. Mick SEB ain’t good enough….its halfway through n he aint scored a goal yet. Again as the second half wore on our defence n midfiled were left wonting as they threded balls through the midfield as if no wolves players were there!Jarvis is definately not a prem player the quality of his crosses is lacking: its either too high or too low n goes to an opposition defender. We did press again but this is where it matters Mr Moxey……They have got QUALITY PLAYERS WHICH MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!! We will see your true colours in a couple of weeks Mr Moxey when the transfer window opens n Mick knocks on your expensive office door like Oliver Twist! After todays performance i think we can be proud of the players for effort. If the fat controller gets off his backside n opens the coffers we may stand a good chance of remaining in the Prem. We need to get rid of the chaff n bring in quality.
Again the ground began to empty with disappointed fans towards the end i hope we can turn it around in the latter half of the season and give us something to be more cheerful about. Come on you Wolves.

Our priority has got to be staying up which I am sure it is, however I can not see us staying up unless we get one or two more players who can create something or a stricker who can score regularly at this level. I watched the Wolves game from my home in Florida, USA.The much talked about Manchester team did not impress me as a team that is worth over two hundread million. Had Wolves equipped themselves with some footballing ideas, Manchester City were clearly beatable. However, Wolves lacked imagination and inspiration, not to mention the will up front. They seemed almost afraid of the opponent. Is this the best that Wolves can do?

From the very start of the season people were talking about serviving in the Premier League. They started with a defeatest mentality.

Birmingham city gives the impression that they see themselves as being equals with others, while Wolves are behaving as inferiors. This was emphasized clearly a couple of weeks ago when the manager apologized for being in the same league with Manchester United.

Come on Wolves, you are equals.

Very poor team selection tonight – and why leave the substitutions so late. Let’s not forget Man City had not won away since August before this evening. Iwelumo is not a Prem striker – you simply have to have more to your game than be big and gangly. Surman looked out of his depth by at least a division and Foley just does create on the right. I cannot beleive Stearman, Milias, Ebanks Blake and Jarvis are so unfit they cannot manage a 2 games in 3 days once a year. And finally the only thing we have gained this evening is that we know our fringe players are nowhere near good enough. We need at least 4 signings in Jan – how about Nugent, Ambrose, Ledley for starters? (we have to be realistic!)

I just can’t believe the team sheet tonight, our best 2 attacking midfielders on the bench and only Jarvis saw some action and when we were chasing the game he takes off the only striker who has proven his ability too score at this level Doyle. Mick McCarthy went out to play for a draw and I’m sorry for the ones who support Mick but this kind of thinking won’t keep us let alone put us in mid-table.

We had set piece opportunities in the first half that need Milijas or Jarvis, City weren’t that good in the first, but still the difference was that they were quicker with that extra bit of quality in the final third, but we can’t be playing weak teams out home where we need points, what will this do too the confidence? The team needs to have an unbeaten run to stabilise our position of 12 that has now changed to 16. The goals were all poorly conceded, but again quality counts, our lack of it showed tonight but it was sitting on the bench and Doyle didn’t have any service throughout the game.

The ref wasn’t great but the team selection was either, like one fan has already said up above we have no premier game next weekend so surely Mick could of played his strongest side. I’m blowing frustration out here, so I might be going overboard, either way the team, the best one, is capable of staying up but we don’t have the squad to play this rotation game. The best two players Milijas and Doyle must play 90 minutes and then Jarvis is the third best attacking player, we need these players in the side from the start against sides like Man City.

Hey, he shelled out an initial £10 on Wolves, thanks to kndly Sir Jack…so now give SMM and Foxey Moxey the dish to make our midfield more dynamc and deep. Another decent effort from the team in terms of work rate, endeavor etc. And, yes, MM can whine about the deflected first goal and the offsides that was not given that led to the second goal. But, lets be clear, we were second best and did not look capable of scoring. Three defenders gave 5-10 yards of space to Tevez to score the third goal – you cannot give that kind of room to a world class player.

This is our last Prem game for two weeks and we “rest” Milijas – is Tranmere really that important in the scheme of things?? There is no creativity and no real service to the forwards- it is so obvious. The TV commentators see it so why cannot our management see it???

The reality is we are in the dumper and we are going to have to hope that we continue to scrape points and that the other bottom nine clubs keep screwing up. It will be more luck thasn judgement if we stay up.

The long term question for the Owner is, if we do stay up, what will be the policy going forward? To keep hanging on by our fingernails or to invest in the right coaching staff and players to secure the Club’s position in the League?

A side with 2 or 3 World Class, and a healthy smattering of established Premiership-calibre players, comfortably beats a very decent Championship side with 1 Prem-standard individual- hardly a surprise. We may spring another Spurs-style shock result between now and season’s end, but if so, I suspect it’ll be in isolation to the Dog Fights which will determine our ultimate fate. Yes, we patently lack real quality, and I struggle to envisage changing that significantly in the transfer window, but at the very least, McCarthy needs to address the need for an attacking, right sided midfielder, and also the sad,but inevitable, conclusion that Doyle looks to be the only centre forward currently at the club, capable of unsettling Premisership defences. After watching this game and the game against Liverpool on TV I would have to say we are a hard working side, all the players do try – BUT they are no better that a hard working side, no touch of class other than maybe Doyle.
They don’t seem to get the idea of pass and move, how often do you see one of our players get the ball and have no where to pass, we end up going backwards towards the keeper and finally get a long ball up field.
The players first touch is just not good enough, and the ability to move into space is just not there, vision in the final third of the pitch is also not there, especially when there is no Milijas.
Look at the sweeping moves Man City put on at times, somehow I just don’t see the wolves players doing that.
Yes I know survival is all that matters this year and then to build onwards and upwards after that, It will be interesting to see who we sign in the up coming transfer window, this will be a true indication of the ambitions of the club.
Young and hungry (cheaper and less experienced) may be the way for the club to move forward, very careful selection of player will be needed, but also expect the casting aside a number of players like we have seen this season, brought in but found not to be up to the required standard.
Can Wolves really attract players on the wages they are willing to pay?
Don’t get me wrong the players I am sure are doing their very best, but the are not up to the requirements to be competitive in this league, lets be totally honest here we won the championship in one of the weakest years in a long time, and how much has the team changed from last year, not much.
The only bright point to come out of all this is that there are teams that are worse than us in the premiership.

Add to that we’re not getting any luck(again!) with deflections and referee decisions going against us.Yes its hard when we keep getting beat by teams we are EASILY as big as but lets all have a reality check, they’ve had YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS of Premier League millions while we’ve had championship crumbs. Its going to take several years for us to build a squad with players like Tevez and Bellamy. For now we have to take defeat on the chin, stick together and beat the teams around us at the bottom. We will be much better if we can get our best team fit and playing at the same time. This season is all about survival,it dosent matter how well Blues are doing-good luck to them because theres still plenty of teams around us we’re well capeable of beating to stay up.

Clueless team selection by Thick Mick cost us the game – two defenders in midfield, Zubar in for Stearman who has been playing well and dropped Ebanks-Blake.

Although we were a bit unfortunate with the scoreline there was no creativity without Milijas and Jarvis on the pitch – why was Surman playing as he was useless (again) and could turn out to be Mick’s new son.

    Questions for Mick;
    - Why was Jarvis rested and only came on when Wolves were 2-0 down and then played on the wrong side?
    - What does Surman bring to the party?
    - Will your son Stephen be punished for costing us the game at Anfield with his stupid fouls and lack of pace?

Once again McCarthy starts his shenanigans.

Yet again playing people out of their best positions. Will this idiot ever learn? Last nights poor defeat was down to his team selection, we are good enough for a grim draw.

We need a top quality manager, not somebody out of their depth.

Does Ferguson rotate the positions in which the team play? No, he rotates the players who play a given position, only a few players are excellent in many roles. Perhaps McCarthy is confused about the term rotation!

The attacking third was the biggest issue last night, as it has been most of the season. To be honest I thought we looked a good team most of the game and probably the best passing performance of the season so far.

We had to start Milijas and the fact he didn’t get on at all and that Doyle was taken off is head scratching. Elokobi as I said yesterday is simply not good enough.

Let’s not be too despondent though, December was a tough month and we probably got more than we thought we would, the good news is that all of January’s fixtures are winnable, and although I’m not fussed about the FAC this year a win at Tranmere will be vital for confidence going to West Ham.

I’m no MM fan but there was nothing wrong with what I saw at either Liverpool or last night, other than the results, and yes I know thats what counts before someone jumps on that, but our performances show we are more than capable of staying up and pushing on and that our squad players can play a part too. However we need 2-3 (4 maybe if SM is deadly serious) signings that improve the TEAM not the squad. Boyd, Ledley, Moses, Pape Diakhaté(Senegalese defender will be a star of the ACON)been watching some French footy this year, it’s rubbish but there are some quality players there and apparetnly Hatem Ben Arfa is available for loan!!!! OK, We NEVER look like scoring, we lack any creativity, we are completely clueless when it comes to the final third. The only players worthy of playing in the PL for me are Berra (who I must admit has surprised me and been fairly solid), Doyle (Who would do well if he could stay on his feet), and Milijas,(If he is selected for big games by MM). I would also like to know why do we take off our only possible chance of a goalscorer in Doyle as soon as we go a goal down??? Can Doyle not play more than 60/70 minutes? I like many others live in hope but I do fear a return to the dark days of the championship. Up the Wolves!

Firstly, the fans were exceptional again. Too many changes again when our next game is the FA cup V Tranmere. Big George and Surman looked out of their depth against the world class players of Man City. I think we should be playing Mancienne, Berra, Craddock, Foley at the back – Jarvis, Castillo, Henry, Milijas, Doyle, Ebanks Blake. We desperately need a winger and Joe Ledley is so dangerous from set pieces I would bid 1.5mil and get him as he is out of contract at the end of the season. We really need an effective target man aswell. Two loan signings in Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck would also do us well. My team V Tranmere:

    Hennessey
    Halford
    Zubar
    Stearman
    Elokobi
    Mendez Laing

Andy Gray said at the start of the second half. “its only 1-0 there is plenty to play for” Either he was being kind or taking the Mick. There was no hope of a comeback because, as we all know, out stikers couldn’t score a goal if the opposition took all the players off the pitch. Moxey has more chance of scoring with Jordan than this lot.

We are all suggesting a quality striker is purchased this January. Unfortunately the purchaser (Mighty Muppet)does not have a good track record in this respect as exemplified by his brilliant acquisition of Stefan Maierhofer: the one who never plays. I’m surprised if the poor lad can remember where the ground is.

The Muppet says we should not be too despondent as the result does no justice to the team performance. HELLO – WE LOST!!

Yes, Mancienne played really well, but you can’t possibly play Mancienne and Henry together . Henry is a defensive midfielder and Mancienne is a defender!!! Our best midfielder by a million miles is MILIJAS. Why on earth wasn’t he playing?

If you want to play Mancienne in midfield then you need to drop your beloved captain Mick, something I’ve advocated for a long time, but please , please, don’t play Mancienne and Henry together again, otherwise we’ll just be lumping long balls up to the front two, time and time again.

I too cannot fault committment of our players and MM obviously can motivate but you don’t win many games by ” putting in a shift ” if those players have no creativity. Felt sorry for Mancienne with his 2 “efforts” as it is clearly not his strength – Milijas may have scored from one of those and why is big Chris on to win headers when there is no support to feed on these when he does win them. Lets all take a deep breath…..

MM has been shown up for lack of manangement guile at this level. You sense Morgan sees this season as a season of possibly blowing up in his face. Whats worse is that Blues are doing really well, baggies are boing back, and villa are just the best team in the midlands. Wolves problem this season like any most recent seasons is that the club always seem to feel inferior and not really knowing exactly what they are doing. OK, Moxey supporters will say he is keeping the club afloat, which lets face it we dont want the mid 80′s again. But 25 yrs on,,, we havent moved on. Wolves will not spend the money in the premiership, if Morgan thinks MM is not the manager to keep up in the middle of the premierhsip then get rid of him, otherwise put up and shut up and give him a £20M war chest to get 4 premiership standard players. We need a centre half, another 2 midfielder 1 centrally and 1 winger and we so desperately need to buy a striker. Beattie no matter his fault he will do a job. But Wolves wont spend the wages so I think we are going to be relegated this season due to a lack of investment or the lack of managerial nous of MM.

Money can be raised by selling the chaff…..SEB, JARVIS, SURMAN, WARD, HALFORD ELOKOBI to name a few! We will see this boards & Mcarthy’s intention come Jan and who they buy if any! Where is the rest of the money they had? Come the end of Jan n if things have not improved its back to the Championship for us with the Baggies going the other way laughin their heads off at us. This Board has not the passion & ability to take us forward. Again we ripped off by Moxey’s fine sentiments & Bull….!
    Come on you WOLVES!!!!!

The losses against the so called top four teams shows interesting reading. Wolves have conceded 13 goals while scoring only 1. Liverpool 0-2, Manchester United 0-3, Chelsea 0-4, Arsenal 1-4. Portsmouth are the only team who have lost more games at home. To survive- stop leaking goals and start scoring.

What happened to 12th at Christmas? Could soon be 17th by New Year…..

Seriously – I fear under MM you are going back down again and thats a shame because (despite what some of my mates say) Wolves should be in the top flight.

BTW did any of you notice on MOTD last night that “Wolves have only had two seasons in the top flight”………. !!! Great innit – the Premiership.

Wolves have conceded 13 goals against the so called top four clubs scoring just one, Liverpool 0-2, Manchester United 0-3, Chelsea 0-4, Arsenal 1-4. Obviously to stay up don’t concede goals and score goals. Only Portsmouth have lost more home games than Wolves. I For one can not fathom, the wholesome changes made by McCarthy.

I am a supporter of the Wolves, not the Championship manager McCarthy, out of his depth in the Premiership.

You are very confused about what a club supporter is!

McCarthy has no future at Wolves and is just sliding us back into the Championship. We need a Chairman with enough bottle to state that McCarthy had a chance, he has blown it and now we get a proven Premiership manager to take us forward.

    THAT is supporting Wolves!

its so easy to say that becos man city squads cost tens of millions more than us this was the difference, but this man city side have drawn 7 games and conceded more goals than any in the top nine.bolton and burnley scored 3 each against them. Yes they have bags of quality but i still think if we had played miljas and jarvis from the start even for an hour we would have stood a better chance of scoring. If we had scored in the first half…… let be honest they looked very dangerous on the counter attack but the fist goal was a fluke, the second I think hanneman did not line up his wall properly for the free kick never mind the offside decision, and the third if you give tevez that amount of room to shoot your asking for trouble.
I think who we sign in Jan could really affect our chances, its not too difficult to see why brum are doing well, they have a mixture of pace upfront, experience in midfield, and a solid defence. i think we need 4 players at least, if we can sign a goalscorer,a winger with real pace, and a midfielder who can run with the ball and pick a pass, another central defender with prem experience.I think MM needs to gamble on in Jan, and go for quality rather than run around players the squads already full of these players

well done ‘super mick’ thrown away 6 points!
what was elekobie doing even on the pitch lastnight?!?! the man would just about make it into a sunday league team! he hasn’t a clue!
And why on earth did Mick have to give SEB an opportunity…you take off the only person in the team with any creativity (DOYLE) and put on a man who expects the ball to come to him, doesn’t work for it and more often than not the ball bounces off of his oversized gut. he will never be good enough for this league and we should have sold him while he was worth something.
I can’t see us attracting great players in this jan window.
I can’t see us going far with MM in control.
let’s just hope that with a new year brings a new start.

Did make me smile I must admit. ‘Wolves have had only two seasons in the top flight’. You’ve just got to laugh at the pure ignorance of that.

For me MM is on the right lines, good team spirit, emphasis on young players who will improve. We’ve got a fighting chance of survival but the investment so far has been poor though from Morgan if he wants mid table. We need to buy quality to build on what we have, 1 striker to compliment Doyle (Beattie or Keane), 1 Wide midfielder(Johnson or O’Neill from Boro would do) + 1 Central defender(Kilgallon).

We may not be able to get these particular players but that’s the level Morgan should be financing not these 2 or 3 million pound squad players. It’s time to put the money you promised in Morgan.

112,munro munro—For me MM is on the right lines, good team spirit, emphasis on young players who will improve.Unfortunatly these young uns arnt fit enough to play 2 in 2 or indeed 2 in 2 weeks this month.New signings how many have featured on a regular basis this season? If MM went out and bought a premierleft back who would be first choice-Stephen Ward, 5 Central defenders on our books yet 35yr old Jody 1st on his team sheet.Quality in midfield with Miljas and Castillo BUT who does MM play Foley (RB)Mancs (CB).Brings on Jarvis when game is out of reach BUT PLAYS HIM ON RIGHT WHEN HE IS A LEFT SIDED PLAYER.This man is nowhere near on the right lines but going backwards at an alarmingly fast rate.Blues are on a crest of a wave thanks to a settled team and a mixture of experience and youngsters. If we are to survive this season and in my humble opinion its a big If them Mr Morgan needs to take drastic action and bring in a manager who will play players where they are supposed to and get a settled team asap.

I am not an MM fan and remain unconvinced he is the man to establish us in the prem, but, the problem with you guys who come out after every defeat and claim he doesn’t know what he’s doing etc.. is that you have nothing to say when things go well. Is it luck that he inherited a club on the precipice of existance and transformed them into CHAMPIONS. The majority of the negative posters have been claiming that we would be dead and buried at Xmas, if we had been offered where we are at halfway make no mistake every one of us with half a brain would have taken it. Yes we could have done better, Yes our home form isn’t good enough, but these things can improve from where we are now and that takes us further up the table. Guys if you want credibility you have to offer more than negative and derogatory comments, how about at the very least constructive criticism??

116,Winslow Wolf,I will always support the WOLVES and give credit where credit is due. However the current situation is nowhere near satisfactory and mainly due the inconsistent team selections, failure to identify the problem areas and distinct lack of goals scored. In 20 games played so far this season we have conceded 2 0r more in 9 of them IE 1 in 2 .These stats will not keep us up.As you are probably aware Bolton have sacked Megson and this is not good news for us.

We are unlikely to stay up because no quality in depth exists.Against Man City the likes of Elokobi,Surman,Zubar and Iwelumo were very poor and would not be good enough in the Championship. Also a midfield including Mancienne and Foley who are both excellent defenders is not the answer.Very poor players bought in the close-season.

Malta I don’t disagree that we aren’t scoring enough and I have screamed for a new proven winger and goalscorer to come in, however I do disagree that 16th at this stage is not satisfactory, I think you are probably frustrated as I am that we could and should have had more points on the board. We need to do business in the transfer window but I think things are looking bright going forward and 9-10 points in Jan and then my Sun-kissed friend we will be halfway to the finish post with plenty of points to play for. And when we are up still come may I might just find you out on my hols to Malta for a celebratory sesh!!!

Winslow,Have just evaluated the January fixture list afraid 9-10 points with the current squad is being very optimistic,West Ham always a difficult place to go to,would expect 3 points off Wigan,Liverpool being realistic a loss, Hull away difficult to call,A defeat at West Ham coupled with Bolton taking points from games in hand would see us back in the bottom 3.As much as i dislike being so negative i must stick to my guns and so long as MM remains in charge and continues to chop and change as much as he does playing favourites above ability then We will be sharing a pint in the sun looking forward to championship football yet again.

Tell you what if we are in bottom 3 end of jan and have not taken 9 points 1st Pint and chaser on me!!! West Ham in turmoil and having been a reg visitor there (my family are eastenders) if we get on top early we can win, Wigan got to be 3 points and Hull are so poor I honestly believe they would struggle in div below and Liverpool at home this season a win isn’t out of the question let alone a draw. As I write this I’m beginning to wonder if I’m deluded!!??? I also believe regardless Pompey are gone, as are Hull Bolton are in self destruct and we are better than Wigan, only 3 can go down and Burnley may be on the verge of a total collapse!!! Phew. No wonder our home record is poor. The main issue with it is the Stadium. The fans are simply too far away, and the away teams are not usually intimidated by the home fans and play in a higher gear. Our away points haul over most of the last 15 seasons will tell you that our home record really isn’t that great.I ALWAYS prefer to watch Wolves away from Molineux.

Do we have a rift between Steve Morgan and Mick McCarthy? Martin Swain has now at least twice referred to this in Eand S articles. I think this must be significant since the E and S do not usually want to rock the boat with the club.Do we have a change on the horizon? Personally I think the manager deserves a full season in the Prem.
