Temperatures may fall to -1C (30F) tonight as between three and six inches of snow falls from tomorrow night.

Maximum daytime temperatures tomorrow will be 1-2C (34-36F).

Morrisons today said sales of 1.5kg bags of table salt rose by almost 400 per cent and sales of 1kg bags rose by almost 340 per cent last week.

Angus Maciver, group marketing and communications director, said: “It is clear that our shoppers are trying to get a grip on the snowy weather.”

Somerfield in Penn, Wolverhampton, has also seen an “increased demand” in sales of table salt, while at Tesco in Codsall, managers are bracing themselves for increased sales.

Manager Lee Phelan said: “We’ve got some in at the moment and the shelves are fully stocked so we are ready if people need it.”

Forecasters also predict rain tomorrow and more snow on Wednesday. Icy conditions could stay around until Thursday.
