McCarthy warns of star-gazing
Saturday 26th December 2009, 10:30AM GMT.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has ordered his players to chase points rather than prizes against Liverpool at Anfield.
Wolves have been beaten in their three games against the other ‘big four’ this season against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Chairman Steve Morgan and striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake are two of the several boyhood Liverpool fans in the Molineux ranks.
But McCarthy insists there will be no star-gazing at Anfield tonight and no inferiority complex after three wins in four.
“Steve’s a Wolves fan – there will be no split loyalties there, none at all,” said McCarthy. “And the lads know what we’re about here and that there are points at stake.
“If somebody gets a shirt or a signed something in between times then fine, but they’re not in it for that. They’re in it for the long haul because we all want to stay here.
“Believing in yourself is one thing but it’s also about proving yourself as well. I wonder how many will step onto the pitch and see themselves as being equal to Steven Gerrard or Fernando Torres?
“I’ve never once gone so far as to think it was cut and dried before we start, and our players are just the same.”
But the Reds go into the game having lost nine of their last 17 games. And McCarthy believes Wolves can exploit an ‘edginess’ about Liverpool.
“They know they’re expected to win and. when you’re not playing great, you’re not full of confidence.
“And a team like us going to Anfield doesn’t do them any favours because there’s that edgy feel to them,” he said.
“We’ve had it here last season against teams we should beat. I hope we get something out of it because that would be terrific.
“But I never subscribe to the theory that good teams will keep struggling because at some stage, they have to get out it and I have no doubt they see Wolves coming as an opportunity.”
McCarthy says the fact Liverpool have not won the league since 1990 is irrelevant given the amount of silverware the Reds have amassed in that time.
“Rafa won five trophies in his first two seasons and they’ve hardly been bereft of silverware, they’ve just not won the Premier League,” he said.

I just hope they get stuck in,particularly in defence, and don’t keep backing off like they did at Chelsea. In addition can the strikers have a few shots on goal when around the penalty area and not try to walk it in, again like at Chelsea?
It all comes down to self- belief and not thinking they are inferior. They did it with Spurs and there is no reason why they cannot get something from this match.
If they actually win I think that will be the end for Benitez.

Keep it up Mick, you talk straight and your feet to the ground, I do like it. We are behined our team and we can do it even though we are not favourites. Up with Wolves.

Mancienne for a midfield start – he came on and looked like a rabid wolf against Spurs. He gives us bite in the centre and more importantly, charges forward when there’s any space infront of him.

its a hard game and a win would be amazing even a point would be good…liverpool are still class and dangerous..my biggest concern is our displa,y i want to see shots on goal and chances being made by us not 3 set pieces and the ball in our half for 90% of the game, if we put a shift in and entertain the boost in confidence will show for the rest of the season, if we win it will be humble pie for many a pundit

With Foley in Midfield we have no chance, clueless Mick with his favourites will take us down!
Mick must go before the transfer window opens along with the happy clappers!

Oh come on Bob Wolf, give it a rest. If you were a true fan you´d bee rooting for whoever pulled on the old gold this afternoon, not moaning about Mick. Get your priorities right. You just like to winge, don´t you.

Come on Bob Wolf. If you´re a real Wolves fan you should support whoever pulls on the old gold and black. Cheer upit´s christmas and stop knocking Mick while you change tactics yourself

Whats the point. if we are going to be cheated when we play these teams then we should just turn up with a reserve team.

Agree with Colin. Mark Lawrenson said there was nothing between the teams. The sending off was the final straw. If they carry on like that they should be OK. I think they played well but Doyle didn’t get much of a look in. Possibly a slight improvement in E Banks.
