Liverpool 2 Wolves 0

Saturday 26th December 2009, 7:00PM GMT.

8159121A controversial sending off in the second-half changed the game as Wolves fell to Liverpool after the interval at Anfield.

It was just eight minutes after the break when Stephen Ward was sent off for a second bookable offence but the full-back had nearly got away with it – referee Andre Marriner went to incorrectly penalise Christophe Berra for the offence instead.

Liverpool players, including goalkeeper Pepe Reina who ran the best part of 80 yards to protest, were only too eager to point out what had happened, and Ward eventually walked.

Nine minutes later and the home side had captialised on their man advantage to make the breakthrough, captain Steven Gerrard up to head Emiliano Insua’s cross into the net.

The game was killed off in the 70th minute, Yossi Benayoun’s speculative shot taking an evil deflection off Wolves captain Karl Henry at close range.

It was tough on Wolves, who had made a real fight of it in the first-half.

Nenad Milijas’ swift free-kick called Reina into action early on, before Kevin Doyle planted a free header wide that should have been a goal from three yards out.

In the away goal, Marcus Hahnemann also had to be at his best to halt Fernando Torres’ stinging drive.

We played really well up to the sending off. I think if Ward had stayed on the pitch we would have got a point at least as Liverpool were very poor in my opinion.

I am a bit disappointed at Ward’s first yellow card. I don’t know why he pulled the player’s shirt in that position. Completely unnecessary. To be fair though the referee was poor again and Steven Gerrard got away with murder. We all know they look after the top clubs though don’t we…

Oh well let’s hope for something on Monday. Will be tough but we have been playing a lot better recently and I think we have a chance. Fingers Crossed!!!

Hey ho. I think all of the Wolves players can be very, very proud of themselves for what was – for seventy minutes – a stunning performance.

Also, congratulations to the travelling fans who gave our boys so much support.

As for the match – Wardy… I don’t think he should have received a yellow card for what led to his dismissal and up until then, he had been fantastic. If Stephen Ward is reading this, hold your head up high, my son.

I think Wolves and their great performance was exemplified by the Wolves man of the match for me – Matt Jarvis. He played his little socks off and never gave up battling.

Kudos also to Hahneman who deserves the goalkeeper jersey long term.

And keep them perked up like this Mick McCarthy. I’m not a sycophant or a boo-boy but someone who likes to see my team fighting for the cause of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club.

We lost, but nobody associated with the club let us down.

2-0 to Liverpool. A score line which totally flatters them considering while it was 11 against 11 we not only held our own but also created some decent chances too.

I watched the game on ESPN and agree with Big Mick, the second yellow was not a bookable offence and Ward should not have been sent off.
However the first yellow against Ward although justified was completely stupid in my opinion. The player was not threatening us in that position and even though he had beaten Ward he still had plenty to do with other Wolves players to get past before he was in a decent position to cause us problems. I have raised this point in a previous posting about needless shirt pulling and holding of players. I know hindsight is a great thing but it remains a fact that if Ward hadn’t pulled the Liverpool players shirt he wouldn’t have already been booked.

I also have to say though that if Wards second yellow was justified then the 2 poor at best tackles from Gerrard should have seen him off the pitch also, that’s not sour grapes it’s a fact. Reina should have been yellow carded as well for coming all that way to get involved. As a Wolves fan even if it was a poor decision against us, I would be very disappointed if one of our keepers did the same thing. Does anyone agree with me?

Throughout all of this controversy however one thing is for sure, we gave Liverpool a game at 11 vs 11 and I am proud of the way the team played today. We’ll never know if we could have pinched a point at least but from what I saw that could well have been the outcome.

Man City at home next and we must play our strongest side and get in their faces from the off. City are good going forward there is no doubt about that but they are also quite shocking at the back at times and we must exploit that to have any chance against them. If we close them down and frustrate them as we did today we have every chance of getting a positive result.

Whatever you thought about the match today we are definitely becoming a hard team to play against and we will get better.

    Bring on Man City.

The ref never considered booking Gerrard for his constant cynical two footed lunges, but Ward’s first insignificant shirt pull gets an instant booking. Then Ward’s clumsy last ditch challenge gets the ref racing over to give a another booking. Surprise surprise Gerrard then scores & even less surprising Elokobi is at fault for both goals as he’s not able to play in Ward’s position.

Even with Liverpool having “a very bad day”, the gap between them and us was like night and day. The commentator said the most realistic thing I’ve heard in ages – we do not belong in the division with the quality of players we currently have.
It was not “tough on Wolves” -it was no more than we deserved following Ward’s school boy error.
Come on E and S. Get real – stop making excuses and get on the band wagon of telling Morgan, that if we are to survive, we MUST buy a number of QUALITY players!!! (Quality that is currently drastically missing!!).

A good perf until the sending off.
However, i question the inclusion of Elokobi; he too often makes positional errors that are costing us goals. Why on earth did he have to go and challenge inside the box when we already had a few players, leaving Benhayoun unmarked? He had NO chance of having the ball there!!!

Matched them man for man and yard for yard for 60 minutes. Great display with 3 great chances carved out by Ninja.

Ward was unlucky but the first booking was a daft challenge asking for trouble. Considering Gerrard’s last 2 tackles had been 10x worse with no consequences, the red card was then very harsh. I bet it would not have been shown if the muppet ref had known Ward was already on a card.

Mick continues to drive us forward with another great performance. My only quibble would be ‘you should have taken off Ninja after the red card and put on Mancienne; in which case Gerrard would not have been first to the ball to head in’

I thought we put up a good performance and deserved a point against a poor Liverpool side.

However, Wards sending off was justified and if Berra,Sterman keep holding and pulling players back then it’s only time before they also get sent off, they have been lucky so far especially against Burnley.

To improve we still need to learn to pass and hold the ball, our possession was poor again, there is no creativity coming forward, Henry, stearman look completely lost when comimng forward and nearly gave the ball away several times. If we continue to play high balls then we need to change Blake for one of the big strikers, or we will continue to have a lack of goals and points.

A fine organised performance from the team today but once again the officials seemed very unnerved by the occassion. The second offence for which Ward was sent off was a reaction to the Liverpool crowd more than anything and even then he at first got it wrong. For anyone at the match there is a very strong case to be made for Gerrard not being on the pitch to score the goal! In the first half the second of two tackles just outside our penalty area was petulant, reckless and studs showing.Mr Mariner treated it with a little arm round the shoulder and be careful please! Five minutes into the second half on the edge of our box he again with studs up scythed down a Wolves player…..nothing not even a yellow for the combination of the two tackles. I don’t believe that the referees are bent or biased at the begining of the game but they always seem in the heat of battle to side with the so called big players and teams fearing the backlash from the likes of Ferguson,Wenger and the very much under pressure Liverpool manager who rushed in to get the Ward situation sorted;and a goalkeeper who is 80 yards away from the incident and then runs the length of the pitch to become involved should be booked in my opinion. In case you feel this is just another case of a Wolves fan of many years standing moaning I also watched Birmingham denied a desrved victory over Chelsea yesterday when a young linesman denied them twice. Tough job yes but the frequency of occasions when the lesser teams are on the receiving end is worrying.

There’s no way we would have lost that match if it had remained 11 v 11 – I’m convinced of that. We were very organised and had a couple of golden chances in the first half which Doyle and Milijas should have done better with so may even have been ahead at the break.
Wardy was a little unlucky to be sent off but he was foolish to even make the ‘challenge’ so soon after being booked.
Fans were great (as usual away from home) and I’ve taken much hope for the rest of this season from the performance. Anyway we are IDS and we have Man City next and most of the chasers have games in hand on us and are playing well. I feel we absoultely have to get something from Man City and we must play the best team that has a chance of beating them. For January the minimum:

    1) Mancienne, signed up
    2) Eagles
    3) Moses
    4) Beckford
    5) Adam Johnson

Its interesting to note that Blues have the best defence in the league with a pair of young, ex-championship defenders so we must not abandon looking outside the top flight for inspiration.

A creditable effort by Wolves until the point when Ward was sent off (a correct call in my opinion. In the first half especially, the game was even and we looked to be cruising to a point. One moment of brilliance unlocked our defence and there was never going to be a way back.

However, the worry constantly is where are our goals going to come from? Doyle needs a more effective partner – Ebanks Blake continues to look short of pace and invention at this level. In the midfield, Milijas has to be more consistent through 90 minutes and we need more pace on the right wing. I thoght Jarvis gave a very good effort for the 90 minutes but got little or no support especially when Iwelmo came on.

Wolves need to buy in the January window but it is difficult to see how we can attract QUALITY players when we continue to flirt with the relegation places at this stage of the season.

Unlucky I would say, intersting on TV where Waddle says Ward was ball watching on several ocassions, and most of the attacking play was coming down that flank. Most of the championship managers believed Ward was a weak link, and now the same in the premiership. His lack of pace and awareness costs us when it really matters. Jarvis was fantastic covering, but we lose him as an attacking force if he has to play so deep to protect Ward. I just wish MM would play or find a proper pacey left back, I`m sure we will stay up but if we do we need to buy better players than the ones we have, and I`m sorry but Ward can`t cut it at this level.

As Wolves fans we know all too often what it is to be let down and to expect the worst but for once I feel like they are putting it in on the pitch whether or not they’re good enough and Mick deserves a lot of credit for that whether they go down or stay up. The sending off was pathetic, typical of what we had to put up with in the PL and currently you are, along with Wigan, Bolton, Blues etc. While typing this I’m watching the Villa game and guess what? Arsenal are getting every decision. The PL is weighted far too heavily in favour of the big four, so that no one else gets a look in at the major prize of the Champions League.

It looked 0 – 0 all the way until Ward got sent off, first booking was correct not so sure about the second how much contact? Not a great deal, it also angers me that Gerrard should of at least got a yellow card in the second, Lucas should have been booked in the first likewise Torres for his foul from behind on Stearman.

After the first 20 minutes we started to believe and worked the ball well, created some chances and the obvious best one came to Doyle that on another day he might of buried it into the net. Really proud of how the lads played, however I still find the substitutions odd, yes we were down to 10 men but surely Doyle is the best at holding the ball up the field right? So why take him off for the needed left back, for me I would of taken Blake off first. Then if he wanted to get back in the game after the opening goal why take off our best attacking midfielder in Milijas? Mick seemed to be happy to take the 0 -1 defeat at that time. Harsh from me you could say, keeping those players fresh for Monday most likely reasons.

The confidence should be fine; the lads can take great credit with their performance and take that into the Man City game. I also think they should have proven too themselves that they can pass the ball, hold the ball and work the ball into the right areas rather than play long balls for most of the time in games.

Come on Monday evening I think Jarvis should be switched to the right as I believe he’ll have beating of the Sylvinho so then have Milijas operating from the left flank then Foley would be more at ease in the centre with Henry. No doubt Elokobi will start in for Ward, big George looked steady when he came on, so hopefully he can produce his cameo performance against City earlier in the season.

Robbed by the ref who never had a control over the game from the first minute. Some of the tackles both sides got away with easrly on, I was scratching my head that he chose not to pull any cards out. I was happy thinking we didnt have a fickle ref and one who was ready to allow players but put in some hard, honest tackles. Then Gerrard lunges in with two, two footed tackles within the space of three seconds- the type of tackles that end careers and the sort of tackle he is all too familiar with. Two feet up is a red. As for Ward, the second was never a yelllow card. The had not hurt us throughout the game- the ref lost his head and we have lost the game at that point- its a shame because I thought we were on for at least a point and fancied us to nick all three the more frustrated the home crowd got. The players can hold their heads up high- this is nothing like coming of the back of the Arsenal and Chelsea games. If we beat City we will have taken 4 wins from 6 which if they could maintain anywhere near that form for the rest of the season, and consider who we have left (it is possible) we will finish tenth. I think the confidence and our perfmormances are there for all to see- at the half way point we are beginning to show we can more than hold our own in this division. I have no doubts we will stay up and it wont take a huge amounht of money after Christmas to add perhaps another player or two to the mix.

We need two new strikers or someone who can put the ball in the back of the net. We played well for the first half then came the sending off then we collapsed due loosing Darren ward.

My advice would be to take 10 million and get as many top players in on loan from teams like man utd or man city or arsenal…. but please Mick don’t keep buying Irish or championship players.

Remember we are in the premiership and that’s where we want to BE at the start of next season.

Just another game where we are deemed little and insignificant. I think this it what upsets me most about the Premier League, the blatant way the refs treat the elite and those struggling in the Premier League.

As stated previously, Gerrard had two two footed challenges in the space of a minute, Torres was climbing all over ( Berra I think) but they get away with it.

Soft marking from Milijas for the header.

Someone on the wolves list- who ran the line with Andre Mariner some time ago states that it is well known that Mariner hates Wolves. If this is correct, then he should not ref a wolves match again.

Great atmosphere from the wolves fans- only heard Liverpool fans once or twice after they had scored.

I have lost all respect for Liverpool after the behaviour of their players in getting Ward sent off (particularly Reina who ran the length of the field – he should be punished for that). If that’s the way they want to win, they can have the three points and we’ll keep our dignity and our heads held high. Wolves forever.

Unfortunately in the big league, the big decisions go against you, its something you have to get used to but you can’t blame the ref whenever you lose. The defending for both goals was dire, Man City next and they will punish you if you play like that!

You’re entitled to your opinion, but, you ain’t got a clue, Karl Henry has been outstanding for us this season & he played well last night, trust me, if we go down he will be picked up & stay in the prem.

I dont think Ward’s 2nd yellow was even a foul, never mind a booking, if so why was Gerrard & Lucas still on the pitch???

    Refs are awful, no consistencey.

I totally agree with you No.7 that any player must not use his hands to stop a player. It’s time that the FA takes the bold decision to legislate once and for all to allow referee to give a straight red card to the culprit and 8 matches suspension to these stupid players. Also a four-week wage cut so that football can be clean again. It’s terrible to see players using their hands to bring down an opponent when they are beaten. It is merely cheating.I am a Wolves fan since 1955 and I am not moaning at all that defeat against Liverpool because when one of our players use his hands he is bound to go as he clearly shows that he cannot compete at this level. These players need a long suspension so that they can learn their lesson. It is disgusting to see players using their hands instead of their feet.Just because of that Wolves deserved to lose that game.It is a pity that Ward will get only one match suspension.Hope the FA and FIFA get together to act against the players using their hands and shirt pulling. It is a bitter pill to swallow when clubs pay these players lots of money to use dirty tricks.Anyway after that defeat against Liverpool I cannot see them doing a good performance against Man City.So we are sure to be in the relegation zone after Monday,no doubt about that.We know we have a young team that needs time to learn in that division.Look at Arsenal who have taken 4 years before they can again challenge for the title. And we need lots of patience if we want Wolves to become a solid team, but not by using dirty tricks.Hope the Wolves fans will agree with me and have a Happy New Year and may our team beat the drop.

Yes we lost, but I am happy because we played a great game. The childlike decision by the referee that got Ward sent of was a farce.

Everybody, including McCarthy, deserves congratulations, that was a real Wolves team and if we continue playing like that and the refs give us a fair crack of the whip, then we are mid-table.

This one slip leaves us looking vulnerable in the table, but onwards to victory against Man City and it will all look different again!

I personally thought we played really well and the lads shouldn’t really shouldn’t be too let down by the overall performance. The defence was solid throughout and in all fairness Liverpool threw everything at us and we dealt with it with ease, before Ward’s sending off. However, Monday is a big game and I really can’t wait for it. I believe if we play well right from the start we can get something from the game. If Bolton can get a draw with them, why can’t we?

Sorry Beacon but I agree with Rich on this one,..I thought Henry was awful last night,..starstruck came to mind more than once, and gave the ball away endless times, and disappeared when needed,
Liverpool would have never scored had we not lost a player,..but I was still surprised by MM’s subs,…why take Doyle off when he looked the more threatening of our strikers, Elokobi…why!! and Foley may be a great right back but he ineffective in midfield.
Desperately need a tough tackling, attack minded midfield player in Jan

I’m sorry but Elekobi is not a footballer.

The clips of Gerrard should be sent to the FA – he basically got away with three dangerous challenges because of who he is.

    And that is just wrong.

Definitely the most positive set of comments in defeat this season, and rightly so.
Poor refereeing cost us at least a potential point.
We have a great chance against City but not if we play Elokobi the guy is a real liability. Put Stearman l/b and put Foley or Zubar r/b.
Also I’m sick of ex-professional so-called experts on the game always being so negative to Wolves,I cannot wait for us to stay up and prove these jokers wrong..

Disappointed with Ward. First yellow completely needless, second yellow harsh but there was some contact before Lucas dived. He has done well since since returning, but we do need a specialist left back. Elokobi is not good enough, bad mistake leaving Benayoun free and following ball when there were already 2 defenders challenging for the ball.
Agree with some of the comments on Henry, gives the ball away too often, although you can’t fault his effort.
Doyle outstanding, but needs more support up front. SEB lacking confidence and short on pace.
Hanneman has made a big difference, he commands his area and his kicking is excellent.
Sat in the Kop during the game the Liverpool fans gave him a great reception.
MM transfer prority a left back, use Ward as cover!

What really annoys me about being in the Premier League is the way these so called ‘TOP’ players drop to the floor like theyve been shot by a sniper everytime they feel a touch anywere near the penalty area!!!-its basicaly cheating,if the Ward ”foul” was in the centre circle their player wouldnt of gone down!!! That said what was Ward thinking of? He got turned for the first foul and was out of position for the second. If we’d of stayed with 10 men Liverpool would never of scored. You carnt argue with Gerrards class-great header but the way their midfield strolled through ours from one end to the other is worrying. We desperatly need someone like Kevin Nolan who can get forward, help the strikers and maybe score a goal.Carnt see why Doyle was taken off-it should of been SEB.Jarvis needs to spend a week learning to cross the ball, his distribution is rubbish and i carnt see why he keeps being played. And im sorry to say Big Chris is NOT a premier league player!!!-he came on fresh as a daisy and all he did was stand with his hands on his hips on the centre circle, not once did he put Rainer under pressure when he was faffing with goal kicks/passbacks,Liverpool had loads of time on the ball when we needed to pressureise them and force a mistake….I Dont have much hope for tonight with Elokobi playing at left back.Lets hope we can sneak a goal and get a result and maybe get some deacent midfielders next week in the window.

    9. Bob, Maybe you could do us all a favour and go to Preston and not bother coming back! Then we would all be saved from your incessant drivvel on here!

on a bright note, i think we matched Liverpool for 70 minutes, they don’t look anything special and actually looked devoid of ideas to break us down until Marriner made a right tool of himself!

Wardy was unlucky, but unforntuately i do blame George for both goals, running and trying to win balls that were never his to try to win.

Going to Molineux tonight for the only he second time this year, hopefully he wont put out the reserves! In the balance of tired legs Vs need to field a decent team to get anything i would go with:

    Hahnemann
    Stears
    Berra
    Zubar
    Surman
    Foley
    Mancienne
    Milijas
