Kiely is backing pair for call-ups

Saturday 26th December 2009, 10:26AM GMT.

Albion keeper Dean Kiely today tipped Scott Carson for an England recall – and revealed he has recommended team-mate Simon Cox for Ireland honours.

Kiely is backing Baggies number one Carson to fight his way back into England’s plans after a solid start to the Championship season.

And the veteran shot-stopper has been asked by Republic of Ireland chiefs for his thoughts on Cox, who is keen to represent his grandmother’s home nation.

Carson has not played for England since his substitute appearance in Germany 13 months ago but Kiely, who is now Albion’s goalkeeping coach, believes the ex-Villa man can battle back in 2010.

“I certainly can see it,” said Kiely. “I don’t think anyone has really burst on and made that shirt their own. A lot of people are mentioned and Scott should certainly be one of them.

“I take the point he is in the Championship but Mr Capello said he was looking for people playing week in, week out. Scotty is doing that and has played to a high standard.”

Meanwhile, Kiely has been contacted by the FAI for his thoughts on the in-form Cox, who has declared his availability for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side.

And the Baggies keeper, who has 11 caps for the Republic, added: “He is a gifted footballer and it would certainly be a nice progression for him.”
