Albion 2 Peterborough 0

Saturday 26th December 2009, 5:20PM GMT.

ALBION 3 SL 26Albion’s patience paid off in a valuable victory over Peterborough at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies were not at their best, but a Luke Moore strike and a Ryan Bennett own goal were enough to secure maximum points.

Both goals came in the second half after the Baggies had laboured before the break.

But the Baggies always held the upper hand in terms of possession and goalkeeper Dean Kiely was a virtual spectator until the closing stages, when the veteran was called upon to make two smart saves.

Albion had the better of the opening 45 minutes, but it was a half of few chances and precious little inspiration.

Jerome Thomas carried the Baggies’ greatest threat and his volley from outside the box early on flew over the bar. But Craig Mackail-Smith could have given the visitors the lead on 10 minutes.

George Boyd found space on the left and crossed to the unmarked Mackail-Smith at the near post, but the striker could not make contact.

But the best chance of the half came 11 minutes before the interval when a 20-yard shot from Thomas ballooned up off a defender towards Gianni Zuiverloon at the far post.

But the Dutchman’s technique let him down and his effort cleared the crossbar.

The second- half continued in a similar manner to the first, but Albion continued to press and they eventually forced their way in front on 61 minutes.

Graham Dorrans was the creator after breaking from his own half and progressed to the edge of the Posh box, before tricking his way past two defenders and picking out Moore.

The striker turned towards goal and hit a right-footed shot that crept in, despite Joe Lewis in the visitors’ goal getting a hand to it.

It was 2-0 six minutes later with Dorrans and Moore again having a hand in the goal.

Moore’s volley from outside the box looped towards goal and Dorrans pressurised Bennett, forcing the defender to head into his own net.

Albion could have extended their lead in the closing stages and Chris Brunt picked out substitute Chris Wood, who burst clear but fired just wide.

No, we were not at our best, but more worrying than that was the tendency to slip into sloppy ways at the back, silly short back passes to each other and the goalkeeper. A Prem striker might have gobbled up three such chances today. There was a notable hesitancy in bringing the ball out of defence. This had been cured I thought but no, it’s with us once more.

Still very concerned that we struggled against Peterborough. We were fortunate that results went our way but lets be fair with the acception of maybe 3 we need a whole new squad to compete if we were to be promoted. Time for Peace to move on if we manage to get up some real investment is needed, he can wipe off the debt aswell as he has made enough out of our club. Where has the money gone for all the players we sold over the past 3-4 years? Premiership money? Parachute payments? It cant all be tied up in this poor squad? I tell you where it has gone in his pocket along with the Directors.

    1. Isn’t it obvious why the ridiculous and dangerous exchanges are accurring amongst the defenders again, Dean Kiely is back in goal!
People have very short memories, he was a nightmare playing defenders into trouble during 2007/08 promotion season. What were all those chipped short clearances about yesterday! He would have gifted a better side 2 goals in the last 20 minutes.

It was a bit unfair for some Albion fans to be
booing at half time, people seem to forget we
havnt played or trained for 2 weeks so were
    lacking our normal match sharpness.

I can’t help feeling E&S should make us all publish our real names. No.3 is so obviously a spy from the wastelands of Alverwumpton. Throstlehead, I can’t see how Kiely can take all the blame for the sloppiness in defence. His LONG ball kicking was OK, it’s the short, fat hairy stuff he looks likely to mess up and those around him contributed to that. His shot-stopping was excellent, but in every other aspect I agree that Carson is first choice. That Roberto needed to kick bottoms at half time said it all. It was sloppy. I do have one small suggestion though. When things are going sideways and back, we could try switching the wingers to their natural sides and back again. It isn’t new, but it does work on occasion. Best of luck for today to the team. The North-East coast might be a touch chilly.

    the first half against peterborough was poor for a team who are in second place,the second half was a vast improvement ,still think that a striker is required and a defender{central}
