Vital route for buses to become showcase
Thursday 24th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
New measures aimed at cutting bus journey times on one of the busiest routes into Wolverhampton city centre were unveiled today.
The scheme would see the A454 at Horseley Fields turned into a bus showcase route which could see improvements such as better lighting and more stops.
Other bus showcase routes in Wolverhampton, operated in partnership with Centro, bus operators and West Midlands Police include part of Stafford Road and along the Bushbury Spur from Northwood Park to the city.
The idea is to improve journeys and upgrade all aspects of bus travel in order to keep the passengers already using public transport as well as attracting new ones.
Bus lanes and technology that allow traffic lights to turn green for buses are among the techniques used to improve journey times .
City council spokesman Gurdip Thandi said: “The proposed bus showcase scheme for the A454 is aimed at enhancing the quality of public journeys in Horseley Fields.
“Plans are still in the development stage, but it is expected that the scheme, if shown to be viable and subsequently approved, will include measures to reduce bus journey times during the peak periods.
“The aim would be to achieve these benefits without adversely affecting car journey times.”
Work is also set to start in the new year to build a pedestrian crossing further east along the A454 to Walsall where it becomes Willenhall Road.
It is being installed after Leon Cunningham, aged 16, was struck by a University of Wolverhampton bus near the Tyburn Road junction while walking to Deansfield High School in 2007.
