Mick: Tough talking was the key
Thursday 24th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today claimed tough-talking meetings at Molineux have been the key to his team’s December resurgence.
McCarthy’s has lifted the lid on the clear-the-air meeting that followed the 1-0 home defeat by Birmingham and prompted three wins from the next four matches.
The Molineux chief is in no doubt about the reasons for the fightback – harsh words, meetings and therapy. Wolves reach the halfway point of the season at Anfield on Boxing Day having climbed to 12th, the club’s highest position in the Premier League.
But McCarthy revealed it took several team meetings, some rollickings and a serious amount of soul-searching to get the players performing at their maximum again.
“The meeting we had after the Birmingham game when I made them watch the match on their own was certainly the starting point,” said the boss.
“I think watching it back themselves rather than me being in there made the penny drop .”
Sports therapist Bill Stevens, who has been with the club for a year, also played a role in the improvement.
“They had a meeting with Bill, the sports therapist here and that was quite lively,” said McCarthy.
“I also had a few harsh words with one or two of them as well over a period of time, but that’s what management is all about – managing a group of people.”
In a month where he was under fire because of his controversial selection at Old Trafford, McCarthy could even be on the verge of being the Premier League’s manager of the month after his side have taken nine points out of the last 12.
But he believes this squad deserve all the credit. “The players have been terrific – they have helped to manage themselves after a tough time,” he said.
McCarthy will draw on his own experiences when he takes Wolves to Liverpool on Bosing Day. He was in Second Division Barnsley’s team that shackled Kenny Dalglish and Co for a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the Milk Cup semi-final in 1981-82.
He believes his players are of similar character. “The players here have that same desire, and their attitude is all top class,” he said.

Management at any level is always going to have the “human error” element
You can ask staff/ players to do a task and how they get on with it is always down to them/ their attitude and of course their abillity – You normally give people 3 opportunities to do what you ask before you take action to ‘sought out’ any problems
I can remember Beckham after a bad England performance coming off the pitch and saying that the manager had asked the players to do X and that they did’nt manage to do what was asked of them very well – Once the players cross that white line – the manager can only hope that they react and do what is asked
Imv MM has yet to ‘prove himself’ in the Prem as a Manager – but 12th in the league at Christmas ain’t a bad place to be – just take a look at the teams below and wonder just how their fans are feeling right now???
Merry Christmas One & All
Up the Wolves!!!

Nice to see that Mick not only gives a rollicking to us the fans but also to his players!
Maybe some of them did let the standards down but we are all in this together, players, management and fans alike and we must stay that way to ensure our position in the Premier League.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE AT WOLVES FC AND WOLVES SUPPORTERS EVERYWHERE!!!

Liverpool Christmas joke straight out the cracker to get you in the mood for Boxing day.
100,000 Scousers are gathered in Stanley Park in front of the world’s TV cameras to prove that Liverpudlians aren’t thick.
Steven Gerrard is the Master of Ceremonies.
“I’m gonna ask Jamie Carragher a question in front of the world’s media to prove that Scousers aren’t thick, okay ?”
“YEAH, SHOW ‘EM STEVIE” chants the crowd.
“Jamie, wots 50 and 50 ?”
“er, 97 ?” answers Jamie.
“No, yer wrong” says Stevie
“GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE” chants the crowd
“Okay, Jamie. Wot’s 20 and 20 ?”
“er, 39 ?” asks Jamie.
“No, yer wrong again” says Stevie.
GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE ” chants the crowd
“Okay Jamie, last chance to prove to the world that Scousers aren’t thick”
“Wot’s 2 and 2 ? ” asks Stevie
“Er, 4 ” answers Jamie
GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE, GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE” chants the crowd
Happy Christmas and an even happier Boxing Day for all us Wolves fans

Ah… Christmas. A chance to over-indulge more than usual.
Merry xmas to all you Wolves massive, keep it supersized!
Gonna be tricky against the scousers. Dunno if they’re hurting and ready to fight for their sad lives, or failing and ripe for the plucking. Liked the look of Mancienne against burnley. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him and Milijas are paired up at some time in the next couple of games. See how it shakes up. Control the middle of the park and you should be able to run the game.
Would like to see a move for a class keeper during the window. We’ve been spoilt with our, fine, home-grown keepers and haven’t had to buy a keeper for serious money, well, ever really. Maybe Ben Foster on a seasons long loan. Looking good keeping Wolves in mid-table would help him get on the plane to South Africa for a couple of weeks next summer.
Time to be turned over. Peace to all men……..and their bitches……..EAT PIES IF YOU LOVE WOLVES!
