Despair to joy in a few weeks

Wolves fans tucking into their Christmas dinners tomorrow might find their turkey tastes just a little sweeter with their team sitting 12th in the Premier League table, writes Steve Bull.
It’s been amazing to see how much ground Wolves has made up by taking nine points from a possible 12. It seems like only yesterday that we were in the depths of despair, having lost that awful match at home to Birmingham.
But the beauty of football is the fact that defeat now feels like ancient history.
Our recent march up the table shows just what a promising Premier League campaign it’s been so far. Whether you look at the top four, the bottom three, or anywhere in between, the Premier League table is fascinating this season.
Who would have thought that Christmas would arrive with Birmingham above Liverpool? And I’m still not convinced Blues are an awful lot better than us. Wolves’ last two home performances have been spot on for me. And we’ve played some really good stuff too.
Anyone who questioned whether Wolves had the right to be in the Premier League this season should have a look at the DVDs of our last two home games.
In the 2-0 win over Burnley I felt that we looked tight in defence, imaginative in midfield and dangerous up front – an impressive combination. January is nearly upon us and I’m sure Mick McCarthy will look at centre forward as one of the positions he’d like to bring in a fresh face during the transfer window.
I’d like to see a new centre-back – just in case either of Craddock, Berra or Stearman suffer a long-term injury – a dominant central midfielder and a goalscoring centre-forward. I wouldn’t mind seeing a new winger either.
For all their occasional grumbles, I think Wolves supporters are overwhelmingly a fair-minded bunch. And I’m sure they’ll give Joleon Lescott a great reception on his return should he start for Manchester City on Monday.
He was fantastic for us and left on good terms. But I still hope – and he won’t mind me saying – that he has a stinker against us if he plays!
