Council’s pledge to tackle problem road

Thursday 24th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

Transport chiefs have vowed to fully investigate possible improvements at a main route into Walsall town centre after a number of accidents there.

Councillors have insisted they are looking to assess options along Caldmore Road following demands for immediate action to be taken. There have been problems with buses mounting pavements and a number of collisions around the Caldmore Green and Corporation Street junction. Just this month a woman had to be cut free from her car after a crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene and part of the road blocked causing congestion during morning traffic after the four-vehicle collision.

Another accident took place in May where a car ended up on its side.

Councillor Mohammed Arif said the council had previously been looking at making Caldmore Road into a one-way system to reduce accidents but there were objections.

He has now called for the installation of traffic lights at the junction with Corporation Street to make it easier for traffic to cross.

Bosses at Walsall Council have insisted they know about problems along the route and are now looking at ways to tackle the situation.

Transport chief councillor Tom Ansell said: “We are very aware that there have been complaints about Caldmore Road. It is a busy road and was not built with 21st century traffic in mind.

“We are looking to stage an investigation into the number of accidents there has been in the area over recent years. From this data we can start to build a picture over what can be done there to make it safer.”
