A shelter could be created at a popular Walsall bowling club to protect players from wind and rain in the cold months. It could house up to 30 players.

An undercover area is being proposed by members of Pelsall Community Association Bowling Club.

A pavilion is already in place at the green at Pelsall Community Association, in Station Road, but there is not enough room for everyone who needs shelter when bad weather strikes. The club has almost 100 members, many of them elderly, and it has asked Walsall Council for permission to erect a shelter.

The proposal has been submitted by West Midlands Design Ltd on behalf of the bowling club.

A planning statement said: “Although the club currently owns its own pavilion there is insufficient cover within the pavilion to protect the players.

“There are 90 players, the overwhelming majority of whom are senior citizens.

“The club wishes to apply for planning permission to erect a shelter, to be located adjacent to the existing pavilion, to provide shelter for approximately 30 players and visitors to the club.

“The bowling club has sought permission for the shelter from the council regarding their rental agreement, but require an application for planning permission before the shelter can be erected.”

The statement added: “The proposals have been carefully assessed in terms of location, scale, appearance, landscape and drainage.”

The new shelter would be between the pavilion and community centre to avoid creating a distraction to residents in Oaklands Way.

It would measure over 7 metres by 2.2 metres on the ground and 2.6 metres in height. This would make the shelter at a lower height to the pavilion and clubhouse.
