Surgery plan for doomed care home

A care home in Wolverhampton being controversially closed by the council next month is being lined up for a GP surgery under plans revealed today.
Underhill House in Bushbury could become a health centre planned for The Scotlands area of the city.
The building, home to 106-year-old Louisa Watts, believed to be Britain’s fifth oldest woman, is due to close on January 15.
The Underhill Lane site is being looked at by LIFT Co, a firm overseeing work on health care developments on behalf of Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust and the council.
Bosses say they have struggled to find somewhere for the development planned for The Scotlands area.
Neil Nisbet, PCT director of finance, said: “One potential site which is gaining popularity with GPs in the area is the site of the Underhill House residential home.” Brian O’Leary, council chief officer transformation, said they would consider all options sensitively and carefully but did not propose to use the site for residential care.
It emerged this week that dinners cooked in-house are being scrapped two weeks before residents move out.
Snacks and breakfasts will still be made on site but eight remaining pensioners’ main meals will be delivered.
