Clement’s battle to save his career

Tuesday 22nd December 2009, 11:28AM GMT.

clement.jpgAlbion coach Michael Appleton has lifted the lid on the agonies of defender Neil Clement’s battle to save his career.

Clement is facing a make-or-break month in his fight against his latest knee injury, with increasing signs that he could be forced to retire at the age of 31.

But a sympathetic Appleton, whose own career was ended at the age of 27 by a major knee injury, believes Clement will find it hard to admit defeat in his fight for fitness despite more than a year out of action.

The coach said: “I’ve been through everything that ‘Clem’ is going through. When you’ve been out for that long somewhere in the back of your mind you have prepared yourself for the worst case scenario. Somewhere in the back of his mind he will have prepared himself for the worst-case scenario.

“Neil will stay positive because he is a positive lad, similar to how I was, and will listen to every single word that’s said to him.

“Because if there is any slight hope a player will cling to that hope, even if it’s 20-80 against you, and I think the surgeon is almost the person who has to make the decision.”

Appleton is urging his former Hawthorns team-mate to follow him into coaching if his playing career is ended in the next few weeks.

He added: “If it was the worst case scenario I would tell Neil to stay in the game if he can.”

It would certainly be the end of an era if Clem calls it a day – it would be fitting if he was part of another Albion promotion team. His fourth with The Albion? I hope to see him in an Albion shirt before the end of the season, whether it’s in the first team or (if he calls it a day) his testimonial, which I’m sure would pack the Hawthorns with the right opposition. Good luck, Clem!

Loverly lad, hope all works out. Clem was a massive influence on all our promotions not least winning the championship under Mowbray when he returned from his loan spell with Hull to dominate defence for the final push. Will never forget the free kick bent into the top corner in the 4-0 against Man City a few years back.

I hope im wrong but i fear the worst its sad that
in this age young players are forced out through
injury but obviously we all hope he can resume hes
been a good servant a few seasons ago when we got
a free kick Clem would deliver that cannonball
shot not too many of his like about.

    The Real Bully Hoo.

I’m not religious but perhaps we should all try a prayer. He’s been a real hero for our club and an excellent example of the sort of professional footballer that we see all too rarely these days.
    Good Luck Neil.
