We did it for the gaffer says skipper
Monday 21st December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves captain Karl Henry insists the players beat Burnley for manager Mick McCarthy.
McCarthy was widely condemned for his decision to rest 10 players for the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United. But the decision appeared to have paid off with a victory, to make it nine points out of the last 12.
Henry said: “He’d done a great job for the club and I’m glad we got a result for him, as well as for everybody. Fair play to him and we repaid him.
“Mick wants the club to stay in this division. He’s a great manager. It’s been a fantastic month for us. We knew we were capable of getting these wins.”
Defender Christophe Berra insisted the dressing room wasn’t affected by the media firestorm caused by McCarthy’s decision.
The Scotland international said: “There was a lot about what happened against United in the papers. But in the dressing room, the players just get on with the job. It didn’t affect us.
“We just go out and do our job as soon as we cross that white line.”
Wolves’ third win in four lifted the club up to 12th, their highest position in the Premier League.
They are three points clear of the drop zone but, with Liverpool away on Boxing Day and Manchester City at home 48 hours later, McCarthy insisted his side still face a relegation battle.
He said: “We’re still in a survival battle, without a doubt. We might get slapped by Liverpool or Manchester City. Liverpool are going to be fighting for their lives and City have got a new gaffer.
“We’ve done a bit of grafting to get into a good position but we’re not getting carried away.”
Berra added: “It was another good win, a clean sheet. It’s good for the confidence of the players.”

Superb. We’re now in the highest league position we’ve been in for 27 years. Can’t argue with that. UTW.

Our position on the ladder looks great, but analysed we are only a few points away from the relegation zone, and after visits to Liverpool and manchester city, we are likely to be back in the relegation zone in a couple of weeks.
Realistic signings in the January window are ESSENTIAL, we need a striker to back up Doyle, and an experienced mid fielder
Don’t be fooled with 12th position, new players next month or else

Just to say that i am laughing at every single person that critisised his decision on tuesday and im also laughing at everyone who was calling for his head after birmingham. I knew we would be ok and i knew we would pick up some wins and turn it around. Shame on all of you and now i will have the last laugh when we stay up and MICK MCCARTHY STAYS AT THE CLUB COME ON ME BABIES!!!!!!

I still say that if we had made an “effort” against Man utd then we could have gained possibly another point. It still waits to be seen if these three points that were well earned yesterday, will be deducted from us by the prem leauge.

They cant deduct points really as they have already set a precedent last season when Man utd fielded a weakened team against Hull I think it was. A number of teams have also fielded weakened sides over the last few seasons in the premier league (ask mr Warnock) and none have faced sanctions.

I agree with cardiff wolf should have had a go on tuesday ok drop a few players but not the whole squad – its all done now anyway so lets just get behind the team – dont think the fa are gonna dock us points though

4) cardiff wolf – if we put first team out against man utd and they were knackered and only gained a point yesterday we would have gained 2 points from 2 games and now we have 3. There’s no way the league will interfere, it would be double standards!
The other point to make is that our ‘first team’ played against arsenal and chelsea and got beat more heavily than our ‘reserves’ did against man u.
It`s ridiculous people are still banging on about if’s, buts and maybe’s – lets just get behind the boys. I`m in belief Liverpool is a winable game now and I`m hoping we play as well as we did against Man City first time around!

Well done MM, 9 points from the last 4 games is a fantastic return. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the transfer window (Bentley or Ledley would be nice).
That’s all I have to say at the moment, so I’ll sit back and wait for all the idiot fans to come on and have a grumble….you know the ones. The so called loyal fans who’ll manage to find a cloud in the silver lining.

In fact there is no ground for any form of punishment.
Here’s to a great result yesterday & more to come I’m sure

Played great i think the change of goalkeeper has made the main difference as commands the box much better. Think Bettie and Liam Lawerence of stoke, and Ledley of Cardiff for January.

Good to get the 3 points, but we can’t get carried away!
We played OK but need to get better against stiffer opposition. Burnley’s weakness to the long ball played into our hands.
We could of conceded goals and penalties in the game, so still a lot to sort out. I thought Mancienne looked good coming on and should be close to a recall.
Still need to strenghten in the transfer window!
I agree with Cardiff Wolf though, that a more balanced team at MU could of got us something. Just a few of the so called first team would have made a big difference.

Before more comments like huntywolves, lets make it clear. Wolves fans by in large have no problem in what MM does. his mistake was not to tell the fans who spent £40 on a ticket what he was going to do. just think if a family went up to manchester it would be over half of an average weekly pay packet to watch the reserves. So hunty you probally never went and splashed the cash.

I`m not surprised that a few are now praising McCarthy because evey team has some supporters who are, shall we say,not too bright. His record should do the talking in top flight football, something like-Played 55,Won 5,and you call that good.Look back at his buys,a couple worth their place and the rest cheap, and not too talented. He still hasn`t learned that you can`t do thing on the cheap in the Premiere.I still think that Sol Campbell could do a good job for the defence, even if only for the rest of the season. Our own Robbie seems ready to be prised from Spurs,Beattie i available from Stoke, and ,how about Luca Toni, rumour hasit he`s available on a free, dream dream dream.Good luck fr Boxing Day Lads, more of the same please.

13. Completely agree we look alot more solid with Hahnemann in goal a great guy too coming over to the fans and shaking hands yesterday. We have the best team spirit in the premier league and our fans sent out a message to others such as benitez and wenger with ‘Super Mick Mc Carthy’ ringing from the stands.
4. We may of scraped a draw at old trafford and then drew or lost yesterday stop being so pessimistic, if you want to be down about something go and support the tescos.
I think Joe Ledley, Sol Campbell (until end of season) Keano on loan and Matt Kilgallon would be lovely.

Well done Mick & the lads.A lot of people seem to have forgotten the cup game when united youth side gave us a lesson.Tuesdays decision took bottle – nothing Mick is short of.The old Seb was in evidence for the second half yesterday – great to see his confidence returning.Haven’t seen any of the usual idiots having a go at Moxey today. Don’t be so pathetic, let him get on with the excellent job he is doing running the business side of the club.If you looked at a financially viable club table we would be right up there. In La-La land we would have Richards,Grey,Waggy & Bailey in the team – get real, support Mick, the team and the club.Next two games are tough and realistically 2 points max. up for grabs but keep negativity for the weather.COME ON ME BABIES !!!

I will remain consistent whether we win lose or draw.Don’t like McCarthy, think he’s been disrespectful to the supporters ever since he’s been at wolves.
I was 1 of the one’s that went to man united away last tues and will never forgive him as manager of our club for admitting defeat before a game has started. Can’t disagree he’s done a good job in getting us to premier league and were now 12th.But lets not get carried away were 3 points above the drop zone and in my opinion we won’t stay up with him in charge.
Im not fickle,i don’t slag him off 1 min and then sing super mick the next like alot of wolves fans yday.I refuse to sing that song!!
No doubt i’ll get abuse coming my way off the happy clappers but im just stating my opinion and will not change my stance just because we’ve won a few games.Under McCarthy we will go down!!

Spanish Ray – That’s some impressive stat work there. I think you’ll find that McCarthy has won 5 games this season alone, and thats good enough for a mid table xmas that we would all have taken back in August. Lets not let facts get in the way though eh ?

16 Spanish Ray: I am one of the un-intelligent idiots that like Super Mick. However, even though I am a complete idiot, I actually do not use stats to form my opinions. Did you know that 80% of stats are made up.
If you do wish to go down the Stat route then I will fire a few at you.
Wolves have played 18 games and Micks team have won 5 lost 9 drawn 4. Hardly 5 in 55 is it??
Admitedly Mick has been an utter disaster for Wolves and I think anybody who drags a team who could hardly put a team out 3 seasons ago to being championship champions and then holding our highest league position for 27 years needs sacking. Makes perfect sense to me. But then again I am an idiot.

Was waiting in anticipation for Norway Wolf to come on following his comments on friday about Burnley bringing their ‘stand up and fight mentality’ to humble us at Molineux…. then we got treated to a gem from Spanish Ray (16)accusing fans who don’t agree with his latest garbage of being “shall we say, not too bright”.
Spanish Ray accusing people of being not too bright ? Yeah….right !

One thing is clear we are never all going to agree about the Old Trafford saga, but, we’d have all taken 9 points out of 12 following the Bluenose embarrassment….right ?
One thing is for certain we are in the highest position we have been since the old First Division days…okay it’s a bit tenuous, but, it’s an undisputable fact.
Bet MM doesn’t make ten changes for Mr Morgan’s return to Liverpool… and the whole football world will be willing us on against Man City after their disgraceful treatment of Mark Hughes.
I thought we allowed a poor Burnley side back into the match over the last 20 minutes so we definately need to strengthen with two, maybe three players in January.
launzwolves (3) – I understand your comments but remember we can just as quickly go back to third bottom – and you won’t be laughing then will you?
The spirit in the team may be there to stay in the Premier League but the experience to ride the inevitable storms which lie ahead is certainly not.
The January transfer window opens soon and Mick and his team have hopefully identified the necessary players to strengthen the squad and then brings them in, otherwise it is going to be a long haul until May.
The United fiasco may well have calmed down after the win against Burnley but it will not be forgotten or forgiven by most of the fans who were at the game and I have a funny feeling it could well happen again before the season’s out – if it does, I hope Mick lets the fans know BEFORE they purchase their match tickets etc and not do what all Yorkshiremen appear to do, say nowt!

MM has worked wonders for our club and he will live and die by the decisions he makes! If by the end of the season we haven’t cut the mustard then that is the time to question his style or ethics not halfway through what has thus far been a very exciting campaign! For me everything he does is for the good of the club and the vindication must taste very very sweet!!!! It is very amusing to see the media circus back pedaling!!!
I think MM should stand for Marmite Manager cos you either love him or hate him but whatever your feelings are for heavens sake let’s get behind him and the club and ensure that we survive this season and move onward and upward next term!!!

A points deductions for what?
Mick’s Man U selection was very negative but impossible to prove that it wasn’t his strongest team. Key players were officially ‘too tired’ & were legitimate injury risks. As much as we’d have liked them to have been match fit in Mick’s assessment they weren’t. Who would be more effective…a 100% Castillo or a 75% Henry? Its certainly not clear cut enough to say that playing Castillo instead of Henry is cheating. Our Spurs/Burnley 11 are our best team when fresh, but unrecovered how much better are they than their other 1st team replacements.
I believe Mick’s injury concerns were honest. There were 5 days to recover after Man U which is plenty of recovery time, so I don’t think it was a matter of trying to keep them fresh, but more just trying to protect them from uneccessary injuries.
The Burnley game vindicted Mick, but in an unexpected way. I think Burnley suffered from playing so hard against Arsenal they then picked up several preventable injuries against us. If it wasn’t for Mick that would have been us.
Also, how can people argue we aren’t good enough when half way through the season we are 12th. Yes we are only 3 points clear, but only 7 points seperate 10 teams, which is half the entire Premier league. We know we were never going to be top half material, but were certainly as good as the rest.
Many are still arguing we could have got a point at Man U which by May would have kept us up. But we could just as easily have got Milijas or Doyle injured & been out for a month, & then how many points would we have dropped.
19.Wulf 1978 err,isn’t ‘Just because we’ve won a few games’ why we’ll stay up!

great weekend, christmas has come early for me with that result, fair play to mick and the boys, gives us a good platform to try and cosolidate a mid table position, provided we make a few decent signings in january, for me, james beattie would be a priority target following his fall out with pulis, his goals took stoke away from relegation trouble last year and could do the same for us, i just hope there are some quality players who are on our radar intime for the jan window. also, if i were on the wolves board, providing we beat tranmere, i think the fans who went to old trafford last tues deserve to get a free ticket for the 4th round of the f.a. cup,

re 30-Simon in Oklahoma-I,m sorry Simon but you seem to be saying that our top players are not able to play more than one game per week due to insufficient recovery time and that they should not be allowed to play against teams where we appear to have no chance of winning in case they get injured.
Should we stop them from training then in order to protect them from injury?
In my opinion the result against Burnley only prevented MM from getting egg on his face rather than justifying his team selection against Man.Utd. particularly following Fulham,s emphatic win yesterday leaving me dreaming ..if only!..

I posted after the Man U result and feelings were running high. I can now take a more level headed view and after Sunday’s result, give Mick the benefit of the doubt, not that he will care, he seems to resent any opinion other than his own, so he doesn’t endear himself to those who disagree with him. I felt that his interview on Sky was a typical Mick rant against the world, he needs to show a bit of humility, people might begin to like him more. Anyway, great Christmas in prospect due in no small measure to Mick and the team. Merry Christmas everyone, even Baggies fans.

The fact is that Burnley got points by fighting for them the previous week, we lay down and gave in before the game had started against MU.
That is undeniable, stop arguing about it!
We can never again proclaim “We will never surrender”, because we did!
As a Wolf for 56 years I find that shaming, because through all we went through we never ran up a white flag before “Shame Tuesday”.
There is no point in continuously raising this shaming period in our history, as arguing it will not make it different. We were surrender monkeys! That is that, please stop raising it!

35, 37, 38 & 39 Edd ! That wasn’t the point I was making. My point was Mick wasn’t cheating. Even if he was flouting the rules it would be impossible to prove & justify a points deduction.
But yes, now that you’ve made your point 4 times…maybe top players shouldn’t be expected to play 2 games a week. Over the last 30 years injuries to key players have been our downfall. Back in the day then the cure was fill them with painkillers but don’t be surprised when their careers are over by the age of 30. Those days are long gone.
As to training…well remember the days of training in the North Bank car park & not surprisingly picking up a ridiculous amount of injuries.
Its now common place to rotate players for the purpose of being strong at the end of the season. Why shouldn’t we do it too if it suits our season’s ambitions. Having strength in depth isn’t just to use them as cover for injured first team players.
I fully expect Burnley to be too lightweight and fade away by the end of the season. But at least they will be able to look back at their relegation season and say…’ahh, those were the days…we went down but we did beat Man United at home’. Sound familiar?
Reading were doing great up until Christmas…until a certain Kevin Doyle lost form & then they faded & went down. Hull were riding high last season early on but just about hung on. We would do the same if we push the same 11 too hard, & ineviatbly be forced to replace them with inexperienced squad players at the business end of the season. Yes I admit McCarthy was ridiculous to change every single outfield player, but he’s right to use his squad as effectively as he thinks best & do whatever it takes to keep us up.

The Man Ure matter is now boring. Aresene Wenger is an aresen anyway!
MM did what he did for the good of our club – in his opinion. I may not agree with some of his selections, but he wouldn’t give a toss about mine and he takes the official rap!
I understand what people say about travelling to Manchester expecting to see what they believe to be the strongest team but, what is our strongest team?
Some people on here would suggest that the team that played at Old Trafford was 75% our strongest team anyway! Where is the problem? We all have our favourite team and players.
I believe that MM is an honest guy doing HIS best for our beloved club. He carries a heavy burden in football terms, with Wolves supporters being some of the most fickle fans.
Maybe, just maybe, he loves our Wolves world as much as we do????
Give him his deserved chance; he got us here didn’t he?

Go back to this message board before the Bolton game and it was all the usual whingers going on about how we’d have to get six points from the next four games or else (ie THEY didn’t expect to beat Man Utd away either). Having more than delivered what they wanted, and having agreed with their judgement of our ability to get anything at Old Trafford, you’d think the knockers would shut up, wouldn’t you?

It cant be denied that what has happened has brought a certain amount of embarrasment and shame to our great club. We dont want to be known as a team that rolled over and allowed its belly to be tickled. Football has changed so much over the years, and is still changing, that this might become the norm for struggling clubs trying to hang onto top flight status, sacrificing pride in the process. The question is, would you rather support a team that will always try to win no matter who they play and no matter which division they play in, or would you be happy to support a team that sometims tries and sometimes throws the towel in just so the club stays in the money. I know which I prefer.

Can’t think of anyone I’d rather have as Wolves manager that M.M. He’s part of a stable set-up and a solid side.
He’s got Wolves into the top division with a great young side he’s assembled, and that team is just getting better and better.
I’ll bet there are many clubs who wish they had such a manager.
Nothing is gained by constantly chopping and changing. Wolves are having a period of stability which is yielding the results it deserves.

19,Good post but you have to realise that certain individuals who post regular( you know who you are)do not allow you to have an opinion unless you are a MM lover.Whilst no one can deny he has done a superb job in getting us to 12Th in the prem i also have serious doubts about his ability in keeping us up in the long term.Too much unnecessary tinkering with the line up will not give us the consistency required to keep us up.Needs to find strongest starting 11 and stay with them (injuries permitting).

Yes its great to be 12th, for now but if we lose the next two games and everything goes against us we could potentially be bottom! Its that damn tight down there. If you look at the teams below us like Bolton, Hammers, Pompey they have far more expensively assembled squads than ours. As I say: 1) Mick pick your strongest possible 11 for the next two games as I feel we can take something from both ‘Pool and Man City and Jez get your cheque book out for the minimum:
1) Mancienne
2) Eagles
3) Ledley

Apologies for the apparent repeating of my opinion (35/37/38/39), this was due to a perceived technical problem rather than an attempt to ram it home and only one posting was intended.
The examples you give of teams stumbling in progress last season are of those lacking strength in depth in key positions rather than a willingness to rotate the squad and I feel that that is the problem at Wolves .
In the wider view, the decision to make wholesale changes by MM for the game against Man. Utd. is added fuel for those who have been campaigning for years to split the alleged elite teams away from the premier league to form a super league .

Rumour alert … probably a wind up … but I was convinced by a credible contact last night that Wolves are attempting to hijack Celtic’s move for Robbie Keane in Jan. Redknapp is unhappy with Keane for organising a players Christmas party behind his back and will listen to offers. Morgan was not happy to splash the cash when he thought we were doomed but recent results have convinced him to pay the wages and sees Keane as someone who can give us the goal scoring power to stay up.

One question I have, why did we pay so much, at Old Trafford, I am told that away teams can tell united to up the price for the away fans, my mate does not pay that much when he went to watch spurs play at old trafford, could it be the wolves board want even more of a cut out of the fans once again.

Seeing as my life as a human being has no meaning I am automatically branded a no brain happy clapper for supporting the best manager for 30 years.
Obviously I am deranged. Reasons to support Mick
1) Won promotion as CHAMPIONS.
2) Picked a team from near extinsion. We were in a position where we couldn’t even pick a first team, never mind a squad. And dragged to championship winners.
3) Holding our highest position for 29 years.
4) Every players supports Mick Mc.
5) The management team allow him to make desicisons. And that is no short part to the trust earned by Mick.
6) He is the best manager sinse McGarry. FACT.
7) His record for Wolves in the Premier is better than we could expect.
8) He is not scared to admit he has made a mistake half way through a game. (Halford taken off for Kites).
9) Takes no rubbish form the press.
10) Adores the FANS. Not the press or the other managers that slated him for his Man UTD decision.
IF you are unable to support a man that offers your beloved club all of this. Then who the hell will you support?????????
Or am I just labled a “Happy Clapper” because it makes you feel better that you do not have to admit that might just have got it wrong about MICK. You can not see the wood for the trees can you. Look how many clubs in our financial posistion would give there rights arm to be in our position. And that is down to good management.
Mick Mc is top drawer and as long as he is doing the business for Wolves I will be a happy man. ANd so should you be.
Stop trying to get the bloke sacked for WHAT EXACTLY??? And even if you can fine 1 reason to sack him, I will find 10 why he should not. Becasue that is how good he has been!!
Even if you do feel he was wrong for what he did at Man Utd. Surely you can let him off that one after all the positives. Or are you too arrogant and pig headed to allow yourself???
RANT OVER. Some people!!!! I am surprised you are motivated to get up in the morning you are that MISERABLE.
These are facts not opinions. And if your opinion is one of hatered toward Mick Management then you are blind to the facts. ANd in so being your opinion is like a belly button. Shallow and holds no water.

Gents, even I after the Bluenoses game slagged off MM and TC. Im sure this was out of Pure fustration of wanting the mighty Wolves to do well in the Premier League. Fact, this result came off the Arsenal and Chelsea thrashings, which made the players look like boys against men? What now then, for the Mighty Wolves! We will get stronger and stronger with this Chairmen, board and management structure behind us. So if we can stay in this division for this aeason I can see only great times for us! So what do I want for Christmas? A united set of Wolves fans fully behind the club,Owner, board, and players for the the reminder of the season to achieve that 1 aim! Survival. COMB.

Hmmm…Spanish Ray, I think you’ve been out in the sun to long. As for the Keano come back lot, I’d love it if he did but who’s gonna pay his wages? I’m sure the 3 M’s wouldn’t change the clubs pay structure just to accomodate him. Always supposing Spurs agreed to let him come here they would also have to subsidise part of his wages, which alas, I can’t see happening.

wol1877ves: Have the last 3 seasons completly passed you by. Have you been living in a bubble?
Mick McCarthy is managing Wolves in the Prem not Sunderland. And judging by our league position and the fact we are 8 positions higher than this time last time we were in the prem. He is not doing a bad job.
Or is it that you have a personal dislike of him. DO not confuse dis like with dis respect.

MM is the best Wolves manager that we have had in decades, brought us up last season as champions with a young and hungry side that didn’t cost the club multi millions in transfer fees, as opposed to previous managers who paid millions on old or injury prone players, who when they left club were worth nothing. We have the best club side that we have had in almost 30 years. Mick knows what he needs to be done to keep our club up. Let’s all get behind him and the club.

Imv, a “Happy Clapper” by definition refers to fans who regardless of result dont say anything that can be deemed as “criticism” against players or management
The other extreme as MM called them “Nuggets” are fans who ask for the manager to be sacked
There have been other Wolves manager’s who have won promotion from the then 2nd Division and although MM has done well; MM has done nothing outside of achieving promotion from the Chumpionship yet
No-one is ever going to gain agreement from all corners of the Molineux; so imv it’s best to ‘air’ your opinions and see what people think
Right or Wrong – people have fought and died to enable us to all have opinions of our own – Happy Clapper or Nugget – I would like to believe that one and all have their right to express their views!
Imv, we all are in agreement with ONE common theme, We are Wolves!!! and as managers, owners and ceo’s come and go – we remain!
Merry Christmas one and all!
Up the Wolves!!!
