Trust the key for Wolves boss

Monday 21st December 2009, 9:30AM GMT.

SOCCER Wolves 11Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes he must have the trust of “everyone concerned” over his decisions – otherwise he would be out of a job.

A report yesterday suggested chairman Steve Morgan is “disturbed” about the negative criticism at his team at Manchester United. But McCarthy’s decision to rest 10 players for last Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford seemed vindicated by yesterday’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Wolves’ third victory in four games – for which he switched nine players – lifted the club up to 12th, their highest position in the Premier League.

The manager has always enjoyed the full support of Morgan but, although chief executive Jez Moxey has shown staunch backing for the manager, there has been no public reaction from the chairman.

A story yesterday believed McCarthy’s decision could backfire on him, even linking out-of-work Steve Coppell and Paul Jewell with his job.

As a former Liverpool fan, Morgan is understood to have been initially irritated by the perception of a weakened line-up facing the Reds’ arch-rivals.

McCarthy didn’t mention anyone in particular after yesterday’s game, but said tellingly: “I have to be able to manage the club and the players, maximise my resources, pick teams and be trusted by everyone concerned.

“The day I don’t do that is the day I’m out of the door. The nice thing was the players believed in me, trusted me and let me get on with it. They were 100 per cent behind me with all the decisions and they played well.”

Players including Karl Henry, Jody Craddock and Kevin Doyle publicly defended his decision.

Seen as a further act of unity, McCarthy led his players in a post-match talk-in on the pitch after yesterday’s game watched by Morgan.

Doyle, who scored the second goal yesterday, revealed: “We got a lot of grief last week which he was just pointing that out and his decision was justified.”
