Hollywood hope as Lenny gets his star

Black Country comedian Lenny Henry has been immortalised on Birmingham’s Walk of Stars – and now has his sights set on the one in Hollywood.
But the Dudley-born celebrity says his family will make sure he stays true to his roots in the region. Lenny joined stars such as Jasper Carrott, Ozzy Osbourne and Noddy Holder on the Broad Street walk of fame on Saturday.
Speaking at the awards ceremony at Jongleurs Comedy Club, 51-year-old Henry said: “I am absolutely blown away that Birmingham has honoured me in this way.
“I bought lots of family with me and they closed off the whole buffet area straight away, there wasn’t even a bun left for me!
“If my mum had been here she would have absolutely love it.
“She would have worn a massive hat and sat right in front of the mayor.
“Then she would have been out there every day cleaning my star. She would have put up a little fence around it with roses to stop people walking on me!”
And for Henry, who is married to fellow comic Dawn French, the West Midlands will always hold a place in his heart.
“My family would skin me alive if I didn’t come back home all the time,” he said.
“When my family came to Birmingham in the 1950s people were so welcoming and I think they gave us a chance when other places wouldn’t have.
“I’ve got huge memories of Chris Tarrant running down the street half naked just down the road for Tiswas and I used to go out in Birmingham all the time when I was younger.”
Henry was in the city headlining Rock With Laughter ’09 at the LG Arena, having recently won critical acclaim for his first serious acting role on stage London as Othello.
He said: “It’s such an honour to receive awards for my acting, especially as I’ve never had any formal training.”
And the comic hopes to pursue more serious acting before claiming his star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
“Maybe I will get a Hollywood star. Never say never!”
