Doomed home’s kitchen closing
Monday 21st December 2009, 5:29PM GMT.
Cooked dinners at a care home being controversially shut in the new year are to be scrapped two weeks before elderly residents move out, it emerged today.
Meals on wheels will be delivered to the eight remaining pensioners of Underhill House in Bushbury as they await its closure on January 15.
The Underhill Lane facility is home to 106-year-old Louisa Watts, believed to be Britain’s fifth oldest woman.
It is set to close on January 15. Wolverhampton City Council said today the kitchens will serve their last hot meals on January 2 with the loss of three staff.
Only snacks and will breakfast will continue to be made at the home, while pensioners’ main meals will be delivered.
Mrs Watts’ son Derek Watts, aged 76, of Wednesfield, said: “The kitchens should not be closed while the home is open.”
Wolverhampton North East MP Ken Purchase said he had asked health secretary Andy Burnham to investigate.
Bosses say shutting the home will save £240,000.

save £240,000 and make elderly people move from their “home” – not acceptable

So now the Tories are going to ‘starve’ the elderly out.

How about clearing out the overpaid Managers in the council – that will certainly save a huge amount of money for their employers. Who needs these people, their ideals are being forced on the council tax payers of the Borough and most are rather stupid ideas. Take a look at the unworkable fountain in Queens Square, due to the fact it can’t be run during winter because if grit gets in the workings it will cost a fortune to repair, then the cost of the company who maintains it, travelling all the way from Kent. Stop this waste and give services the people of the Borough NEED.

This council have no regard for our elderly, none whatsoever. They see them as a soft target and beat them with every opportunity.
Wolverhampton City Council you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.
I’m sure many will remember such despicable behaviour at the polling station.
