Di Matteo’s backing for call off

Monday 21st December 2009, 11:27AM GMT.

Roberto Di MatteoAlbion boss Roberto Di Matteo backed the postponement of Saturday’s match at Blackpool but admitted his frustration.

The Italian was supportive of referee Dave Foster’s decision to call off the game, after extreme sub-zero temperatures in the early hours of Saturday left the Bloomfield Road pitch frozen.

But the boss insisted the Baggies were keen to play the game, which was postponed after Foster made a 10am inspection.

Di Matteo said: “We desperately wanted to play the game, as I think did the Blackpool manager Ian Holloway. But Mother Nature has flexed her muscles over the last couple of days. Blackpool don’t have any covers for their pitch and the referee was quite adamant that the surface wasn’t safe.

“We fully accept that and there’s nothing we can do about it. We won’t see the supporters now until Boxing Day, so I would like to wish them all a Happy Christmas.”

The clubs will speak today to try to re-arrange the match, with the January and February fixture list already crowded.

Tuesday January 12 or Wednesday January 13 might suit Albion, as they currently have a nine-day break between their televised matches against Nottingham Forest on Friday January 8 and Newcastle on Monday January 18.

But a draw in their FA Cup third round match at Huddersfield on January 2 would put paid to the idea, as any replay would be slotted into that gap.

Happy christmas to you Robbie. Make sure you make them turn up for the next game because thats four matches in a row now they haven’t turned up for! Forest and Newcastles games will shape our season. If we can get up we need to be looking at Wolves and Blues for inspiration with signings and how promoted teams can compete and make a real go of it. 3 quality loan signings and we should do just enough to scrape 2nd although Forest have alot of depth.

I think the game being postponed was a digrace.

No undersoil heating, maybe a little much to ask of a club with little finance, but no covers is a joke and surely this should be criteria that every club in the football league should be required to meet??

No Vaughan, Adam, Southern, and a few more 50-50 certainly points the finger at Blackpool not wanting to play.

This could lead to major problems for us, especially as our next away game is Scunthorpe, yet another game that will be postponed if the weather continues…another club, another club with no covers.

If that is the case, we could quite possibly be out of the top two by the time of the cup game at Huddersfield….and at no fault of our own.

Oh well, we just have to keep going and hope we pick up three points against Peterborough to keep the pressure off just a little.

I was up there on friday night and the blackpool fans said they were stretched and hoped the game would be called off. It wasn’t that cold, no covers for the pitch, they should be find by the league it’s not as if they had no warning the weather men were predicting it all week.
