McCarthy laughs off Wenger blast

Saturday 19th December 2009, 11:11AM GMT.

SOCCER Wolves 1Wolves boss Mick McCarthy laughed off criticism over from Arsene Wenger over his decision to rest 10 players to insist he has more integrity in his little finger than most.

McCarthy’s decision to change his outfield 10 for the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United sparked uproar.

Although McCarthy’s side at Old Trafford contained six internationals, Arsenal counterpart Wenger accused the Molineux chief of effectively throwing away the game.

Wenger said: “It’s sad but what can I do? It’s not up to me, it’s up to the Premier League.

“We will compete with Manchester United over 37 games instead of 38. This is a problem for the international credibility of the Premier League.”

But McCarthy hit back, saying: “I don’t give two hoots about everybody else and some of the people who have been judging me and making comments about integrity and honesty – well, wait while I fall off my chair.

“I’ve got more integrity and honesty in that little finger than most of them accusing me. “Whoever it is, I’m not bothered.

“I go through the season not complaining one jot about anybody.

“I try my best not to complain and not to get involved in anyone else’s politics or football club or anything like that and I’m not going to get involved. It’s laughable.

“Wolves are all I’m bothered about.

“I have 21 players and they’re all entitled to play.”

Wolves have to explain themselves to the Premier League board but they are expected to escape any punishment because other clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool have done the same in the past.

McCarthy said: “Everyone knows it’s been done (before) and I’m not bothered about Manchester United or anyone else.

“My job is to maximise the resources of this football club.” Meanwhile, McCarthy has been supported in his decision his opponent this weekend, Burnley boss Owen Coyle, as well as Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson and Albion’s Roberto Di Matteo among others.

“I’ve had lots of messages of support, not because of the decisions I made, but because of some of the ridiculous, scathing outrageous comments that have been made about me and what I did,” said McCarthy.

“It must have been a slow news day for the last two days.

“One of my colleagues, Brendan Rodgers, has been sacked and I didn’t even know about it.”

McCarthy’s self-regard knows no bounds. He now thinks he is the most recognisable man in Britain, and that he has more integrity in his little finger than Arsene Wenger, a man who has earned most people’s respect over the years. This tells us a lot about his absurd vanity, and the way his ego is driving decisions.

Arsene Wenger should be the last to make these sorts of comments he regularly disrespect the FA Cup the Carling Cup and even the European Championship with 2nd choice teams.

I also believe he walks with a white stick since he can never be relied upon the see any on field misdemeanours by his own team. He always has plenty to say about other clubs and their manager’s, which are invariably made from the point of view that Arsenal, are eternal victims.

    Just get on with it.

I agree with Mick on this> All us fans should drop the baiting and get behind the team. It is a sad refelction of the role of finance capitalism in our sport and the fact that clubs are brands and businesses these days.

It is really rich for Wneger and others to whine and winge about this. Let their directors give Wolves eleven of their reserves or 20 million and we will play a strong side every week

I am sorry for the fans who paid good dosh but hey, if you don’t want to watch all our players you ain’t real fans.

I have been a fan since I was six, thats forty years, and my dad for thirty years before that so don’t respond saying I am uncritical etc.

Get on those terraces and support the team, our opponents are not laughing at Mick’s decision but at us lot for our squabbling

    Get out there tomorrow

    we are Wolves

Matters probably won’t have been helped by some of today’s results; obviously, Fulham’s resounding win over United, but also Pompey comfortably beating Liverpool, which will throw an extra degree of scrutiny on Wolves’ approach to the Boxing Day fixture.
It’s all a situation of McCarthy’s own making, I can’t escape the suspicion that he’s been altogether too clever for his own good in his management style this season. I suppose that, if all goes to plan and we beat Burnley tomorrow, McCarthy will have at least been vindicated in a very public statement about his definitive ”strongest team”, which should at least discourage him from the ‘Tinkerman’ approach he’s adopted for much of the season thus far. Fingers crossed it doesn’t all go t**s up.

Granddad started supporting Wolves in 1895, so between us we have 105 years of supporting the old gold and black.

Why don’t we play in old gold any more? It looks like yellow to me, the same yellow that saw us surrendering to Manure last Tuesday!

The modern generation doesn’t have pride and so can’t understand why old b*gg*rs like me keep on and don’t just “get real”.

Without pride and self-worth we are nothing, as this generation will find out sooner or later!

I’ll be there on Sunday supporting the team, but with a heavy heart about what is happening under this manager with no real values worth talking about, other than surviving at any cost in the Premiership!

the mighty reds humbled by FULHAM yet we hide away from them, isnt it just possible with the momentum of two wins we couldnt have got something out of them and now wolves against burnley we will do as we did against birmingham because the pressure will be on and they will collapse as always under pressure,i think by tomorrow afternoon we will have thrown away a minimum of 4 points and by the way mick dont bother with the squad rotation against liverpool even portsmouth can beat them, lets hope the baggies cone up so we dont have to face them !

    Notts Wolves

The E&S uses the caveat – “Although it contained 6 international players”! With that evidence I take it MM will be using the same line up against Burnley tomorrow and for the rest of the season as they are such a formidable outfit?. Don’t insult my intelligence.
Also when Mick talks about integrity, where is the integrity in sending out a team having given up the fight before you’ve even announced your team sheet?
Last week Man Utd lost at home to Aston Villa and today they have been thrashed by Fulham. Alex Ferguson must be thanking his lucky stars for the charitable gesture offered by Wolverhampton Wanderers mid-week.
I am now prepared to put behind me the most sorry episode in the history of our great club and move on. But please don’t give me platitudes about ‘first team players’ and ‘fresh legs’, it just doesn’t wash.
I have spoken to many people who previously have wished us well in our Premiership campaign, now want us to go down.
Let’s move on and at the same time be slightly humble. We at least owe that to the game of football.

Fulham 3 Man U 0. Goes to show that if we only had a go we may have got something from the game. Macarthy’s mis-guided methods have disgraced the good name of Wolves and has instilled an inferiority complex throughout the club.
It makes the Game against Burnley today even more meaningful and high-pressured.
Hope we win of course but I also hope that Moxey and Morgan see the results of other teams that are playing the “big” teams currently. It was not cut in stone that we would have lost no matter what team we put out as claimed by MM.
Liverpool are coming up – as a “big” team albeit in a bad patch, are we going to go for it or be intimidated by their reputation again? Portsmouth werent yesterday as they beat them 2-0.
As for Henry – perhaps he would get more praise from the fans if he actually did some attacking and not just keep passing the ball back to the keeper who then boots it upfield for us to lose the ball. A shot now and again would also help to keep the opposing keeper on their toes. And who know’s we may get lucky and get a goal from it.

I wonder if portsmouth rested their first team players with their 2-0 win over liverpool and I reckon that Fulham must have knowing they cant possibly beat man utd 3-0. Close the door on the way out muppet mick.

I am not a big Mick fan but l agree with his selection for tuesday. The team he put out is not much worse than our supposed ‘first eleven’. Some of them are better or at least on a par with the cuurrent first team. Foley for Stearman, Mancienne for Berra, Castillo for Henry, Surman for Jarvis, Zubar for Craddock (if you forgive his ridiculous handball). We have a big squad who in my opinion are much of a muchness. I would argue that only Doyle and maybe MIlijas have real Premiership quality. It will be interesting to see what MM does in January. I suspect he will try and get 1 or 2 quality players on loan in case we do get relegated.

Lets not forget that with a full strength team we couldn’t beat Manchester Uniteds reserve team in the Carling cup and they played for an hour with only 10 men. McCarthy was right to rest the majority of the players. Had we lost to Burnley then you could quite rightly had a go at him, and as for Arsene Wenger, hes a past master at playing weakened teams in competitions so should shut up.
