Jez: What’s all the fuss about?

Thursday 17th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

Jez-Moxey-475Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey today admitted “everyone was surprised” at Mick McCarthy’s team selection at Manchester United – but says he can’t see what all the fuss is about.

McCarthy caused a media firestorm as well as prompting a Premier League Board enquiry when he made 10 changes for Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Moxey has already said there is no chance of Wolves’ 2,530 fans at the game being refunded their £42 for tickets. And, while the Molineux supremo was surprised at the team, he was fully supportive.

“I think everybody was surprised at the team selection, Mick acknowledges that himself,” said Moxey.

“But the manager has the sole responsibility for picking a team he feels best suits the objective of the club, which is to remain in the Premier League.

“The starting team had six international players. All but one had played in the Premier League and Mick felt it was his best team. He didn’t set out to lose. It’s not as if he played youth players.

“I can’t see what all the fuss is about. Albion made a lot of changes under Bryan Robson for a game at Chelsea on August 24, 2005, Villa rested an entire team for their UEFA Cup tie at CSKA Moscow in February, Liverpool made nine changes at Fulham on May 5, 2007 before their Champions League final and Manchester United did the same at Hull on May 24 this year before their Champions League final.

“No one seems to make a furore when the ‘big four’ do it. For clubs of our size to stay in the Premier League, our players have to play at 110 per cent and players at top clubs don’t always have to do that.”

Moxey said the letter from the Premier League Board asking for an explanation had been received. But the club believe they can avoid punishment. “What people conveniently forget is that by querying the decision, people are questioning the right of a manager as to what his best team is.”

Moxey said McCarthy empathised with the fans, adding: “He understands but what the fans want most of all, I think, is for us to remain in the Premier League.”

Well said Moxey. I completely agree with McCarthy’s team selection on Tuesday. Whats the point in playing our full strength team at Old Trafford and risk an injury to a key player like Doyle or milijas when chances are, a point is the most we could’ve got at Old Trafford. Burnley is the important match as far as we are concerned. Not a fairytale match at OT.

I do, however, think that Mick should’ve warned travelling fans beforehand

For Moxey To state that he cannot understand what the fuss is all about shows his complete lack of understanding of what football is all about,Villa,Liverpool and United RESTED PLAYERS before important European matches points were not really an issue.Wolves were facing a United team with a weakened defence and therefore probably the best time to play them. With four days to rest before facing Burnley a good performance and possibly a point-(dare i say it 3) confidence would have been sky high.Micks excuses about high level performances just do not stack up this is what highly paid fit young and hungry footballers do across the globe week in week out.It is time this once great football club treated supporters with the respect they deserve and not as some child who do not understand football.

as much as it was a shock to see MM change 10 players against man utd i dont think he did anything wrong – he is the manager of a SQUAD and if he wants to rotate to suit players still feeling the effects from a cracking game against tottenham then so be it… either way, the manager cant win, if he fielded a half cut squad and still lost tuesday then took the same team into sunday and lost because of tiredness then he would still have the fans on his back. He did what he thought best to ensure a fully fit team for Sunday for a team we do need to beat – the statement at the beginning of the season wasnt to enjoy the high profile games of the top 4 but to ensure we stay in the top flight and i’m still pretty sure MM will still have some stupid fans calling for his head if we did stay in the top flight!!

i dont disagree that we should be putting 100% into every game regardless but look at the team against man utd – all except 1 have played a game this season so its hardly a reserve side and to be honest, before the first goal we played pretty well, we didnt sit back, we played some good footy out there so its slap in the face for the players out there being called “reserves”

and as for arsene wenger complaining – he complains about everyone when he doesnt win instead of looking at his own team – its ok for him to field his “kids” when he plays a low profile game before a man utd/chelsea/liverpool match, so before he goes off about not respecting the top 4 and playing a full squad, he should respect the lower teams and play his full squad at all times!

His contempt knows no bounds. Does Jez not see the proud vision of Billy Wright CBE as he parks his car outside the stand that bears his name? Or the Honved and Spartak programmes that adorn the club museum? Sir Bill (and so many others) helped create a bastion of English football. He would be spinning in his grave if he saw Wolverhampton Wanderers roll over and surrender before a ball was kicked. Billy’s team wouldn’t give a flying fig about what other clubs get up to, because all they ever cared about was making Wolves a club to be feared and respected across the world.
If Jez doesn’t know what the fuss is about, then maybe he should give Bert Williams a call.

It might not bother Mick and Jez that the whole football fraternity hates us because of the cowardice displayed on Tuesday night but the real fans of Wolverhampton Wanderers take pride in out traditions and the standing we have in our national game. Since the famous floodlit friendlies against Honved and Spartak in the 50′s we have been respected and reveered across europe with fan clubs across the continent. That has been damaged perhaps beyond repair. Glory glory Wolverhampton? I think not. Shame on you MCarthy and shame on you Moxey for not understanding our disgust.

Fair play, absolute storm in a teacup – the paying fans have every right to feel aggrieved but anyone else questioning the manager’s decision should disappear off and concentrate on themselves. All they are doing is creating a siege mentality within the Wolves camp by rounding on us – I think we all need to pull in the same direction and get behind the boys and the manager as vocally as possible this Sunday. Burnley are a very good side and will put up a good fight so we need to get on top of them from the very first minute, just like we did against Bolton. If we win this match then Mick’s decision to rest the team he played against Spurs is justified… however, if we lose then the club should think seriously about offering refunds to the supporters who made their way up the M6 on Tuesday. Lord knows, the PR of the club is bad enough at the minute without this hanging over their heads…

We have gone from a club with a ‘good vibe’ following two wins to having the spotlight firmly fixed on us on Sunday. That ‘must win’ game is now a ‘really must win’ game or Mick (I am afraid) risks being the media whipping boy for the next few months as Phil Brown was last year.

How can we have pride in the name of Wolverhampton Wanderers when we’re happy to concede defeat before a ball is kicked? Have we really fallen that far? Didn’t Morgan say we weren’t just going up to make up the numbers? Looks like it doesn’t it!

Moxey is totally out of touch with real supporters feelings and obviously has no sense of the history or pride of this once great club. I think he and MM should hang there heads in shame. Seeing the reputation of Wolves dragged through the mud like this disgusts me.

I am far from happy with MM so far and certainly not convinced he is capapble of keeping us up let alone establishing us in the Prem, but, he is the manager and it is his job to pick what he thinks is the best side so I really cant see any official come back on this unless the league think they should pick everyones teams every week. When, the top four ‘rest players’ its in entirely different circumstances. They’ve already won the league or don’t need to finish any higher. And in any case, it’s never TEN changes!

I’m a passionate wolves fan and went on Tues night. However, I don’t agree with what Mick did and 99% of the fans who went agree.

I also agree with Arsene Wenger, changing ten outfield players, is completely against the competition of the premier league as we handed Man Utd three points. Arsenal, Chelsea etc will compete with Man Utd over 37 games now not 38.

I think the Premier League should take action as it’s a dangerous precedent to set and I hope this isn’t the future of this league, where the lesser team roll over and rest players against the big four, it will only create a bigger gulf and ruin the integrity of the competition.

Mick can dress it up any way he wants but that was a second team/reserve team, he had four full backs on the pitch and only one of them played in their natural position. It was a joke.

I don’t support the manager in any way over what he did on Tues. These players dream of playing on stages like Old Trafford, I bet the first team are secretly slagging him off behind his back. they are also professional footballers and could have played on Tues, not all have the team have played every single minute so far this season, only a few warranted a rest.

Unfortunately I’ve already bought my ticket for L’pool but if we are to field another reserve team, I would rather save my money at what is already an expensive time of the year.If we don’t beat Burnley, Mick should be sacked along with Moxey!

I went to Spurs on Saturday, didn’t go to Old Trafford. To be honest, had I gone, I would have been gutted – these days out don’t exactly come cheap. I think what Mick did was wrong for football. It’s not really in the spirit of the game – Mr Wenger is quite right in what he says. But there is no doubt in my mind that he did what he thought was best for the club. I don’t think we should be slating him for that – we all want to stay up don’t we??

I do think that the least the club could do would be to compensate these fans in some way – free travel to another game, a voucher for the shop, something anyway. Mr Moxey really has shown his ignorance a bit here.

BUT what this has now become is another chance for all the moaners and doom-mongers to have their usual swipes at Moxey and McCarthy. I’m getting pretty fed up of this now. There are clearly some people who want them out for one reason or another. But the fact is that Mick took on our club in a real mess and got us promoted as champions in the second season. We’ve had a couple of dodgy performances in the Premiership – as has every other team this year. Every time the team under performs, the doom mongers are there – ‘Mad Mick Out’ etc. It does my head in. They were even suggesting that when we were leading the Championship with a just a few games to go!!!!!!

What we really need for the club to be successful now (starting with a win on Sunday) is for everyone to forget about this and get behind the team. The last thing the team needs on Sunday is a negative atmosphere in the ground. The constant ‘Mick out’ WILL NOT HELP US STAY IN THE PREMIERSHIP.

Enough is enough now. Pompey rested 7 players at Chelsea last night and nothing is being said about that! We lost Keogh last week, Kites a couple of weeks before and Edwards last weekend to injuries and not minor ones at that.
Which players did everyone want to see on show Tuesday??? Doyle, Milijas, Ward , Craddock and Henry. If so, let’s look closely at these.
Doyle – our star player needs to be right for the next 3 games, as without him we would really struggle up front.
    Milijas – never plays a 90 minutes.
Ward – must be careful as he has just come back from a long term injury and is crucial to us at present.
Craddock – our oldest outfield player and is needed at the back for his experience.
Henry – runs more for the team than any other.
I just hope we do not fail against Burnley as there will be an unhealthy atmosphere around Molineux.
Interestingly Ferguson, Taylor, Moyles, Coyle and Bully have defended MM’s decision.
My personal opinion is that we should have done similar to Pompey and rested half a dozen or so but definitely were right not to have the same team that played at Spurs plus Doyle!

In this instance, I can see the right of those who paid to go to Old Trafford to have a moan.

I can understand why some of the supposed “first team” might have wanted to have played the Man Utd game – let’s face it, playing at Old Trafford when you’re at the level of many of our squad is the stuff of romance and dreams.

I can understand why Arsene Wenger might have a moan – but he quite often finds something to grumble about, too.

…and I can also understand the thinking of Mick McCarthy and, if we win against Burnley, he’ll be totally vindicated.

As for the club should have told travelling fans, I seem to recall reading on here that Mick said well beforehand that, post-Spurs, he would have to ring the changes for the Man Uts game. If it wasn’t here, it was certainly on a Sky interview. Wherever it was, I assure you he did give a clue as to his thinking…

We have to be savvy and use every advantage we can get out of the system to give us a chance of winning games in this division. The spirit of the game went a long time ago – Man Utd operate with a £900 million debt! The team performed well at OT and was a darn sight better than the performances at Chelsea and at home to Birmingham. Wolves fans who don’t have the nous or basic understanding of what Mick did are deluded. It may well be a sorry state of affairs, but that is the inequal system we have contrived – and every time we pay our direct debit to SKY TV we are perpetuating it!

Did anyone reasonably expect that the result at Spurs would be repeated at OT? Coudln’t they see the state of the players at the end of the Spurs game?

I have said it before and i will say it again – WWFC need an educated press spokesperson. That person could have made known to the press on Saturday evening that MM would be looking to rotate the “squad” for the coming Man Utd fixture due to a few niggling injuries and tiredness.
As for Wenger – He is French – He is Arsenal – He is a whinger – It’s a wonder he “saw” the team selection he usually says “I did not see it” when it suits him. I think MM should have probably started with 4 or 5 of the previous line up and made strategic subs as and when.
All you poppers – what do you expect Moxey to say? He will not slag off the man HE appointed in public!!! Either way MM could not win – If he played a “full team” at Old Trafford and we lose and get injuries/tired players then lose to Burnley – you will all say ” He should have played a weaker team against Utd”.
Doing what he did, now gives us the edge over Burnley – lets hope MM was right. One thing I do disagree with though – players that are young and hungry are “knackered”??? Ask Aston Villa who played and BEAT Man Utd on Saturday EVENING and played a similar 11 against Sunderland on Tuesday and won!!!

The paper don’t usually print my comments on wolves stories, but i hope they will print this as it addresses Moxey’s comments on the Albion.

Yes Robson did change the team against chelsea – and the fans gave him stick for it… but there are huge differences.

Firstly we had not just enjoyed a confidence building away win against a team in the top 4.

Secondly His change was more to do with formation as he played one (Kevin “Nipper” Campbell) up front. He did not play a team of second string choices.

Lastly, he had announced in advance his intention to field a more defensive minded team prior to match day – at least giving fans the choice to go or not.

I disagreed with Robson’s team selection that day and i think it set a negative vibe for the rest of the season – but I think to make 10 changes to a winning team was bordering on the bizzare.

I could accpet 3 or 4 changes to rest the tiredest of players. But what he did was give 3 points away. For me every match is there to be won. This defeatest attitude against the bigger teams is detremental to team spirit.

If we lose against Burnley, Mick will have all the fans on his back. You may as well forget the last 2 wins, as Mick alone has brought anger from the fans. We are Wolves no sacrificial lambs. The mentalitlity is pathetic, the acts of a loser not a winner.

The South Bank was the only stand that they could have, the lower Steve Bull isn’t a large enough section for FA cup away fans and the North Bank can’t be used for away fans due the access to the stand.

    51. You hope we lose on Sunday? Sometimes i’m ashamed to sit in the same stand as people like you. Why would you want Wolves to lose on Sunday? Absolute joker.

    Spurs 0-1 Wolves 3 points
Man Utd 3-0 Wolves ‘reserves’ 0 points
    Wolves 2-0 Burnley 3 points
    =6 points

    Spurs 0-1 Wolves 3 points
Man Utd 2-1 Wolves ‘First team’ 0 points
    Wolves 0-0 Burnley 1 points
    =4 points

I know it’s far from factual, and the Man Utd result on Tuesday can never now be simulated as the variables on fitness/suspensions/run of the ball/luck/etc can never be replicated, but I feel a 2-0 defeat is still a good result (seeing as we lost 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. If fans looked at the reason MM has made this decision, rather than just be annoyed that they spent £50 at OT I think the numerous message boards and newspaper columns would be much quieter, as would the press.

Remember, if we beat Burnley on Sunday, we’ll have 19 points from 18 games, on a pro rata basis that equates to 38 points in the season, if we lose we’re on track for 33-34, what do you want? Let’s support the boys and move up the table.

No. 53 It’s a figure of speech mate, the vast majority of fans feel exactly the same as I do. I’m guessing you didn’t go just like most of the other happy clappers, otherwise you’d think differently.

What Mick did on Tues was extreme. I could understand him resting even five players, but 10 is ridiculous, not all those players have played every game this season and there is no way we can honestly say he picked a team that was ever going to beat Man Utd.

Did anyone even fancy us to beat Spurs. Not really. But we played our first team and won. Just like Burnley did against Arsenal and got a very credible draw.

I understand the logic behind resting players but not to the extent where you field a completely different team from one game to the next.

What Mick did completely undermines the integrity of the Premier League competition. Only when we’ve secured our premier league status, would I excuse the manager for picking a vastly under strength team and even then I’d never agree with 10 outfield changes.

This whole episode has cast a huge shadow of embarrassment over our club. The pressure on the ‘first team’ to beat Burnely will be immense. Let’s hope the players can cope with it.

the crucial difference between what the likes of wenger, ferguson and benitez have done in the past in fielding ‘weakened’ sides, and what mccarthy did on tuesday night, is that the former managers acted knowing the teams they put out were infinitely more capable of competing with the opposition, than was the wolves team mccarthy selected. mccarthy knew from the moment he decided on the team that they would lose, and that completely undermined the essence of competition and sporting integrity. in that sense, neither he nor the club have a leg to stand on in countering accusations of cheating both the supporters and other premier league clubs.

You can not compare Billy Wright’s team with todays team,Billy’s team would have been classed as one of the BIG four not fighting relegation, plus attitudes were different and money had’nt ruined football as a working class sport.I can understand MM for tuesdays team selection and why he did it.Blame the BIG FOUR they started fielding weaken teams years ago, thinking it was to there advantage with bigger games coming up, but now a so called “small” club does it to gain an advantage, its hammered in the press.Money is the root cause of all thats wrong with football and will be until it is taken away.I sympathize with wolves fans who went to utd giving up time and money, but we would have still got beat even if we had put out the first team, the Spurs game took a lot out of them and utd don’t lose two at home.

Another Happy Clapper who doesn’t go to games! If you had just squandered £100+ on a pathetic game at Manure, then you would be complaining as well. Especially when the CEO states that he can’t see what the fuss is all about!

Real supporters go to matches and speak about what they see, not what they imagine!

I can see the point of those who travelled to Old Trafford and in current times the money could have been better spent. So to you brave souls i have a lot of sympathy.

On the other hand if the premier league take action against us then it will truely show where the power is held. That is in the hands of the big four clubs. Wenger is a miserable moaning so and so, at the end of the day Mick has to do what he feels is in the best interests of the club and not in the best interests of arsenal or the other so called big teams.

Stuff them i say and when wenger says that Mick and Wolves have devalued the premiership then i say why have the big four consistently devauled the FA Cup by either not either playing or feilding their youth team.

It makes me sick that they think they can ride rough shod over every other team in the country as they think it all revolves around them.

To be honest i would much rather be in the championship with real club owners and fans any day of the week and away from those who only wish is to feather there own pockets.

Forever Wolves, lets hope we beat Burnley. But stuff the big four as they dont give a crap about us.

The premier league is not a super football league. It is a mixture of “have” and “have not” clubs. In the “fifties” I was proud to support the Wolves. Today I can only have a superficial interest.

well well well folks it is plain to see now what the Fat Controller thinks of us all. I respect MMcArthy but he got it wrong and now this club is definately in the spot light & for all the wrong reasons! Moxey should go as i have said before. We have a great & passionate fan base and a great stadium thanks to Sir Jack. But we desparately need a major change at this club. There has got to be someone out there who would take this club forward. We do have some good players who play there hearts out but we need more quality. January is looming so lets see if the fat controller opens the vault. Judging from the photo of him we can see who ate all the pie’s.
    Refund now please Moxey!!!!!
Come you wolves. Get out Moxey.

Like I said Yesterday I chose not to renew the season ticket I had had for 18 years following the Hoddle debacle and the lack of respect shown by Mr Moxey to the fans.

I really cannot believe some of the comments of the McCarthy can do no wrong brigade.

I am so glad I was brainwashed by the people in football during the late sixties early seventies, when every team tried to win every game and not this lot.

If you paid £50 quid to watch U2 play wembley and just before they were due to come on the management said sorry the guys did a gig 2 days ago so they are having a rest here is Achtung Baby they do good covers what would you think.

Listen guys here’s a suggestion carry on going to the games and supporting the team, the players are not at fault.

Try however to stop buying the merchandise from the club shop even if it is only for the rest of the season, I know this wont happen but it would be a way to show you concern at being taken for granted.

whatever level the game is played at it is about TRYING to beat the big boys

Were I understand what the fans that went to old trafford feel(and no I didn’t go because I could not afford it), lets not forget that non of us know what the team is going to be before a match-we go to watch Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C, we played members of the first team squad of wich 6 were full internationals and 4 were U21s of the whole squad 8 were full internationls and 5 were U21s, how would you feel if we picked up more injuries and still lost to man u then burnley?
lets put this behind us and get back to supporting the “team” because we are doing real damage by keeping it going.
    We are Wolves……………………

Lot of money to pay for 6 first team matches and 4 reserve games LOL.

Before you McCarthy fans jump down my throat
What team will he pick for the home matches you cant be sure now can you. But you will be happy as long as he plays a strong side against Burnley, Wigan, Stoke and Blackburn.

It’s somewhat sad how the culture has changed.
I grew up in the sixties, a time when we played to win, no matter who we played. Honesty was key, no diving, stay on your feet, play hard but fair.
What we see here is a form of cheating, and it’s not just McCarthy, it’s the face of football today. These are young athletes, surely three games in a week can be done. The Wolves once great image has been tarnished. Let the others cheat if they choose, we don’t have to.
All the people saying we would have lost anyway, probably said it about Spurs too.
Mr. Mcarthy, as a Wolves fan I expect you to try and motivate your players to win every game. I expect you to field the best team (changes yes, not 10). We could have beat MU, you choose to beat Burnley, Burnley is going to field their reserves because they will lose to us anyway, right.
Give me an honest team (Manager), win or lose.

Now we have the result of the Fulham/United game and we await our performance on Sunday=I like the presumption that Burnley will be a result for us I hope so BUT having analysed past result it as never been easy.

Summing all the views MM was wrong only a convincing performance to-morrow will in some way give him a little credibility again. But we must move on-
