McCarthy defends his selection

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 8:25AM GMT.

MAN UNITED V WOLVES 1 GD 15Mick McCarthy today defended his controversial decision to rest 10 players against Manchester United last night and pleaded with fans to back his judgement.

The Wolves boss shocked fans by axeing his entire outfield team from Saturday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham as his unfamiliar side crashed 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Wolves’ sold-out allocation of 2,530 paid up to £42 for tickets and many responded to McCarthy’s decision by chanting “We want our money back”, “Where is our first team?” and “£40 to watch the reserves”.

McCarthy insisted he had to make the wholesale changes because of risk of injury and stressed he wants fans to understand his thinking with Sunday’s crucial clash against Burnley looming.

“I can kind of understand the fans’ reaction, but that was the first team,” said the boss.

“I’ve got 21 players to pick from and they’re all first-team players.

“I would hope the fans understand because my decisions will judge whether we stay in the Premier League.

“I made some bad decisions last season and we had some poor performances, but nobody ever remembers them because we won the Championship.

“So if we stay up, everything is suddenly OK.”

Wolves have had 14 players injured at some point this season and they currently have Michael Kightly, Dave Edwards, Andy Keogh and Matt Murray on the long term casualty list.

“I can’t afford any more injuries,” said McCarthy.

“I make the decisions for what I think are for the good of my players, and my club.”

The Wolves boss revealed there is a much greater risk of injury if players play games within three days of each other – and he has science to back his theory.

“I looked at the findings from the Milan Lab (the High Tech Scientific Research Centre set up by AC Milan) where Chelsea manager Carlo Ancellotti says if the risk of injury from one game is 10 per cent, it rises by 30 or 40 per cent if another intensive game follows within three or four days,” he said.

McCarthy insisted he played his strongest side available because of fatigue to his regular first-teamers.

“I played the fittest, best, strongest team I could pick that hadn’t played on Saturday,” he said.

“That was my best team because they all had fresh legs.”

We spend months slogging our guts out to get promoted for the right to go to Old Trafford and compete in games like these, not just waive a white flag.

Remember Bryan Robson doing the same and the Sandwell lost the vital game after anyway and all respect too.

We have just got two superb wins and perhaps were finally getting some team chemistry going and need to build on that. If you were in the team that beat Spurs wouldn’t you want to go out and try to do the same to Man U?

Finally you are saying to the guys that got drafted in that they are mere cannon fodder and will destroy their self confidence too. He should be saying to them that if they play well that they can get in the first team by rights and not make them feel like no hopers.

Do I think he should have done what he did? No. I want us to compete in every game and I also question the impact on the “Second X1″. We run the risk of “them and us” emerging within the dressing room. What would I feel as a player if I’m not considered worthy for selection against Bolton but I can be canon fodder against Man U?

Do I accept it is his perogative as manager to select who he likes? Yes. He is manager and he will live or die on his decisions. There is logic behind what he has done even though it is a high risk strategy.

Do I think we’ll stay up? No. We have the worst squad in the division – injuries or no injuries. The best post after the Spurs game was the one that said we performed like a Championship side in a cup tie against one of the big boys. By the law of averages we will win the odd “cup tie” but you don’t stay up on that basis. The reality is that we have effectively scored one goal all season that has been “created in open play”. You cannot avoid relegation on the basis of Milijas crosses and Craddock / Doyle headers. You need more to survive or to deserve to survive in the Premiership.

I hope we do it for the sake of the thousands of loyal and high spending fans but we ain’t good enough and the manager ain’t good enough.

I think some of you lot have lost your marbles.

This season has to be about staying in this league. Why risk exhausted players for a game with a low chance of victory then not pick up 3 points against Burnley. Surely that has to be the more important game to us?

Saying that, I was not at the game and would have been very annoyed to have spent so much cash to see a ‘going through the motions performance’ – but surely any Wolves fan worth their salt, if asked now would they accpet last night’s team and performance if we could finish above the bottom three – would say yes?

For those of you at the Spurs game, players like Doyle worked their socks off and duly deserved the break and we want them fresh for Burnley.

I think this league and their spectators are unbelievably hypocritical when we see time after time the top 4 field teams of youth and squad players and nothing is said about the matter when they play lesser teams.

Also with the exception of Friend – does that team not include 10 players who have all played from the start or come on as subs?

All this fuss is ridiculous and lets just see what the comments are like on this board should we beat Burnley on Saturday. I think some of you will suddenly contract extremely short memories.

The Premier league don’t have a leg to stand on re: deducting points – what a stupid thing to say – lets just move on, look to Burnely, getting 3 points then take a look at the league standing on Saturday night – things could all look very different.

    Why McCarthy was right
    Why I support Mick’s decision last night….
1- It has been done before.
Manchester United fielded a team of no-marks against Hull on the final day of last season (Ritchie De Laet and Lee Martin, anyone?). Fulham stayed up in 2007 thanks in part to a 1-0 win against a Liverpool side with the likes of Steven Gerrard replaced by stiffs such as Gabriel Paletta and – horror of horrors! – Robbie Fowler. They did not face any action.
2- McCarthy was trying to maximise his team’s league performance.
In the above examples, both United and Liverpool were sacrificing Premier League performance as they had big Champions League games coming up. McCarthy’s decision selection was motivated by a genuine desire to score as many points as possible. By resting his first-teamers for a game they would probably have lost anyway, he thinks they have a better chance of winning forthcoming games against Burnley, Liverpool and Manchester City.
3- You can’t punish him for having a weak squad.
Big teams rest their best players all the time, but we barely notice because they have 20 full internationals in their squads. There is no material difference between Michael Owen playing up front for Manchester United, and Stefan Maierhofer playing for Wolves. They are both reserves. Wolves should not be castigated just because their back-up players are worse than United’s.
4- You have to prove that David Edwards is better than Kevin Foley.
All of the Wolves players who took the field last night were senior professionals. They might not be particularly good, but they are not children, and if they are in the squad then it seems a mite churlish to deny them the right to play occasionally. In any case, how do you prove beyond all doubt that Wolves’s front-line players are better than the second string?
5- There is no sympathy for teams with injuries.
When countless Blackburn players went down with swine flu, Rovers asked for a postponement. The Premier League politely reminded them football is a squad game, and until they have 25 players on their death beds they have to make a team out of whoever is available. Quite right too, but that precedent clearly means the authorities cannot insist teams pick the same 11 players for every game.
You might not thank McCarthy if you were Burnley, who will presumably find themselves up against the first-teamers on Sunday, but his team selection was both lawful and actually quite clever.
Last night’s goings-on provide proof positive that the biggest games take place at Turf Moor and Molineux, not Old Trafford and Anfield.
Popular wisdom says you win the league not by winning games against big sides, but by ensuring you can take care of business against the lesser teams.
Likewise, McCarthy’s selection policy clearly shows he considers Burnley at home a bigger game than Manchester United away.
So maybe, when managers of relegation candidates describe their season as ’38 cup finals’, they are actually right and not just whingeing.

    Get behind them!

I sat by 4 people last night who continually shouted abuse at the players with foul language used in the vacinity of children, I did however make my feelings known, and reiterate to them, if they want glory, they were in the wrong section of the stadium. MM is our manager – he makes the decisions that he thinks are right. Some of the posts on here don’t get the reason behind his decision. We can’t afford anymore injuries going into the xmas fixtures. MM has evidence that says there is a massively increased risk of injury when there are 2 matches close together. So there you have it – a solid reasoned decision.
MM’s job is to keep us in the PL. He will be judged on that basis only not one match in mid december against a team that we were unlikely to beat.
As for the last nights players feeling “second choice” or “reserves” those are words the newspapers and some of the posts on here use. MM says they are first team players. The players themselves are professionals and I would suggest are not bothered – they know the game.

I really fancied our first team to get something last night. United were weakened by injuries too and there wont be a better chance to go to old trafford and take them on. If we’d snatched a victory then mick would have gone down in history for taking us to spurs and man utd and getting 2 results…

    I left wolves at 3pm yesterday, arrived in manchester at half 6 (bloody road works).. something to eat and a beer or 2. Stayed in a hotel as I decided to enjoy the night with a meal and beers, didn’t want to drive home last night. in all it cost me;

    £54 in petrol
    £42 ticket
    £109 for hotel
    £40 for meal
    £20 in beer
    £5 parking fee
£184 for a day off work
and an earfull from the mrs for missing the kids’ nativity play to go to the match with a mate (think i’ll regret that one)

Cheers mick, wish you said on Saturday that the entire team was going to be changed.

    Nice one mate, top job.

P.s. just got back home and realised that there are so many better ways to spend my time and money. in all it cost me around £470 for yesterday’s match (in real terms).. not happy. balls to Sunday’s “big” match, i think i’ll stay in bed, watch it on some online stream on the laptop and have a nice relaxing day doing sod all with the mrs. there relaly is more to life than doing this every other bloody week

Well whether or not he was right to send out a reserve side he was criminal in his selection of the team.He had a great opportunity to select the players he had bought to the club IN THE POSITIONS THEY WERE PLAYING FOR THERE FORMER CLUBS.ZUBAR bought as a central defender played right back.FOLEY bought as a right back played midfield.THREE left backs playing NON of whom are any good. What sort of team was that????? IMHO he needs to be moved upstairs and use his undoubted talents spotting young players and leave the team coaching and proper SELECTION to someone who knows what they are doing.

I agree with the last two paragraphs of 33-luke mole-and I wonder if MM can be considered to have brought the game into disrepute. His attempt to protect certain squad players should be extended to the training ground where we appear to get more injuries than when playing a competetive game.
would’nt it be ironic if we are eventually relegated because of last night’s 3 goal difference at a time when there was justifiable expectation of at least a point from an injury hit United?

Mick should be applauded for having the guts to make the changes he did. Football is a team game and lets face it, not one of us ‘real’ fans expected to go to Old Trafford and win. Mick hardly fielded a reserve team either, Hahnemann, Zubar, Mancienne, Foley, Castillo, Maierhofer and Surman are all players who deserve to be in the first team squad if not even the starting line up. Wolves have played most games this season at a high tempo, chasing every ball and I’d much rather have a fully refreshed team out on Saturday or our established first 11 than jaded players who don’t do them selves justice against Burnley who we must see as a genuine chance to get the 3 points.
We must not forget that it was Mick who signed each and every one of these players, and it was Mick who led us to the championship last season. Even millions of pounds can’t buy you survival however we have got a squad with some individual talents, but overall a great team morale and work ethic, and these will stand us in good stead at the end of the season.
The top 4 regularly field so called ‘weaked’ teams – but they are just utilising their squad.

Lets get of Mick’s back and support the team. Every player in the squad as an impact of the overall morale within it, so slating Mick due to his so called ‘weakend’ team selection hardly does much for the team who did indeed play.

I spent 11 hours driving to Man U last night. Hubby and I and 2 children aged 16 are all home and away season ticket holders.
We couldn’t afford to take them to the cup game as we worked out it was going to cost over £300 for one match( and my husband is self employed and had no work on.)
Yesterday, full of high hopes and for their first visit to Old Trafford we expected.
We expected a team to be put out who would compete at the highest level. The team at Tottenham earned the right to play at Man U.#
As posters have previously detailed, what must it do for a players confidence to see that they play so well and then a mickey mouse manager pulls a stunt like this. Conversely, for the players who played last night, the knowledge that they are seen as not good enough and worth risking an injury?
Surely Morgan wants to see his team compete at the likes of man u and not just make the numbers up?
No thanks to the highways agency who meant that we crawled at 5mh for 2 hours on the M6- what clueless idiot dreamed that up- but then again as a football supporter we are completely expendable.

Also man u, theatre of dreams and no food at the start of the match or at half time. What a contemptuous way to treat the fans.

Finally a special thanks to west midlands police who requested this match be on a midweek. Thank you for the 11 hour 166 mile journey to Altrincham :( On a Saturday I would have gone on the train and kept my carbon footprint down, showed the children around Manchester and had a better day all around. Whilst I sympathise with all the supporters that paid £42 last night – this could have been me – there is a lot of logic to what happened here but I hope that this does not backfire on MM.
I was at Spurs and in his defence there is no way Doyle would have been able to put in a proper shift and with the effort put in by players like Stearman, Ward, Berra, Craddock and Ebanks-Blake on Saturday, we need to ensure that they are fresh for the 6 pointer against Burnley.
We better not be docked points, as many other sides like Man Utd have done this!
In terms of the game, we held our own until we gave away a clumsy penalty. Then it was always going to be a struggle with Hoff up front on his own. Poor defending for the second and a class goal for the last. Friend should have scored to give us the lead and Gibson should have been sent off. The positives were that Zubar and Foley are back, Surman looks a good prospect and Friend did not look phased!

They too have injuries and have been out of sorts lately. I honestly thought a draw was possible before I saw our team selection. We knew there would have to be changes – but ten? We have lost respect. There is now even more pressure on us to beat Burnley. I do not want Mick out but I believe he was wrong to make so many changes. Home games are away games for me, if you see what I mean, and I would not wish to make the journey to find ten changes. It takes the edge off the chant “We are Wolves”. I didn’t go last night but there is always 2 sides to every story, Mick should have maybe kept the spine of the team together i.e craddock, berra, henry and maybe the like of blake and jarvis but we were chasing the ball for literally 90 minutes on Saturday so it will take some affect on the players and when you have 3 games in eight days you do need to rotate your squad after all thats why you have 20-30 players in your squad.

I feel for the fans who paid £42 but would you be complaining and asking for a refund if we nicked a draw?! I don’t think so after all you go there to support the team.

Some morans on here think that sacking MM is the right thing to do! either you are albion fans or just plain stupid, I bet every one was kissing MM’s backside on Saturday and now he does something you don’t like you call for his head!

If Ebanks-Blake needs some confidence in front of goal (cows A*** with a banjo) why didn’t he start? Hoff better than Iwelumo? Halford??? We were odds on to lose last night whatever team we put out. We have to win on Sunday and then even if we lose against Liverpool, we will be at 19 points after 19 games – the half way stage. We should be delighted if we average a point per game. That will keep us up.

I have supported Wolves for 30 years and been to almost every home game and a great number of away matches too. Last season was my proudest moment. Let’s put this argument to bed. By resting 10 players, we handed Man U the initiative and MM was not thinking of the fans that were up there. However after the effort put in on Saturday, if we went with the same team plus an Edwards replacement, we would of probably still lost, might have got other injuries and had players not fresh for Burnley. This was always going to be the critical game over the Christmas period.
We better not have egg on our faces come 3.15 Sunday but I reckon we will be back out of the bottom 3 and things will be looking much rosier with full strength teams ready for Liverpool and Man City.

I’ve never written on here before but I feel compelled to now. I’ve been pretty firmly behind Mick so far but last night I snapped.
As far as I am concerned, he might as well have taken a hack saw to the statues outside Molineux and then relieved himself on the remains, because to me that’s pretty much what he’s done to the image and good name of our club. For god sake this is a sport, you are meant to compete and more to the point we are bloody WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS! League winners, FA cup winners, League cup winners, European pioneers! It’s shameful we’re too scared of Man Utd to even try. I feel utterly disgusted and my idea of who we are and what this club represents has been totally betrayed. I’d rather go back to freezing on a rickety, knackered south bank, with two sides of the ground shut and no money. At least we still had pride as I recall, no matter how rubbish our team and ground.

Mick, Moxey, Morgan you should all be ashamed. With your cowardly attitude you’ve let down the club, the fans and more importantly all of the great players who sweated blood to win things for Wolves. I hope we get nothing at all on Saturday because we don’t deserve it.

Going by the way some people have been moaning about the reserve side fielded by Wolves at Old Trafford last night, you could be forgiven for thinking Mick McCarthy had driven an empty minibus around the streets of Wolverhampton yesterday afternoon and asked the first 11 able-bodied men he encountered if they fancied playing football against Manchester United.

Strange as it may seem, those men that eventually lost 3-0 are all highly-paid professional footballers who have actually played the game before, often to a standard high enough to earn them inclusion in the senior squad of a club kicking around the lower reaches of the Premier League. Nevertheless, McCarthy has been roundly booed and hissed for sending out an unrecognisable team that had absolutely no chance of getting a result against the champions, mainly by myopic Wolves supporters and pundits who have swooned like Victorian ladies because they think he was duty-bound to send out a more recognisable side that had absolutely no chance of getting a result against the champions.

The moaning of Wolves fans who’ve been complaining about wasting money travelling to support their “reserves” has been particularly revealing, suggesting that many of them think so little of their club they’d have cancelled plans to travel if they’d known their side would comprise of players who needed their support more than the usual first-teamers. When all’s said and done, surely cheering on one group of players in orange shirts as they get hammered at the Theatre of Dreams is much the same as cheering on another?

McCarthy has been typically bullish in defence of his team selection, stating that eggheaded boffins wearing white coats and thick glasses conducted tests which showed his first-choice players were all knackered after beating Spurs at the weekend and needed to be rested ahead of next weekend’s much more winnable match against Burnley. “What you saw tonight was the best team we had available,” he harrumphed. “I’ve got 21 players to choose from, that was my first team.”

Possibly aghast that their brand will be devalued if managers of other bottom-feeders follow McCarthy’s lead, the Premier League has demanded he elaborate. “The Premier League board have written to Wolverhampton Wanderers to request their observations in relation to the team fielded in their League fixture against Manchester United,” droned a statement that was hopefully written by the well-fed blazer with the shiniest buttons and the most expensive pen. “Once the observations are received the Board will decide whether any further action is warranted.”

As judging what constitutes the best available side for a top-flight club is entirely subjective and probably not best done by a middle-aged man with a bad comb-over in a London office, this statement sounds like so much hot air and sabre-rattling. The Premier League board would probably be better served considering how it’s let the gap between the haves and have-nots in the “the best league in the world” widen to such an extent that managers of teams at the bottom have taken to waving the white flag against top teams before a ball has been kicked, in an effort to guarantee long-term survival.

Should Wolves beat Burnley, McCarthy will be vindicated in his decision to go about his job in the right way by examining the big picture and making a difficult decision in the best interests of his club. Even if they lose, he can still argue that he did what was best. But come season’s end, if Chelsea or Manchester United field their U-11s against a team Wolves desperately need to lose to stay up, here’s hoping he doesn’t turn hypocrite and bleat incessantly about the terrible injustice of it all.

I’m a United fan and was disappointed Wolves did not have a real go last night. We have an injury crisis in defence and any team that has a real go at the heart of our defence will probably score at the moment. Took my son who supports Wolves and his disappointment was tempered by the fact that at least he got to see Rooney play.
I can understand MM to some extent but 10 changes was taking it way to far. Listening to his comments on Sky sports this morning he appears like many managers to not give a thought to the time and expense ordinary football fans put in to watching their team. You’d be better off with fergie’s son in charge, might get a few players on loan from his dad as well.
If you enter the pitch thinking you will lose (or selecting a below strength side) then of course you will.
Oh and playing a below strength side in the final league game of the season away at Hull is so different from what happened last night as to be laughable.

OK, so I went to United last night, it cost me all of the above, a day off work, a 3AM return. It was galling and horrible, especially to lose at that giant excuse for a library. BUT I’m still fully behind Mick – how can you forget that just four days ago he engineered a fantastic victory at Spurs, the same victory that surely anyone who was there will testify, took a 110% effort from EVERY player for the whole 96 minutes. They were tanked by the end – a huge part of the win was the constant stream of bodies on the line and the MASSIVE efort on show. As such, there was no way they would be 100% fit vs United, let alone had they played last night and vs Burnley as well. Can we afford to have first team players at 70% fitness for Burnley?

Fact is, some of you haters all wanted Mick out two years ago when we finished 7th. You’ve always had your knives behind your coats, waiting to be proved right, and here you are, willing to divide the whole club just to prove a point.

At first I was dumbfounded & disappointed, but looking at it in the cold light of day it is a squad game & as someone said earlier when Blackburn had swine flu sweeping through the club they ask for a postponement. The EPL told them its a squad game & unless the whole squad is down you can field a “1st eleven”. If the EPL try & deduct points from Wolves we know it will head to the courts. But say they try & deduct 10pts from Wolves…a point for each player….will they deduct 5pts from Man Utd the same for each player changed from the last game. Statiticians will be out scrutinising all games see the EPL began to see if this behaviour as happened before & of course it has. The segment about Chelsea or Man Utd fielding an under 11 side against a team Wolves want to lose to stay up would bring the game into disrepute as these would not be squad players. Surely at the begining of the season each club would have to register their sqaud to the EPL, we know this can change during the season but isn’t what administration is for from each club.

Keep up the cracking work Mick! You will be judged at the end of the season but in the meantime it is imperative that we all get behind the flaming club or we’re in grave danger of doing far more damage than an expected away defeat to one of the worlds top clubs could ever do!!!!!

Mr Moxey needs to be very careful about how he handles requests for refunds.

It is a criminal offence to obtain pecuniary advantage by deception.

Selling tickets to the Man U game on the basis that the Wolves team would be complying with Premiership regulations and fielding their strongest side, while ending up fielding the reserve team could be considered to be an offence.

Forgetting the ill-will caused by the clubs undeniable deceit it would be advisable to take legal advice immediately about the potential criminal offence that has taken place.

I can see both sides of this. If I’d travelled up to Man Utd last night and spent my hard earned cash I would have been peeved. But on the other hand can see Micks point of view. There are 3 teams we are very unlikley to beat away. Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea. So why risk your best team? Wenger and Ferguson do it all the time so why not us? Simple isnt it! Get off his back and trust the guy! He is the best manager for the job if you dont like it you know what to do.

I am right cross that fans have been conned out of so much money to watch a reserve team, when they are paying to watch a Premiership game, and the rules say that the club must field the strongest team available.

This deception is unforgivable and only low-lives can attempt to justify this action, which might well be a criminal offence, or even end up with the club being deducted 10 points!

We need a higher level of morality at Wolves, the current Blair/Cameron type morality is not what the Wolves are all about!

Burnley drew with Arsenal and beat Man U. Portsmouth barely lost to Chelsea. Compare these to our results and it doesnt take an Einstein to see that we are bottom 3 material.
It was the best time to take on Man U with their injuries and I would rather that we tried to gain as many points as possible from ALL matches than to concede some and hope to beat the “weaker” teams. Who was to guess that we would beat Spurs? Right now, Spurs would probably beat Man U. And what about Villa? We could have beaten them but they are 3rd in the league. If thy were 3rd when we played them would Mick have played the reserves against them?
I personally dont think Burnley will be easy to beat – especially as we cant score goals from open play. Man U with their defensive problems may have been easier in hindsight.
It just goes to show that our mentality is flawed. Instead of trying to instil a stubborn winning mentality, Mick is doing the opposite and telling the that they are not good enough to mix it with the big boys.

From an outsiders point of view.
I feel sorry for the supporters that feel cheated.
I feel sorry for the other teams that feel cheated.
But for me, the real mistake was that I thought you could have got something from the game. Man Utd very depleted. While Wolves were on the back of two wins. Blues have won five in a row playing a settled team. Their players look anything but jaded because winning is the best tonic you can have. Hull stayed up last season by riding the crest of their wave while it lasted, beating teams like Arsenal. We followed Mick’s idea under the awful Bryan Robson and almost came unstuck. If you beat Burnley MU will soon be forgotten but things don’t always work out as they should and upsetting the rhthym you had going could backfire.
This isn’t a p**s take, just my genuine opinion.

Whatever our thoughts are and its clear we are divided in whether we think its right or wrong, we need to GET OVER IT as there is a team that needs our 110% support on Sunday. If there are murmours of discontent this will filter through and Burnley will do us. Come on everyone, 3 points and we could go 12th. And we will be halfway to our target of staying up. They need us now more than ever. We are Wolves.

Burnley drew with Arsenal and Chelsea only just saw off Portsmouth with the help of a penalty. Considering that we got well beat by Arsenal and Chelsea, what does this mean about the quality of our team?
We lost to Portsmouth – they actually beat us quite easily. And i’m that we may lose to Burnley. From what I’ve seem of them, they play quite fearlessly and can score goals from open play which we cant seem to do. They’ve also beaten Man U – when of course as we all know we surrendered to them.
Burnley will probably quite relish playing against us off a good result against Arsenal and If I were a Burnly fan I would definately fancy my chances.
Wolves have been shamed by Mick and if we lose against Burnley, he will have dug his own grave.
Sad state of affairs really. If we had gone to Man U and tried to win with our best players, we may have got a result as they are at their most vulnerable right now.
Also if Mick is going to give up against the “good” teams where will this end? Who are the unbeatable teams? Villa are 3rd. If they were 3rd when we played them would he have conceded the game also?
I feel he has undone his good work agianst Spurs by doing this. The team’s lost momentum and the lose will bring doubts to the team. Mick needs to foster an atmosphere of stubborness, fearlessness and can-do approach to the squad. Not one of inferiority.
We need someone more inspirational than Mick. Even if by some miracle we survive and of course as a true fan, I hope that we do, I still think we need a manager. Mick has done what he can – we need a step up.

I can’t belive how much is bein made of this. When I heard the team news like everyone I was shocked, but when you actually think about it, it could be a great move. If we win on Sunday with results going our way we could go as high as 12th in the league (above burnley).
I do feel for the fans who travelled but we went there to support our club not just the players we consider our 1st team.
If we are in the premier league at the end of the season I wonder if the so called fans who are calling for Mick to be sacked, will be celebrating our survival or not, ofcourse they will!
Now let’s support Mick and the boys in our biggest game of the season!

Having chatted to a few fellow travellers on Tuesday, I think we all need to get this into perspective. Teams like Man Utd, Arsenal etc field weakend teams in competitions like the League Cup and supporters know this, so they make the choice as to whether they want to spend good money on going to see their team. The reason I feel cheated is that I paid my money to see the team that so brilliantly beat Tottenham and is, by and large, the same sixteen players week in and week out. MM would have known on Sunday or Monday what he planned to do at Old Trafford and if Moxey had an ounce of decency, he would have told us all that we were going to rest the first team for an undoubtedly more important game against Burnley. Then we could have decided whether to go or not and there would have been no arguments.
As it is the club is now in a position where it is unlikely to be able to defend its actions in relation to Premiership rules, will get fined and all for the share of the profits from twelve grand’s worth of ticket money. Furthermore the club has undoubtedly upset 3000 of its most loyal supporters. It pains me to think our CEO is so adeptly short sighted and, worse, puts a few grand in the pocket above the esteem of the fans of the club. Simply pay the £42 back to everyone and lets move on.

M.M. is playing the percentage game, making the pitch smaller, resting key players for winnable games etc.

In short, he is trying to maximise our points total to try and ensure we stay up. We need to do this because we are at present a championship side in the bottom of the Premiership.

Burnley have looked a better side than us so far this season, but come Sunday evening, we could very well be above them thanks to these tactics.

We beat Man Utd last time we were in the premiership (like Burnley have this) at home. We were relegated bottom of the table. It was very little consolation.

If we beat Burnley on sunday with a goal in the last ten minutes due to the fact we’ll be a yard sharper having had a rest period, how many fans who went to Old Trafford will truly care about refunds?! I completely understand the fans frustrations – at least the ones who went to watch Wolves – not the ones who went simply to see Man Utd – Yes there is more than a few I’m sure. But surely the bigger picture is that it’s vital we do everything in our power to stay in this league. Our first eleven could have been beaten 4-0, then we’d have a lack of confidence and a similar result to the Brum game where we suffered after trouncings from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Everyone who is moaning, I do see your point, but I don’t think you should be so harsh on Mick! He is the manager, and know’s what is best for the team! If you support a team, you should be happy to see any of our players play, and most of that team have played at some point this season already! Last time we played Man U we lost too, so if we’re honest we know whatever team we put out there, we only had a slim chance of winning. Give Mick a break. If you support the wolves you shouldn’t care if we win or lose, or who is in the team!

Burnley got a point at home against Arsenal – It really shows the difference in attitude between the clubs – one thinks and plays like winners, the other holds out the white flag.
Over all the years I have followed wolves, that would have to be worst I have ever felt – losing happens but to not even try – sorry but that is a loser attitude.
