Manchester United 3 Wolves 0

Tuesday 15th December 2009, 10:00PM GMT.

MAN UNITED V WOLVES 2 GD 15An unfamiliar Wolves team crashed to defeat at Old Trafford as boss Mick McCarthy chose to rest his entire outfield line-up from the side that beat Tottenham.

McCarthy made no secret of the fact that he was going to make “a couple of changes” with Sunday’s potentially pivotal clash with Burnley very much in mind.

But to make 10 from the team that beat Tottenham on Saturday was seen to increase the pressure on the returning regulars for this weekend’s game.

George Friend and Stefan Maierhofer made their first starts in the Premier League, Matt Hill and Andrew Surman their second, Ronald Zubar and Kevin Foley returned from injury, while George Elokobi, Michael Mancienne and Greg Halford also came in.

Predictably, United started on top and Wayne Rooney forced a point-blank save from Marcus Hahnemann justr three minutes in after the ball broke to him 10 yards out to force the first of five home corners in the first 10 minutes.

Wolves forced the next chance when George Friend, who was only recalled from his loan at Scunthorpe yesterday, volleyed narrowly over after Stefan Maierhofer flicked on Greg Halford’s long throw.

But, not surprisingly, United always carried the greater threat and Rooney turned Mancienne only to see his shot deflected wide. Nemanja Vidic also fired narrowly over before United got the breakthrough they were seeking in the 29th minute.

It came via the spot after Zubar needlessly handled Darron Gibson’s corner, and Rooney stepped up to confidently despatch low to Hahnemann’s right for his 13th goal of the season.

United made it 2-0 on 43 minutes when Vidic’s towering header from Gibson’s corner proved too powerful for Hahnemann to hold, after the Serbian defender rose above Maierhofer and Zubar.

The home side almost scored a third with the last kick of the half when Hahnemann blocked Gabriel Obertan’s shot with his legs.

With the game seemingly lost and the pace almost that of a friendly, the sell-out 3,000 contingent of Wolves fans began to vent their anger with chants of “We want our money back.”

The visitors forced a rare half chance when Friend lashed over, after Surman turned back Maierhofer’s cross.

But United made it 3-0 when Antonio Valencia crashed home first time to leave Hahnemann rooted to the spot, after Paul Scholes’s ball over the top had been hooked into the danger area by Dimitar Berbatov.

With the game now well beyond being competitive, Wolves supporters again made their feelings known about McCarthy’s selection policy with loud chants of “Where is our first team?”, “£40 to watch the reserves” and again “We want our money back.”

McCarthy’s selection was hugely controversial, but all will be forgiven if Wolves beat Burnley.

This certainly will not be forgiven if we do indeed beat Burnley. The game on Sunday is a priority for us, but when did the game tonight all of a sudden not be?

This could prove very costly at the end of the season if it comes down to goal difference. I thought Mick was a competitor, but he has gone down in my estimation tonight. With that United team, had we stuck with the XI that beat Spurs, we might have been able to get something.

Lets hope it pays off on Sunday.

Why i agree we need to rest players for Burnley,
i feel this was a let down to our fine away supporters paying £42. to watch a reserve team.

OK I didn’t go but given the ridiculous ticket price the fans who did deserve better. It would cost the club £120 000 to refund them (even half the cost would be a gesture) which is chicken feed and I suspect it won’t happen again this season as we have no more ‘unwinnable’ fixtures. Worth it to keep unity and togetherness in the club. Come on Jez show some respect for the people who pay your wages! Still the last sentence of the article says it all.

Please can someone explain what micko was thinking?
When I heard the news I could not beleive what I was hearing! Why bother going to Manchester?
He should have phoned FA and told them add 3points to man u total!
When we lost to ARSENAL]CHELSEA and then against BRUM this micko guy came out and said even though we were expected to lose to ARSENAL/CHELSEA it had dented the confidence of the players affecting the performance against BRUM!!So what does he do??Throws the game after Wolves had won there last two games!!You want to make changes fine make two three four but why change the whole outfield?
To rest the players?? For god sake we play on sunday! The rested players were on a super high there is a strong possibility we would have got a positive result!!What if we lose on sunday?? this is crazy decision!!If we had put out the squad that played and won at spurs and they had lost it would have not been by 3goals as come the end of season goals different could be the difference of staying up!!! has he forgotton that we did not finish in the playfuls the season before last due to ONE goal!!IN recent international breaks how many times have Wolves won when two thirds of the squad have had a break for the international games for two weeks ?NONE!!!
This is why I call this guy a MUPPET!!!
This is why I WILL WANT HIM OUT!!!
We have 38 games we cant be throwing games away!!!

No, all will not be forgiven if we beat Burnley. We are looking at a Man Utd team who are fragile at the least and if we had put out a first team we could have at least gained a point.
I think that McCarthy’s team selection tonight is the worst management decision in the 35 years that I have supported our club. The fans who travelled to Old Trafford will be outraged and quite rightly so.
His comments before the game, talking about being slapped back down to earth when we go to Old Trafford sums up our manager’s approach.
I would also like to apologise to fans of Chelsea and Arsenal who would at least expect us to challenge in what is, at the end of the day, a premiership match.

I am absolutely livid with McCarthy over his team selection.

With the exception of Jody Craddock we have a team that should be physically able to cope with playing a mid-week match yet McCarthy chooses to rest all the outfield players who did so well against Spurs. I don’t accept the argument that the rested players will benefit from not playing mid-week. The team gained confidence from winning back-to-back wins and would have been in the right frame of mind to challenge Man U.

We need to scrap for every single point as each one is valuable and now the pressure is on to win the Burnley game to get us back out of the bottom three and keep us in touch with the pack ahead of us.

McCarthy has cheated the fans with his team selection and deserves a reprimand

I remember MM saying when we lost to Man Utd in the league cup earlier in the season, that it made him angry that we rolled over had our bellies tickled and then sent back home. Well MM this time you have excelled yourself, to make 10 outfield changes to a team that had just won two on the bounce, is really mind blowing. You rolled over before a ball was even kicked. Sir Alex must have laughing his socks off when the team was announced.God forbid if we lose to Burnley on Sunday you should be sacked, and if Morgan or Moxey are reading this forum you should make some sort of good will gesture to the fans who bought tickets. We don’t have the luxury of fielding reserve teams, EVERY POINT NEEDS TO BE CONTESTED. I’m so angry it’s untrue. What if we do beat Burnley, who’s to say we couldn’t have got a draw or even more against a VERY below par Man Utd team? Who’d have give us a prayer at White Hart Lane?

My feeling is that MM did the Club a huge disservice on a number of fronts:

    1. He denied his best players tha chance to play at Old Trafford – any decent pro would want to play in that game. How does denying them the chance help confidence and self esteem?
    2. Losing 3-0 did nothing for our goal differential which could be crucial at the end of the season. We may have lost anyway if our best squad had been on the pitch but we will never know now, will we?
    2. The team has won two on the trot coming onto this game, why not field the best team and have a go? Aston Villa did and got the result they deserved. I thought the idea was to build team confidence- I fail to see how this decision today helps that.
    3. Now we go into the Burnley game and MM has a no excuses need to get a win. If he could have pulled off a draw at Man U he would have faced less pressure and the team could have gone at Burnley. I suspect we shall see a cautious effort on Sunday.

The team today did its best but it was a dismal match overall and the travelling fans got screwed. We generated no shots on target despite having some openings.

McCarthy burned a good many bridges with his team selection. On the face of it, his reasoning is sound enough, but we’ve already seen in the Blues game what happens when the Club and management heap pressure on a particular fixture; that’s now the case magnified tenfold for the Burnley game.
But anyone who paid face price for a ticket last night, not to mention travel and other expenses, has every right to feel disenchanted with all concerned, it’s hard not to feel that their loyalty’s been abused- I paid just 15 quid to a tout for my ticket; they couldn’t give them away outside the ground, obviously, Wolves aren’t much of a ‘draw’ in this division. I hope we survive, but there are right and wrong ways to go about it- not sure that last night’s approach can be taken as the blueprint.

The club should refund the tickets to our fans without even being asked to, & maybe then all will be forgiven if we beat Burnley.

I’m probably on my own here…but I’m going to try & defend Mick’s team selection.

We played very well against Villa, Stoke & Everton but were torn apart by Arsenal & Chelsea. The team that emerged for the Blues game was clearly affected by those defeats…and Mick obviously didn’t want to risk that happening again against Burnley now that were playing well again & winning.

Our strength has been ‘putting a shift in’ & the Spurs game was particularly hard. Another hard game & potential heavy defeat could have prompted another inept display against Burnley & pretty well ended the season.

Mick will feel he’s given us the best possible chance of beating Burnley, and doing everything he can to keep us up by making sure we win the games we can.

So have I convinced anyone who went that Mick was right?

Well Mick well done, I applaud you as the whole league will treat us with utter contempt! We have just girfted Man U 3 points without even trying. I cant understand why Wolves made the trip if you were going to pick that side. Man U, were injury it, 2 recognized defenders, and they came off a loss from Villa. Wolves must play their full strength side every game, we cant afford the luxury of fielding weakened teams against anyone considering where we are in the league. He considers winning at Burnley more likely than winning away at Man U.
So Mick made a decision last night that he didnt want to risk his main players especially considering the triple injury hit we’ve had in the last week or so.
Serious pressure on the club for Sunday. But tenfold worse if we dont win on Sunday for Mick.

McCarthy quite rightly is taking some stick for last nights team selection.
It is said he made his decision to ‘save’ our first 11 from tiredness, injuries or whatever BUT he has a duty also to the travelling fans to put out a team capable of giving a game to the opposition and clearly this was NOT done – he as good as accepted defeat beofre a ball was kicked!
Wolves squad is relatively small for the PL but even so 10 CHANGES was grossly over the top and come Sunday if Burnley do turn us over – and remember they have yet to win away and when Wolves are involved in those types of situations, we always become the victims – the outrage which will follow will make Steve Morgan’s sleeplessness even more of a problem!
Wolves have a travelling fan base equal almost to any other team and to put out a reserve side against of all teams Man. Utd totally beggars belief!
If Morgan was to offer a refund to all those travelling fans it would indeed compensate them for their time and travel BUT in no way will that team selection be compensated for.
McCarthy may well have the support of the Wolves board but there are many fans who do not support him and after last nights fiasco I am sure many more have also joined that bandwagon.
Should McCarthy not keep Wolves in the PL this season, last nights game will forever be thrown back at him and any trust in this man will drop to an extremely low level even amongst the happy-clappers.
So, Sunday it’s Burnley, can we beat them?

He paid £60 return for his train ticket plus £42 quid for his match ticket plus over £40 quid for a hotel room, plus beer and food etc, and lost two days off work in the bargain. Here are some comments from a national newspaper this morning – ‘Sir Alex Ferguson clocked up his 900th league game last night as Manchester United boss – and few have been as easy as this. The outcome was decided the moment Wolves boss Mick McCarthy announced his line-up. It was not so much a team selection as a suicide note.’ AND
Sir Alex said ‘I think with the changes we’re making, we’re not getting the continuity of performance and that was reflected in the way we started.’
So Mick McCarthy swops and changes his teams to gain results when Sir Alex, the man who has won multi PL titles, 2 CL’s etc etc says ‘we are not getting the continuity of performance…’
Who knows best Mick McCarthy or Sir Alex? – difficult one that!
And the comment on the team selection? Interesting that it was said to be a suicide note – I wonder what that means?

I thought , obviously wrongly since I am a muppet who knows nothing about football ,that we had won the right to play in the premier league in order to COMPETE with these teams . Micks decision works on so many levels.
    1) We were clearly exhausted following the Spurs game. And 3 games in 8 days on the same players would clearly endanger our chances of out running the likes of Burnley.
    2) We have maintained the confidence in our first team for the big match on Sunday.
    3) Some of the second string have been given an opportunity to stake a claim for first team football. Mancienne, Foley, Zubar grabbed the opportunity. Others, especially Mairhoffer didn’t.
    3) We now have a fully fit side to play Burnley. What I mean by that is we have no injuries. It is a known fact that the more tired your legs are the more chance you have of getting injured.

I totally understand the management reasons for doing this. If you take the emotion of the fans and the expence out of the scenario, then it make logical sense.

It is not idiotic by any stretch of the imagination. It is brave and shows we are willing to do whatever it takes to stay in this league.

Why McCarthy was right and why
    I support Mick’s decision last night….

1- It has been done before.
Manchester United fielded a team of no-marks against Hull on the final day of last season (Ritchie De Laet and Lee Martin, anyone?). Fulham stayed up in 2007 thanks in part to a 1-0 win against a Liverpool side with the likes of Steven Gerrard replaced by stiffs such as Gabriel Paletta and – horror of horrors! – Robbie Fowler. They did not face any action.
2- McCarthy was trying to maximise his team’s league performance.
In the above examples, both United and Liverpool were sacrificing Premier League performance as they had big Champions League games coming up. McCarthy’s decision selection was motivated by a genuine desire to score as many points as possible. By resting his first-teamers for a game they would probably have lost anyway, he thinks they have a better chance of winning forthcoming games against Burnley, Liverpool and Manchester City.
3- You can’t punish him for having a weak squad.
Big teams rest their best players all the time, but we barely notice because they have 20 full internationals in their squads. There is no material difference between Michael Owen playing up front for Manchester United, and Stefan Maierhofer playing for Wolves. They are both reserves. Wolves should not be castigated just because their back-up players are worse than United’s.
4- You have to prove that David Edwards is better than Kevin Foley.
All of the Wolves players who took the field last night were senior professionals. They might not be particularly good, but they are not children, and if they are in the squad then it seems a mite churlish to deny them the right to play occasionally. In any case, how do you prove beyond all doubt that Wolves’s front-line players are better than the second string?
5- There is no sympathy for teams with injuries.
When countless Blackburn players went down with swine flu, Rovers asked for a postponement. The Premier League politely reminded them football is a squad game, and until they have 25 players on their death beds they have to make a team out of whoever is available. Quite right too, but that precedent clearly means the authorities cannot insist teams pick the same 11 players for every game.
You might not thank McCarthy if you were Burnley, who will presumably find themselves up against the first-teamers on Sunday, but his team selection was both lawful and actually quite clever.
Last night’s goings-on provide proof positive that the biggest games take place at Turf Moor and Molineux, not Old Trafford and Anfield.
Popular wisdom says you win the league not by winning games against big sides, but by ensuring you can take care of business against the lesser teams.
Likewise, McCarthy’s selection policy clearly shows he considers Burnley at home a bigger game than Manchester United away.
So maybe, when managers of relegation candidates describe their season as ’38 cup finals’, they are actually right and not just whingeing.

Let us put a few facts on the table.

1 Wolves were promoted as Champions, Birmingham were runners up and 7 points adrift

2 Both sets of management used their skill and professional judgement in the close season to purchase players for the Premiership.

3 Average ticket price Wolves £30, Birmingham £34

4 After 17 games, the Birmingham fans for their £34 find themselves in 6th position with a possible European campaign to look forward to.

5 After 17 games, for our £30 we are delerious about being out of the bottom three for 48 hours and looking forward to evading relegation by the skin of our teeth. Rather like a condemned man being ecstatic that his execution has been postponed for 2 days.

6 Our team is so good that it needs to sacrifice three points in one match in the hope of gaining three points at home from a mediocre team currently in 13th position

I have supported this club for ALL of my 45 years, as have my Father and Grandfather before me, whilst being sorrounded & taunted by Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal supporters. I have made the pilgrimage, an awful long way from OZ, whilst we were on our yoyo trip from Div 2 and back up. I have endured the many close shaves with promotion and that is why… I support MM to the hilt, he got us there and in style and until his tenure is up, I will continue to do so.

I acknowleded that this was tough on the Wolves fans that made the trip and I think there should be some degree of compensation made.

I believe that it was the correct decision, though maybe 5-6 players may have been my call, anyway Burnley will be the litmus test.

Despite fielding a team, referred to as reserves, Wolves were defeated only by 3 goals… It was a game the team was predicted to lose and by at least just such a margin.

Meanwhile Wolves are frequently the victims of deliberate tactics by other teams… Teams that throw games, teams that cheat on the pitch… So why not, for once, let Wolves gain from a manager with a brain?

The team’s response after Birmingham has been fantastic with our first two back-to-back victories in the premier league and I never had great expectations for us too win at Tottenham, then Mick was reported in the press in wanting to upset the ‘apple cart again’ for last night’s match. So then he makes the biggest contradiction of his managerial career with 10 changes to play an Utd team with out key defenders and Vidic last about an hour. Yes our first team might of still lost but at what score line? 1 – 0? Would Craddock of handballed like Zubar did? Would Berra done better at defending the Vidic goal? The third one was pure class so it’s losing 3 – 0 to a Man Utd side that didn’t play at their best that has left us back into the relegation zone with huge pressure on the Burnley game come Sunday.

I can see the view of keeping the players fresh but does this really keep our best team from the last two games before last night in the right frame of psychology? I feel sorry for fans who travelled but I am more angry for the way Mick believed our first team couldn’t get anything from Old Trafford, so why play the first team at White Hart Lane? A team that’s been around the top four all of the season so far, if we had some luck we would of won at Everton who went to Chelsea and took a point. Yes I am pursuits football fan and we had side that seemed very eager to take a crack at a current league champions and our manager has denied that opportunity to those players who by all media reports after Saturday had a comfortable day out in North London, yes it was comfortable so what Mick said on sky is a weak excuse.

They are professional footballers Mick they surely can’t be too tired to be rested? Even if they beat Burnley this kind of negative attitude from our manager won’t take us very far, look at Stoke last season picking a point away from Liverpool they also went so close to getting something from Chelsea so why couldn’t our players do the same last night? This was not a great idea for momentum of the team, or some fans may think was, well only time will tell, if we beat Burnley then maybe but this does cause major concern on how Mick thinks about the survival fight, because what is next? Is he going to change the team completely for Liverpool away? Is he going to start this trick at home games?

There are valid points in both sides of the argument but I say, what is the point of promotion if you not going bother with the games like yesterday, Sheffield Utd tried this and didn’t work, west brom likewise still got relegated. The team selection was really against the rules in the premier league handbook paragraph E20 ‘in every league match each participating club shall field a full-strength team’, this I have read in the Times this morning who two journalists argue the two sides of the opinion, one has a quote saying ‘It sends out an ugly message – he lacks faith in his players.’

While the other made the point what difference would it make if it were Kevin Foley and Segundo Castillo rather than Karl Henry and Matt Jarvis ‘chasing shadows in midfield’ well Kevin Doyle would made a difference with Milijas and when Jarvis came on he had the beating of the rookie right back in red. Surman came out the game with some credit with Foley who gave another performance too keep me thinking about whether he could do a better job in midfield than defence. So maybe I’m over reacting then? Well if I paid 42 quid then no it’s not a over reaction, its disrespect again to the great fans that Wolverhampton Wanderers seem to keep on taking for granted, Jez Moxey hasn’t even consider offer something back to us, I’m sorry but he is just a vampire sucking money who for me is no football man, he loves getting on the bandwagon when the good times are rolling but when the time comes for respect back he offers nothing. I like to know what Steve Morgan thinks of this and what do our football legends think?

after all the comment on selection it must be very demoralising for the players who took part in the match to be discribed as second rate they did not pick themselves and tried their best.it was not good enough or was it, to lose 3-0 at OT is not the end of the world when compared with other teams.
I also think that MM made a mistake with so many changes but it is his decision he is the manager and should be backed up at the time as should the team.
I have followed wolves for over 50 years and have seen a lot worse than the present squad as also seen a lot better but living in the past is for fools as what happens now is what counts and if we fail to stay in the premier league then is the time to give the manager a hard time not now.

I travelled up from London on the train (~£80) with my son to see the game (£84) and stayed the night (£91 + £30 eating out) in Manchester. We are both season ticket holders at the Mol. We were at White Hart Lane on Saturday. We’ll do the 225 mile round trip on Sunday for the Burnley match.

I don’t give a monkey’s about what “99% of callers to Talksport” think. We don’t have the luxury of hundreds of millions of pounds that Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City have….they can rotate their players with ease. MM was rotating players to maximise the chances of a victory on Sunday against Burnley.
Our team last night had a better result at Old Trafford last night than the “first team” did at Stamford Bridge or against Arsenal. I’d rather we didn’t have to play the likes of Friend and Hill without the more solid presence of Berra and Craddock, but if it has to be done it has to be done.

Last night, the various chants came towards the end when everything was dying down: the team looked tired (as the “first team” looked tired in the last 15 minutes against Spurs). Initially it was clear that the chants were simply mocking the United fans. After the game, several United supporters suggested to us that we have a “stong squad”.

While both Hill and Friend looked out of their depths (but not much more than Ebanks Blake has looked for much of the season), the side looked fine. Remember that the first goal was from a penalty and Hahneman was very unlucky with the second. Their third goal was sheer class, quite frankly.

I’m disappointed: I took a day and a half off work, and spent more than £250 to see the game. I didn’t see angry faces at the game – even during the “money back” chanting.

But I came away seeing that the ‘back up’ for the main players were capable, had learnt a lot and generally performed well.

If I have any complaint, it’s that Maierhofer is a liability. He seems to have a short fuse and his angry retaliation looked like it was going to land him at least a yellow card. He seemed to spend most of the night rambling around flooring people.

The Premiership is tough and tactics are needed. MM played an admittedly massive risk (not sure I’d have been as supportive had we lost 10-0!) but maybe we’ll have to wait til Sunday evening to judge….

I looked forward to going to places like old trafford when we were promoted and thinking we might come away with a victory.I now think me and my son should have stayed at home why bother playing in the best league against the best teams when you just simply give up before a ball is kicked thanks mick.

Grace – you are wrong to worry about what “neutral” fans think.. Anyway, there’s no such thing. I dislike ALL other football clubs (true – some more than others!) OK I’ve a soft spot for Hartlepool, but that would soon change if they played and beat us in the cup!

McCarthy was incapable of fielding a Wolves team capable of competing with Man utd for 90 (+ how many?)minutes. For that you must blame the way the Premiership works, not
McCarthy. The Premiership is not a league in every respect but name. But to get into Utd’s league we need to stay in the Prem.

It this league was as balanced as the championshuip, I would have been spitting blood at this selection. But it isn’t.

This “League” is as unfair now as it has ever been and only likely to get worse.

Any of you who don’t like this, start campaigining for a worldwide maximum wage and tranfer fee, or start playing golf or something…

Saw the game on TV thank God. If I paid to see the game live i would have been seething.
One good thing is that we had the chance to see the reserve players in action.
The Hoff cant be judged on this game as the service was pretty dire but it does seem that despite his height, he is not good in the air! He didnt win any of the long punts upfield. And the ball seemed to bounce away from his feet everytime he got to touch it. I hope this is not indicative of his general ability.
George Friend is way out of his league. He lost it every time he had the ball. It was quite embarassing to see how incompetant he was.
Surman was very ordinary. Not bad but did nothing of note.
Iwelumo will not make the grade at this level and ran around aimlessly. He may pick up the odd lucky goal if we bombard the opposing goalmouth but that’s not the Wolves style.
However, it was good to see Dave Jones back in action. His class showed through with some great pi-point passes to Jarvis who also played without fear and passed Fletcher numerous times.
