Iwelumo aims for Old Trafford bow
Tuesday 15th December 2009, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo is aiming to make his first appearance at Old Trafford a happy one after insisting Manchester United should not be feared.
The Scotland international is poised for a possible start with boss Mick McCarthy pondering a rest for £6.5million signing Kevin Doyle.
McCarthy said: “We’ve got to enjoy the game tonight and not fear it. The pressure will be on them wanting to bounce back from their defeat and nobody will expect us to win. But we still put pressure on ourselves to perform.
“We have to make sure we get about the pitch and try to get into them when we can.”
Having never played there before, Iwelumo is relishing his first taste of the ‘Theatre of Dreams.’
He said: “It’s a fantastic stage. I haven’t played there before so, if I’m involved, it will be the first time. It’s a tough game but there was a benchmark set on Saturday for all of us.
“There are 30 players in the squad and everyone there was buzzing. We’ve got to make sure that we do the same again next time out. I’ll just be delighted to be involved in any capacity.
“It’s been a really hard six weeks but getting back involved over the last week has been great.”
Iwelumo made his return from a foot injury in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham, playing the last 11 minutes as a replacement for Richard Stearman.
It was that has left the big striker wanting more.
He said: “I was buzzing to be back out there. I was breathing hard and felt my legs afterwards but felt good generally. From my point of view it was just a case of trying to consume some time, give the boys in midfield and at the back a bit of a chance to get their breath back.
“Coming on as a substitute it’s sometimes harder to get into a game, but you just have to do it as quickly as you can and work your socks off and try to be a thorn in their side.
“It was a fantastic result and the boys were superb from start to finish.
“We need more of the same tonight.”
