Tottenham 0 Wolves 1
Saturday 12th December 2009, 5:20PM GMT.
Kevin Doyle’s third minute goal gave Wolves arguably their greatest Premier League victory at Tottenham to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Doyle’s fourth of the season came after the slightest touch to glance home Nenad Milijas’s superb free kick after Tom Huddlestone had fouled captain Karl Henry, while their second away win was also their second clean sheet of the season.
But victory came at a price, as David Edwards suffered suspected ankle ligament damage and had to be taken off.
The midfielder could now be out for up to eight weeks and may even require surgery.
Victory was Wolves’ first at White Hart Lane in 10 visits since October 1973, when Kenny Hibbitt, Geoff Palmer’s first for the club and Barry Powell netted in a 3-1 win.
Goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann wasn’t called upon to make a save until the 82nd minute to spectacularly tip away a flying volley from Huddlestone, then denying the former Wolves loan midfielder with a much more routine stop.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had an effort deflected inches wide in the 86th minute, but Wolves and their noisy sell-out following of 3,000 were forced into an anxious wait to begin the celebrations as six minutes of injury time were played out.
After the goal, Wolves restricted to Spurs in a half of virtually no goalmouth action, as Mick McCarthy’s entire team defended from the front to keep their lead intact without particularly exerting themselves.
Jermain Defoe fired straight at Hahnemann from 25 yards, before a deflected effort from Robbie Keane spun narrowly over.
Former Wolves star Keane also floated a header over, as Spurs tried in vain to break down a resolute visitors’ defence.
The home side went closest to a reply in the 37th minute, when the excellent Christophe Berra took the sting out of Defoe’s effort from six yards.
As expected, the game opened up in the second half and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was first to show when his fierce, angled left-foot drive was smothered by goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes after Doyle put him through.
As Wolves were then disrupted by the loss of Dave Edwards with what appeared to be an injury to his right ankle after the midfielder twisted awkwardly on the turf, the unhappy Keane was hauled off for Peter Crouch.
Edwards then hobbled off to be replaced by Kevin Foley in midfield.
Spurs replied with a spell of their own and it took a great clearing header from Henry to deny Vedran Corluka’s nodded effort on the hour. Seconds later, Sebastien Bassong headed over powerfully from the resulting corner.
Spurs continued to pile forward but Wolves defended superbly, as first Niko Kranjcar mis-kicked in front of goal from Corluka’s cross then substitute Modric fired a foot over.
Chris Iwelumo was introduced as an 80th minute substitute for the tiring Richard Stearman, as the tireless Doyle switched to right midfield.

Get in! It will be a bitter pill for all the moronic mccarthy haters that we have won two in two since the hapless non performance against blues. Who knows maybe they will start to get behind him and what he is doing for our club. Good performance , a great result and what a boost for the squad’s confidence. Maybe all the moaners can concede that maybe we are not doomed after all just yet. Come on me babbies!

The best part of today is that the message boards will be empty of short-sighted, ignorant remarks about sacking the manager. Those idiots must be sitting in front of their computers tonight struggling for anything to do. Well done Mick, Jez and Steve. Hold your nerve, keep going, and ignore the fools.

a very proud moment for all wolves fans especially those that were there fantastic result for the lads thought stephen ward and kevin doyle were excellent and if I can dream for a moment a point on Tuesday would convince all that we could make it in this league

spurs are no good against good teams they can only score against rubbish.

MICK OUT! We win promotion as champions. We hold our own in the prem. We have a disaster against Blues and he turns it around by beating Bolton and Spurs.
Yep, the most intelligent thing to do would be to sack Mick.
What does this man have to do win some fans over. My advice would be to say stuff em Mick. The real fans appreciate the Wolves legend you are!

Great result and all credit to the team for fighting for every ball, but can some one please teach them to pass the ball to each other and not the opposition, nearly every attack that we had to defend was caused by us giving the ball away.

A very welcome result and performance.Perhaps something positive will come out of the rock bottom performance against Birmingham.
Obviously a fantastic result! It was a joy to watch such committed defending from everyone in the team. The report says ‘without particularly exerting themselves’- what I saw was constant exertion, and that was what made the difference against a team full of formidable attackers. And we still made chances too.
I wonder what the moaners will come up with this time – yes we weren’t perfect and gave the ball away too often, but even if we’d only got a draw it would have been a good result, so they can’t even say we were lucky!

Suddenly we have learned how to defend, or Spurs where rubbish. Which was it?

Great character and commitment, Ward and Berra were terrific and Milijas is proving to be the player we all know he is. We must make it 3 out of 3 against Burnley. My one criticism is that for a lot ofthe game we looked like a lower league side in an FA cup tie, unable to get hold of the ball and when we did we gave it straight back. Doyle’s hold up play was nothing short of heroic!

What a fantastic result and a defiant defensive display from the lads, to go to a team that are potentially top four and win just proves that we can survive and compete in this league, lets hope we do manage to survive and im sure if we can play like that every week and add some more fire power to the team then we will be alright! up the wolves

We showed great grit throughout the game. Back four looked the sharpest they have been all season. Ward’s a revelation!

I’m sure all us Wolves fans will agree when I say WHAT A FANTASTIC RESULT!!! Before anyone starts with the negative he should have done this and he didn’t do that can we please just bask in the glory of 3 much needed, unexpected, but very welcome points and save the detailed analysis for later, thanks.
I amongst others was our biggest critic after the Blues game and I’m ashamed to say had all but resigned myself to a short stay in the Prem. Now however after 6 points from 2 yes 2 consecutive games I am obviously delighted but more importantly, this great bunch of Wolves players have restored my dwindling faith of staying up now. We have a long way to go I know but we are improving all the time in my opinion.
Spurs are no pushovers ask any Wigan fan but we held our own superbly against a side with so much more quality than us it has to be said. How was this possible? Simple, we never gave up and showed too much passion and fight against a Spurs side which I believe thought that just turning up would be enough given our record against them at their place.
Let’s hope a few more of the better teams do this, we are not the poor side that many would say we are.
At my work there is a weekly prediction sweep for the Prem. (which I don’t bother with as I never bet on the Wolves a little superstition of mine). Some of the scores predicted were 6-1 4-0 3-1 5-0 and one person put us down for a 2-1 win, well done that man!
It’s a long hard season but these kinds of performances will keep us up.
I watched online and can I just say the fans who went did us proud KEEP IT UP!
I know Man U are a different prospect but who knows? No-one gave us a chance against Spurs but we have beaten them with a well taken set piece goal by both Milijas and Doyle (thanks lads just brilliant. Coupled with never say die defending from the WHOLE TEAM and we get what we deserve.
Hennessey will have to be amazing to get back in the side as Hahnemann is proving me so wrong about his ability to play in this league I am so happy to say and long may it continue!
The Faith Is Back and will stay till the end of the season now!!!

I’ve supported Wolves for nearly 50 years and rarely been as proud as I was at 5pm this evening. We were bound to struggle in the premiership – take a look at history – but Mick McCarthy is the man to keep us there and take us higher in time. All those who criticise must have very short memories of some of the managers over the last 25 years – only Graham Turner, Dave Jones and Mick are worthy of a mention. Congratulations Mick and Thank You.

Wanted to comment earlier but the old laptop has given up the ghost. Had a good feeling about this one, again couldn/t watch it as not on ESPN here in Brazil but what a result!!
I have said on other occasions its up to the players on the pitch and the performance they put in, the manager can only watch either in horror, dismay, anxiety and wonder at what his players accomplish on the day. A good gutsy dedicated want to play in this shirt and for this club performance, keep it up and now start to believe in yourselves, you are as good as any other team in the Prem. I have a funny feeling about Man U aswell!!!!!!!!!!!.

What a wonderful second weekend in a row for all Wolves fans around the world. It doesn’t matter that Spurs put nine past Wigan in a Disneyworld match as Mick described it. I always go by the saying ‘every match has its story’ and this was no exception.
If one saw the odds for the match they were largely astronomical but Wolves proved everyone wrong and together with Villa and City from the Midlands they were the ones who only won yesterday.
Another massive match on Tuesday against United but if the boys play with the same grit and determination nothing is impossible to achieve.
Well done Mick and your Gold and Black boys.

Great back to back wins, down to players who have really lifted in recent weeks, Milijas, Ward, Craddock, Edwards, and reserve keeper, Hannaman, has played very well.
While Spurs players were unable to break through the strong defence of Wolves, their team really lifted with the introduction of Crouch, who in the last twenty minutes was a real danger to Wolves. His height and heading ability, and being the second tallest player in the Premiership, could well have been a match winner for spurs.
Why not give our giant a fair go, the Hough is an International like crouch, and no one knows his full potential so far.
While Sylvan played a little better, I am still not convinced that he is up to the Premiership, good to see big Chris return for a short period, he too is questionable for
this grade Football
This game was won by an early goal, and by flooding our defence which we did very well yesterday, however, we will be unable to pull this one every week and need to address our forward line, and with our present players, and with keogh sidelined, pray god that we look to picking up a couple of players in January.
We have a number of good players, the team has more than their share of real guts, we have some of the best supporters around, and with a couple of additions, there is no way we will be relegated as predicted by many on this site.

Fantastic result yesterday what a shame we always seem to play teams at the wrong time though (Man U.). Man U. are certainly not the attacking force they were last season and I think we will lose this one. This makes the Burnley game an absolute must win not only for ourselves but its time they were dragged down into the mire after their good start.
Experienced Prem. quality reinforcements are vital in Jan. (look what Bowyer is doing at the Blues) with the addition of Joe Ledley.
Lets take nothing away from our effort yesterday though but we are going to need a few more of those if we are to achieve our goal of 17th spot or higher.

Fantastic result. Solid defence, Ward took care of lennon superbly. Midfield restricted their midfield to just lumping the ball into the box and berra and craddock won everything – even when they brought crouchy on. SEB and Doyle held the ball up fantastically. Norway Wolf, you’ve clearly been bathing in the fjords too long, your brain is snap frozen or are you scoffing pies in some WBA stronghold.
Get a grip fella!
Yep Mick is dragging us down to the level of two consecutive wins and the last at the home ground of a genuine championship contender. How bloody dare he?
Any Wolves fan out there who thought that this year was going to be a season of GLORY really has not had a grip on reality. This season is about and has always been about SURVIVAL and hopefully next year about CONSOLIDATION.
This really is a win for the ages and our team should be rightly hailed.
With this sort of commitment we will stay up and MM is the man to lead us.
All of you morons out there who keep bringing up his premiership record need to remember he was abandondoned by his board and given stuff all to work with, so get back on your anti- depressants and get behind our magnificent club!

Great win.
My gripe with Mc Carthy is that he prefers hard working payers over quality every time. In truth you have to have a bit of both, especially when it comes to midfield. For most of the season we have left the only real midfield quality on the bench (Milijas). Milijas has created goals every time he has played and will get a regular starting berth now (we hope) but the season started in August, not in December, so is Mc Carthy really that clever?

Beating Spurs was something very special but does not make up for the losses with Blues and portsmouth. So we need to stay grounded but three points against Burnley would go down a real Xmas treat.

Well done to Wolves, you deserved it,however, we lacked a forward line who could give the defence time to breath, only Doyle could hold the ball and give the defence breathing space, will he burn out? Doyle was my man of the match. Is Blake good enogh at this level. He had two good chances in the game but he lacked pace to complete the move and suprisingly he is shuffled off the ball very easily, even Keogh does not get moved off the ball that easily.
Do not forget, any defender can look good when the ball is continually coming at you. Jarvis had the pace and skill but he lacked support and was not as effective as he should be, is he being sacrificed to shore up the defence?

We know that instead of just enjoying it, some will still come on here with provocative comments. Some days ago I dared to suggest that, just like in the F.A. Cup, you will get surprise results so why shouldn’t we get something out of our two awesome away games? If I’d suggested two points from the Spurs/United games I would have been pilloried. Well we’ve got three so far. Hey, enjoy the moment. Plenty more ups and downs yet!

What a win. Great effort and committment from the team.
Makes the Birmingham performance all the more puzzling.
Keep it up lads.

What a great result. Had to watch the game on line and the feed kept going out during extra time. Talk about edge of the seat action! Well done to MM and the boys. Wolves fans around the world salute you.

What a result yesterday!
I was fortunate enough to be able to go yesterday at the expense of my old man who wasn’t well and from front to back, left to right, Supporters to management we were absolutely brilliant!
The supporters were loud and raucous, the players gave 150% from first whistle to the point where Hahnemann came to the crowd after the final whistle and Mick got EVERYTHING right.
Stephen Ward…There are no descriptors to explain how solid and consistent he was yesterday. Kevin Doyle may well be the best 6.5 million ever spent by Wolves, Craddock and Berra were IMMENSE, Henry was EVERYWHERE. This is the kind of performance that will guarentee us wins against the “lesser” teams and will mean we won’t get “Spanked” by the bigger teams!
Bring on Tuesday…Although I am quiet concerned about how poor United looked against villa yesterday.
My other concern is that he’ll bring Halford back in for Edwards. Personally, i would play Jarvo on the right and Surman on the left.
See you all at Old Trafford :-)

Great result for us yesterday, well done lads, as for all the short sighted idiots who cant see whats happening at the wolves the fans that chant “Super Mick” please…. all of our so called idiot fans are the fans that are chanting his name, 4nil down to arsenal and u sing his name, funny you didnt at the blues game forgetful arnt we, actualy you booed, so who are the real fans at the club, the pocket of fans that can see mick is not tackticaly good enough are the real fans who can watch and read football for what it is. At the end of the day we all want the best for our club and that is atleast 15mil in jan, will we get it? simply the answer is a big No, Morgan is taking all us for a ride at our expence, the only thing we will buy will be the good fizzy pop players and that is not ambition? !!!

Loved it !!! Spurs fans were going onto the Sky Sports commentary – saying we’re gonna win 6-1, 4-0, 3-0 etc etc !! How sweet ;-) Also shuts up eejets like Adrian Durham on Talk Sport. I mailed and asked him for the winning lottery numbers as he knows everything. He knows Wolves are definately going down – and ever since the words came out of his mouth – we have won every time !! Cheers Adrian – keep spouting your rubbish !! Mail him everyone ;-) Up The Wolves !!

This is what happens when fans support their team, fans were amazing and the team worked so hard. A clean sheet at white hart lane is quite an acievement. The so called ‘happy clappers’ are being rewarded at the moment, the muppets who want to sack MM are being kept quiet! love it!

I was at white hart lane. The team and our fans were magnificent. We deserved the three points…but I agree with 67,I dont think SEB can do it in the Prem. It’s a shame because we all love him for the goals he scored to help get us out of the Championship, but I think many fans will recgnise that KD,who really is Prem striker, would have a lot more success if he had another attacker along side him that defences feared. If we were more forceful and troublesome up-front I think our existing players in midfield and defence would find more time to control and dictate games, rather than having to do so much sweating and scrapping as the do at present.Relegation? No…not if we continue to play with the heart we showed on Saturday and if we can find a ‘January striker’to partner KD.
they say you need 10 wins to stay up. if we beat burnley then thats 5 half way through the season so it is definitely in our hands to produce these sorts of results to stay up. then in january we can get in thatextra bit of quality. Anton ferdinand, Danny Murphy, reo coker are all struggling at their clubs so they might be worth a go
Report abuse
Well done lads, out the bottom three let’s hope we can keep it up, a few more points before xmas would be nice keep us out the drop zone, hopefully some reinforcements coming Jan.
Dont you wish you had started playing Miljas regular sooner Mick.
You can stay up Wolves, keep it going.
Realistically, even the win against Spurs does not hide the fact that we have failed to collect the right number of points from the ‘easier’ games we have played at home this season and we are now playing catch up. I think we can stay up but 4th bottom is a slightly false position. We will need one other big surprise result to get right back in the frame. Wins against Man City and Liverpool are both possible, but we do not carry enough attacking threat to take a point from Man Utd (Well done Villa!!)
Remember that Burnley have beaten Man Utd this season and they have had also home wins against Hull, Birmingham, Sunderland, and Everton. Our record leaves us in poor shape – home losses to Portsmouth and West Ham, and a draw against Hull. If we are expecting those sides to finish below us then it looks like we have already shot ourselves in both feet. Burnley have not played any of those teams at home yet. We can not afford to slip up at home. Draws will NOT be enough for us.

Kiddy Wolf, i think you need to grow up mate, every one must have been concerned until the last 2 games. Hopefully we can get the right result next weekend and push up the table in the new year.
Just because people don’t agree with you, it doesn’t make them any a lesser supporter

Pressed all over the pitch for 96 minutes. Charged down shots, Jarvis always got back to help out with Lennon. Never committed too many people when we broke forward. Craddock got stuck into crouch and never let him get an easy header etc etc This was the polar opposite of the Birmingham game. This is now the bench mark performance for the rest of the season. Well done Mick and the team.

SEB started slowly, looked lacking in confidence which you would if you’d bagged only a peno in the prem. he gave the ball away poor first touch, but having said that it doesn’t make him incapable of playing and succeeding at this level. In the later stages of the game as the urgency became more acute he responded well and got some good touches, help up well and laid off well, so the team are getting there and SEB will too. I can’t see a victory at MU, but i hope he gets one there, just to keep him on his way.

Bob Wolf has spent all weekend trying to think of something negative to say about yesterday but can’t think of anything. Finally some round pegs in round holes from Mick with Milijas given a run in the team and Ward (yes Ward) back in and playing very well at left back – although that said Jarvis didn’t move more than 2 yards away from Ward all game to counter the threat of Lennon.
Excellent throughout and even Berra looked very composed against Defoe, Craddock dealt with Crouch extremely well and Ebanks looked more lively and was unlucky not to score.
Expecting to lose on Tuesday but another huge game next Sunday that we need to win.

Hey, QuébecWolf, don’t worry about SEB. No goals from open play yet, but every report I read seems to have him stinging the ‘keeper’s hands at some point. He will bust oout soon with a couple. Tuesday would be a great time to start……

Fantastic result. Great performance, 96 mins hard work all paid off. Now we have to make sure it counts by beating Burnley next week or it will mean nothing.
We now need everyone to just GET BEHIND THE LADS 150%. They’re putting the work in…..its our turn now.
The faithful that went to White Hart Lane, did us proud, you were all we could hear for 96 mins.
On the basis that anything on Tuesday is just a bonus……NEXT SUNDAY IS MASSIVE!!!!!!! Lets all stop moaning about MM (I do think he’s the right guy for us) and for once lets get 28000 behind the lads…..they deserve it.
Forever Wolves!!!

Congratulations to all at Molyneux for the last two results especially at Tottenham! Makes a big difference to the back four having a safe, competent keeper behind them and nice to have quality at leftback too plus 110% effort everywhere else. There is still room for improvement as well so there should be no looking back from now on!

What a cracking result…….how frustrating to be a Wolves Fan. Pompey & West Ham below us & we lost to them at home…look where we would be now if we had taken the 6 points from them on our own stomping ground, what if we had beaten Hull & Everton…the thought is mouth watering. Well boys you have set the bar now, so performances are required week in week out. No more excuses, if you put the performance in & lose we can forgive you all, but no performance & a loss you will all get slated by the fans. Lets hope Man Utd are in hangover mode from Villa when we face them on Tuesday.
Bad luck Andy Keogh, I think you are still a potential star in the making. Recover well my Irish Friend…hope we have you, KD & RK in our forward line for the new year. Good luck for the next two games boys…

Superb result and,I must admit, one that surprised me. It was a case of round pegs in round holes and the early goal gave us something to cling to and to organise ourselves around. Mick got it ‘spot on’ tactically and Jarvis and Ward together helped to strangle the space around Lennon, thus cutting off their best supply route to goal. I thought Henry was fantastic in midfield whilst SEB and Doyle worked their socks off up front. Credit to Berra and Craddock, also, who I thought may struggle against the pace and movement of Keano and Defoe. The only ‘downside’ was the injury to Edwards – looked a bad one – and this may disturb the balance of the side now.
We’re back at a point-per-game now and, although I expect a beating tomorrow,a win v Burnley is now vital to build on this and put us ahead of target.

This is what supporting Wolves is all about. I have had the pleasure of witnessing 1-0 wins at Anfield and now White Hart Lane and was at Bolton for the Chorley debacle. Now let’s stop this McCarthey out nonsense.
The team defended superbly. Ward is getting better and better and Doyle is top drawer. Can we hope for a point at Old Trafford?
Must win against Burnley and I reckon a point a game – which we are now on – is enough for safety!

That completed a great weekend for me. We generally looked rock solid and didn’t allow their front men much more than a little sniff. Milijas and the back four really shone. Just superb!! Well chuffed.

Didn’t get there Saturday but from what I saw we looked confident and solid.
Would invite views on why the Hough is not playing and he is persisting in SEB.
Perhaps he feels when he does score the flood gates will open. Not sure myself as I think he always wants the extra touch which isn’t available at this level
Must say though it seems he was unlucky not to score with a couple of good strikes. looked like a different player than against Blues
We did pay £2.5m for Hough and I would like to see what he can do. Anyone else?
Perhaps he is taking time to settle in to the game here.
Well done the boys and Mick lets at least get 3 points from the next couple of games and Christmas will have come early

A great win on Saturday and still the village idiots come on moaning- ah well can’t epect to much eh.

No doubt about it – an excellent win and three points against a talented Spurs team. The early goal threw Spurs of their stride and the team defensive performance was excellent.
Milijas need to stay in the starting lineup and, hopefully, remains healthy. Doyle is clearly our best striker but, as the commentator commented, Ebanks-Blake looked a sorry player at this level. With Keogh out, we must invest in another quality striker to help Doyle.
COME ON YOU WOLVES – lets get something out of Man U and get three points against Burnley.

Great to see us win against my local team for the first time in 36 years at the Lane. I still remember a 7-4 loss back in the 60s, and what a game that was. I have had the greatest doubts about Mick’s tactical acumen, but credit where it is due. His tactics were spot on and he got the whole team playing for him. A brilliant performance all-round in the circumstances. Unfortunately, the circumstances of an early goal will not always occur, but with this degree of fight, and a bit more class going forward, we can stay up.

Re No. 137 Crouch End
I well remamber being at the 7-4 defeat at the Lane. I was living at Stoke Newington at the time. In those days (or since) we rarely got much change from a visit to Spurs.
So Saturdays result was very very special
Well done to all the team.

Fantastic result, I live in london and nice to see spurs fans i work with subdued.I managed to watch the whole game yesterday, and it was a typical MM team performance, score a good goal, close down in midfield, stop the crosses comin in. But the way we defended was exceptional, we managed to make a fantastic spurs attack look ordinary, and they only had a few chances in the end. The success of this team remains on the shoulders of doyle, miljas and Craddock. When they all play well were in with a chance.I’m not a hater just a realist and after one great result dont want some people on here to get carried away. Our Team has serious weaknesses, particularly in midfield as only miljas looks comfortable on the ball, can hold it up and passes the ball forward.Henry and Edwards are limited at this level i’m afraid. The other players tended to huff it forward to noone and give possession away easily, This is championship football. Upfront SEB worked hard but still looks ineffective. He had a great chance to score when he raced clear but it was a poor finish. On another day one nil will not be enough, spurs had a couple of changes to equalise and if they take one the whole game would have changed.
