Keogh out for three months

Friday 11th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

WIGAN V WOLVES 22 GD 18Wolves today suffered another long-term injury blow when forward Andy Keogh was ruled out for three months.

The Republic of Ireland international suffered damage to a ligament and tendon in his ankle in training yesterday and is set to undergo surgery.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “Very sadly, Andy has damaged his ankle ligaments and tendon and has to have an operation. He will be out for 12 weeks.

“It’s a huge blow, because he is a great kid and he was so devastated when he got the news after he did it yesterday. He was running through on goal and got clipped as he landed.

“He scored a goal jumping over Wayne Hennessey and just rocked his ankle.”

Keogh becomes the third Wolves player in the last 10 days to suffer a long-term injury, after winger Michael Kightly was ruled out for two months with an ankle problem, while goalkeeper Matt Murray will be sidelined for several more months with his damaged right knee.

But the grim bulletin on Keogh is at least tempered by the return to fitness of Chris Iwelumo.

McCarthy confirmed: “Big Chris is back in the squad.”

Keogh was arguably Wolves’ best player in pre-season and had a superb first month in the Premier League, with the winner at Wigan the highlight of his encouraging early performances.

In the short term, Wolves will also be without defender Ronald Zubar again for tomorrow’s trip to Tottenham after suffering a minor ankle injury in training following his recent thigh strain that has kept him out of the last three games.

Injuries aside, McCarthy admitted his positive approach for the recent defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea must be tempered slightly for tomorrow’s trip to White Hart Lane, as Wolves look to build on Saturday’s 2-1 win against Bolton.

The Wolves boss said: “We know what to expect and what can happen if you are not at it, that’s for sure. We will have a go tomorrow, but we might have to temper our performance with a bit more caution.”

When I read sometime ago that Wolves players train the same as if they were playing a live match with 100% committed tackles I wondered about the wisdom of this .We now need an injection of quality players in the Jan window to avoid relegation AND I DONT MEAN CHAMPIONSHIP OR DIVISION1 PLAYERS JEZ.

The lad should never have been dropped, a typical MM tactic. Drop somebody whos playing at the top of their game. I’ve been saying for weeks that he should be playing on the right instead of bloody Halford who is a complete waste of space. Now hes crocked. Typical.

How can people moan about the training!

Read what happened, he jumped over henessey going through 1 on 1, scored and obviously went to jump over him (so they didn’t collide) and landed funny.

    This isn’t dodgy training.

My god, you can see any under 10′s team doing this kind of training down your local park, practising 1 on 1′s is what every striker needs to do.

Some people just amaze me on these boards!

Contrary to the praise that MM has given SEB this week, Keogh must have been close to a recall. He may not be the most confident in front of goal but he has vision, is unselfish and works hard.
I am off to Spurs tomorrow and we must exploit their weaknesses – goalkeeper and defence – and watch out for their threats apart from the obvious – Defoe, Crouch and Keane. We must double up on Lennon and close down Huddlestone and then every man must play to their optimum.
    There is a chance of a 1-1!

As i am unable to comment on the next article re: ‘Stick with Mick urges Spurs’ Keane’, i am commenting on this page.

I never comment but feel compelled to due to the provocative nature of the story.

Firstly, i fail to agree with any wolves fan who would want to see McCarthy sacked, and if they did they would surely be in a minority and could barely be described as the ‘masses’. It is a ridiculous and unfounded judgement, made by the journalist and merely serves to cause more instability in the club and ill feeling between team and fans.

Listen- we are all heading in the same direction (hopefully out of the relegation zone), and we are doing it with mick at the helm. I hope no-one, particularly Mick, takes any notice of this trash

This is a blow because fact he and Doyle have been BY FAR the best working partnership up front in the premiership for us. He may not score many goals( although he has scored the same as SEB and from open play and the hoff)but its what he does off the ball for the other striker .

I am absolutely shocked and disgusted at some of the hurtful and pathetic comments towards one of our OWN INJURED players!!??!

You idiots who deride one of your own players have no right to call yourselves Wolves fans.
You are not worthy of such a claim to this great club. Fans like you are nothing short of scum with comments like that and should stay away from the Mol. as you are definitely not welcome to support our club.

As someone else said above I REALLY hope none of you suffer such a heartbreaking occurence. No doubt you would expect all the sympathy you could get wouldn’t you?

Before you think about having a go back about my comments I would take a LONG look at yourselves first if I was you. An opinion is one thing but down right disrespect to one of our own players is totally another, find another club to support you don’t deserve this one!

Andy Keogh may not score regularly BUT he gives defenders such a torrid time with his off the ball runs, clever passes and he NEVER gives up running for the ball.

Get back soon Andy the REAL Wolves fans wish you a speedy recovery.
