Price freeze on bus fares
Friday 11th December 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
Bus passengers were today promised there will be no rise in fares for 2010.
National Express West Midlands, which runs 80 per cent of services in the region, said the decision was taken to help people get to work and interviews.
The pledge comes after fares went up by 10 per cent, more than twice the rate of inflation, in January 2009.
Single fares rose from £1.50 to £1.70 and the move sparked anger from passengers who signed on-line petitions.
Neil Barker, director of National Express bus and coach, said: “We have taken the decision to hold our current prices into 2010 to help customers feeling the pinch of the recession and to encourage more car users to try public transport.”
Current ticket prices include £3.30 for a daysaver, £12.50 for a weekly travel card and £38 for a monthly direct debit travel card.
National Express West Midlands has 500 bus services each year and runs the Midland Metro. It said no decision had yet been made about any fare changes for the Metro.

All I will say is that it is a good job that they aren’t going to increase the prices with such a shoddy service given. I catch the 333 bus to and from work each day unfortunately this service never runs on time and on many occasions not even turning up. As this service only runs every 30 mins this is a pain especially when no explanations are given.

I am a driver and did use a bus until last October. The cost of bus fares here in the Midlands compared to home in Cheshire is much higher. If they offered a return ticket that was cheap and singles that werent so astronomical people would use there services. I begrudge paying £1.70 to go 2 stops up the road and £3.30 for a day saver if I am only making a return journey. In cheshire they still charge per stop and return tickets are available aswell as the daytripper. Admitted that the daytripper in Cheshire is more expensive than here but there region is bigger.

Currently, the price of daysaver is £3.30 which costs the same as London’s bus daysaver. However, London’s one has got more value of money.
London’s daysaver is valid on all bus operators’ services but in West Midlands, Diamond Bus has a 50p extra charge for NXWM’s daysavers and NXWM doesn’t accept other operators’ tickets either. London’s got larger area served by buses and has got much more number of services. Comparing the general price level as well as the income level of London and the West Midlands, how far the difference is? but we’re having the same price of bus daysaver!
I know the ‘on-line petition’ mentioned in the article is for Facebook users only but I don’t use Facebook. My fellow passengers could you please launch petitions outside Facebook next time to let MORE people, internet users or non-internet-users, to voice their objection to high bus fare. We need to have more actions to fight for cheaper and more reasonable bus fare and better services. Facebook is not enough!

NXWM are freezing bus fares, which i agree is a good idea. However NX are currently trying to ‘save money’ by making cut backs and making people redundant, myself included.
NX desperately need to re-think their finances considering they are millions of pound in debt.
If they cut the amount of managers they have within the company and their big pay checks, i’m sure they’d be able to afford to reduce fares slightly!

about time they were reduced never mind frozen.

Ok people, how about they make bus travel free for everyone. Ban all other vehicles from the roads and take down all traffic lights so the buses run on time. Lets have a maximum of 10 people to each bus so you can sit wherever you want. Each bus should be followed by 4 other buses in case you didnt like the available seating/colour/shape of the first bus.
Is that better? NO? (thought not)

I am pleased that they have taken the steps to freeze the prices for 2010 as £2 type of price would be too expensive and it will help aid people getting to and from work (myself included).
My only gripe is with the actual service I have to set out an hour and half earlier than I would normally as they bus service cannot be relied on and many times throughout the years they have been extremely late or as others said just haven’t turned up. Now that NX have resolved the ticket prices can they now start looking at the actual service? If they got that part right as well a lot more people would be willing to use the company
