Carson could be punished by club
Wednesday 9th December 2009, 11:05AM GMT.
Albion captain Scott Carson is waiting to learn if he will be punished by the club for his headbutt shame against Cardiff.
The goalkeeper could face a big club fine if head coach Roberto Di Matteo is handed evidence showing his attack on Bluebirds striker Michael Chopra last night.
Carson’s late red card completed a miserable night for the Baggies, who were beaten 2-0 and lost midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu to a potentially nasty knee injury.
The skipper was sent off with seven minutes remaining, following a clash that was missed by much of the crowd and all the TV cameras at the Hawthorns with play developing 40 yards away.
But referee Paul Taylor’s report could provide evidence for head coach Roberto Di Matteo, who also admitted his attention was elsewhere when the two clashed.
Spectators who did see the incident said Carson thrust his head at Chopra following an exchange of words, after the striker slid in late as the keeper tried to claim a cross.
Carson, who faces a three-match ban, turned down a post-match interview request and Di Matteo said: “I did not see what happened because the game was developing in the middle of the pitch.
“I need to see what happened before I have a conversation with him. It’s too early to decide about discipline. We need to find out exactly what happened.
“Hypothetically we would take action if someone has deliberately head-butted someone. But I don’t know if Chopra said something to him for him to react.
“I will have to have a word with Scott and I’m sure he will apologise.”
Albion are now checking on the fitness of midfielder Mulumbu, who limped off before half-time in a change that was partly tactical but partly down to a knee problem.
It means the Baggies could have eight players missing when they face QPR next Monday.
Long-term absentees Neil Clement, James Morrison and Ishmael Miller are joined by the suspended Carson and injured Robert Koren (hernia), Jerome Thomas (hamstring), Luke Moore (thigh) and now Mulumbu.

Minimal contact from Carson, but it was a stupid thing to do nevertheless. Keily will haowever provide great cover and this is where the depth of the squad will start to tell (hopefully!). Not too worried about QPR, but I think we may struggle against Blackpool away. They are flying at the moment.

I saw it clearly and Carson was having a go at Chopra for following through on him, Chopra said something back and thrust his head towards Carson and then Carson did the same and made contact! Then the theatricals started, they were both at fault and if the ref and linesman didnt see it i dont understand how they could send him off! But at the end of the day Carson should know better to not get invloved!

Yeah same here Tim….i watched it happen, but thought that Carson nutted him as they got face to face.
Just frustation me thinks…with our glorious fans on his back every kick and every save he has to make.
Some of our fans are real to55pots tbh.I suppose those sort can do better?
As for Keily..well..say no more…

If he was gonna get sent off for that he should of made a complete mess off Chopra and made it worth while

Not the actions of a “captain” especially if the club have designs on going up to the Prem.IF he is guilty, then he should be stripped of the armband, give it to Jonas, who should have got it in the first place.Anyway, onwards and hopefully upwards, but it isn’t going to be as easy as a lot of people might think. Its a strong league, with a few clubs just waiting for the top 2-3 to slip up.If Coventry can do the honours to-night,then all may be forgiven for an awfull result last night.

In fairness the ball was there to be won by Chopra and watching it back he did not take his eyes off the ball. Carson said something first and Cjopra reacted and then Carson headbutted him. Carson is a weak-link in our side anyway so I am not bothered about him being suspended but I still don’t undertsna dhwy he is the Captain anyway? Monday will be a difficult game, only 20k last night with Cardiff selling their allocation, a few problems to overcome at the moment.

Ok so he will fined – no problem there,, and he will serve a ban, again no problem (particularly with Deanno to step in)…. and then its over.
I think Carson is a decent lad, he has no history of behaving like this and may have been goaded into reacting like he did (no excuse).
Once the ban is done I will welcome him back.

ian h what depth of squad

He should be ashamed of himself. Have a shave aswell yer scruffy git. We were well beaten anyway and should have changed Carson early on for an outfield player and had a good go as it was well rubbish.

i agree with tim i was sat in the smethwick end and i watched it develop. Carson had a moan at Chopra for diving in on him and Chopra started arguing then he thrust his head toward Carson who met him half way. Chopra being the well known ‘controversial’ player that he is then dived to the ground getting Carson sent off.

I agree with tim above. Carson was complaining about the late slide then Chopra confronted him and the players heads clashed in the middle. Call me biased as i am an Albion fan and i was sat in the smethwick end but if anything Chopra thrusted his head in first only Carson didnt roll around on the floor after resulting in his red card.

Chopra had run round all night kicking people and followed through on Carson, i had a clear view and it was Chopra who thrust forward and then thought it would be good idea to go down and if they have good tv evidence it should get rescinded. If the ref and linesman had done their job then we would have been awarded a free kick for the foul on Carson. How can you give a decision you dont even see?

I’ve just read the ‘Match Analysis.’ Did Laughing Wolf write it?

Didn’t see the incident so can’t comment, but I did see Olsson taking ‘revenge’ which was stupid under the circumstances. I thought the Ref was a useless clown in any case and wasn’t surprised when it all kicked off.

Not the behaviour we want from our “captain”,even if he might have been provoked. If WBA want to make it into the Prem.then we need to behave in the right manner. There are several teams waiting to make a move on the promotion scene.IF Carson is guilty of the said offence, then he should loose the Captaincy, give it to Olsson, who should have got it in the first place.

to be honest even if carson didnt make any contact the intent was there so he got what he deserved
it was a below par performance all round i think the team were still suffering after saturdays late drama
lets hope they can move on and put it right on monday night

I think one or two people have mentioned it but can it just be a coincidence that we perform so poorly in night games compared to Saturday games. It would be interesting to compare our results over the two. This has been the case for a few seasons now. Could it be down to the preparation or does anybody else have any ideas, serious or funny? Answers on a postcard please.

18. The foul is brought back to the place where the incident took place. Deano come off his line too but as the re-bound went in the ref didnt make him re-take it. Lets forget about the ref the best side in all areas of the pitch won.
I think we need to keep Koren as he is the best central midfielder at the club. Play him alongside Jara or Mulumbu and sell Dorrans if he is eyeing the exit door. Meite is not good enough, Brunt is far too inconsistent, Carson is not good enough, Mattock is too slow and not strong enough in the tackle, Zuiv is ok we are on top but not good when we have pressure, Bednar (except the Sheff Utd game) has been poor since his whole fiasco. The Morrsion situation is a joke and the club have said nothing regarding his ‘blister’ he handed in a transfer request at the end of last season and my guess is that he is trying to conjure up a move then when he regains full-fitness which will no doubt be during the January transfer window he will leave. Lets hope that more than 20k are there this Monday.

20 – everytime you post at least 5 genuine albion fans show you up as a dingle in disguise…. why do you bother to keep coming back ??
Are you hoping an albion fan new to the boards will read your rubbish and get depressed or are you just so deperate for attention that even ridicule is welcomed ??
I understand that by addressing you I am fueling your bizzare addiction but PLEASE… for your own sake…. go away !!!!

21 Happy.
Is it a coincidence that on every article on here, Shropshire Baggie works in that we should sell Dorrans because he is ‘eying the exit door’ and on every article on the Wolves site Laughing Wolf suggests that they should ‘take dorrans off our hands as he’s looking for a move in January.’
Could it be possible that he really imagines that JP and Jez Moxey read these boards?

On the story here. I don’t think any punishment the club could give him would be any worse than the way he’s feeling himself. He seems a decent down to earth bloke and although I don’t think it’s great having a keeper as captain, I think RDM gave him the captaincy because he cares about the club. Remember, he’s a big name and he didn’t start talking about a move when we went down. I’d keep him as captain, he will have learnt from this and I hope the fans continue to show their support when he comes back.

TRBH – gotta be a coincidence…. only a mug would peddle rubbish like that, although I’m sure GD would be pleased to have LW in his fan club.

Don’t undertsand how it was a penalty as the ball was at the half way line?
It was poor display any way, but Deanno will be ok between the sticks

I dont think for a second he will be punished. They trust in Carson even if the fans dont. Everyone knows havin a goalkeeper as captain is not ideal. Just what effect can they have from that position??
Let alone havin a keeper that is has never been the most vocal and sometimes has a lack of confidence.
And now this ridiculous sending off… Carson should have left that kind of behaviour to the fans.
I knew with all that fuss about the away ticket allocation down to the Cardiff-West Midlands history and the fact it was a mid-week game that we would probably loose. Their was something in the air. Our run was bound to come to an end.
But I dont think he will be punished, and yes he should be given a 2nd chance. I have said he hasn’t done a bad job for us so far…
But maybe this is a sign we should re-consider the captaincy
