Carew a vital part of Villa plans

Wednesday 9th December 2009, 11:01AM GMT.

SOCCER Villa 5Villa boss Martin O’Neill has reiterated John Carew remains a “very important” part of his plans after dismissing speculation linking him with Fenerbahce.

A morning tabloid claimed yesterday that the Turkish giants were keen to prise Carew away from Villa Park in January. But both O’Neill and Carew’s agent Per A Flod have rubbished the report.

The manager said: “I’ve no idea about that at all, absolutely not. There’s nothing in it. I’m sure that won’t be the only link to one of our players this season. I’ve not even bothered to chase it up.”

Flod added: “Something will happen during the summer of 2010, either an extension or a transfer. John might also play out his contract, but I don’t think Villa are interested in that.

“It’s no news that Fenerbahce want John, that has been known for three years now. Soon, the rumours about Panathinaikos will reappear too!”

O’Neill declared Carew, who has scored four goals this term, remains in his thinking.

The Villa boss added: “Very much so. We’re at a really important stage and John is very important.  I would be pretty loathe to be losing players.

“John has been an integral part of the side, he’s done very well and I want a bit of genuine competition for places, which I think I have at the moment. ”
