Derby 2 West Brom 2

Saturday 5th December 2009, 6:07PM GMT.

DJ Campbell rescued a point deep into stoppage time for Derby after Graham Dorrans looked to have handed Albion a dramatic late victory, writes Steve Madeley.

Dorrans drilled home a shot in the 93rd minutes and appeared to have handed the Baggies an unlikely win, only for Campbell to give the game another twist when he headed home Lee Hendrie’s cross.

Another goal from the red-hot Simon Cox drew the visitors level in a high-octane battle at Pride Park before Dorrans and Campbell weighed in at the death.

Cox scored his fifth goal in as many matches with eight minutes to go after Paul Dickov’s goal late in the put the Rams ahead.

The first half was contested at a high tempo with Albion producing the more incisive football but Derby having their moments too.

Scott Carson had to make an unusual clearance with his feet after spilling a Jay McEveley cross and a snap-shot by Simon Cox from just inside the home side’s box flew just wide.

Luke Moore had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside for the Baggies before having a weaving run halted by McEveley’s crunching tackle.

On the half-hour Albion’s Graham Dorrans and Derby’s Paul Dickov were both booked following a mid-pitch flair-up that started when Dorrans retaliated to Robbie Savage’s lunging challenge.

And veteran midfielder Savage volleyed over the bar moments later after Fredrik Stoor’s cross was half-cleared.

Carson came to Albion’s rescue five minutes from half-time when he pushed Stephen Pearson’s free-kick over the bar after it ricocheted through a crowd.

But he could do nothing two minutes later when Dickov collected a through-ball and turned a flat-footed Abdoulaye Meite before hammering a deflected shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Albion took some chances in the second half, committing players forward in search of an equaliser.

And in the opening moments Brunt looped a header just wide after a Dorrans corner was half-cleared.

Jonas Olsson made a fine block from a Pearson shot and moments later he headed onto the roof of the net from a Gianni Zuiverloon cross.

With 25 minutes to go home keeper Stephen Bywater dived bravely at the feet of Cox as he raced onto a through-ball from Gonzalo Jara.

But Albion’s persistence was rewarded on 82 minutes as the spread play out wide and Brunt’s right-footed cross drifted into the goalmouth for Cox to bundle home.

The goal was awarded despite furious protests from the home side that Cox had used his hand to guide the ball home.

I was still cheering our ‘winner’ when Derby equalised! There wasn’t even time to kick off again. Sad, but sometimes a smack across the chops is the way youngsters learn. Next time they’ll put the ball into row Z.

1 Good point, and it unfortunatly needs a match like that to bring them back to earth, just in time for Tuesday’s match against Cardiff, which will not be a walkover, but they can do it…..Boing Boing come on you baggie boys :-)

Di Matteo needs them bck on the training ground today. Derby are a terrible side languishing the in the lower reaches of this division and we cant even see out 1 further minute. Like last week until we were winning the away was quite subdued again come on baggies get behind the players. Alot of work still needed on the training ground and in the transfer market.

Robbie Savage and Paul Dickov are both idiots who have absolutely no talent. We look vunerable at the back and Olsson and Carson screaming at eachother just proved that there is a lack of trust. I think Carsaon has to be rested and bring Deano in his juggling antics worry me.

Carsaon, when did we sign him??

It’s disappointing to concede a goal so late on but we’re still in the top 2, 6 points ahead of third. Very important game on Tuesday, if we win that we could begin to break away from the pack.

We’re going to have days like this when we don’t play well and have to dig out a point.

    Still looking good.

Lads, lads, lads, come on, although Im gutted we threw away 2 points, lets not lose perspective, we are tripping along at a very nice pace, thank you very much. Derby may be in the lower half of the table, but their home record is as good as ours (Derby W6 D1 L3, compared to Albions W6 L1 D2), and if this is the worst that happens against a side with a record like that, I for one are more than happy to take it, because at the end of the day there will be a lot more wins than loses or draws.

    Away fans quite subdued ?

You must have been at a different game to me,
    Wolves v Bolton perhaps !!
IF you are a Baggie, which i seriously doubt, then you need a lesson in reality. Derby have one of the best home records in the division, and are a very nasty team to boot, certainly not in the image of their manager who was a sublime footballer.

Have to agree with Number 3, thought the support yesterday at times was poor. That’s what happens when people get carried away and think we are going to walk this league.

Well maybe we need to learn from nasty team Derby and start battling which we will need for Cardiff

Bang on No.7. I tried to explain to my missus about Robbie Savage, Paul Dickov and Lee Hendrie, (she isn’t even faintly interested but tried to understand), that players of that ilk are totally incongruous to the manager of Derby County. I have followed Nigel Clough’s career with interest. Maybe he sees these old, nasty has-beens as a means to keep Derby in Division 2 while he makes time to build a team his father would have been proud of. Certainly the tackle by the savage Savage warranted a sending off in my view. What a truly dreadful character he is. No.3 isn’t a Baggie, just a Wulfie drunk on the heady delights of beating Bolton.

Great that you lot are doing well. You will be a stronger team when you go up and with this manager your tactics might be more sensible than the previous ‘try to outplay the best teams and lose’ manager.
We’re in trouble of course. Hope for ‘saviour’ signings in Jan. but that’s unlikely. Oh well, with luck we’ll become a yo yo team as well.

I’m sure Jez and Mick will be on the open top bus parading through Bilston later. So this week the most fickle fans in the country are back in love with Mick. You will want him out next Saturday when Spurs embarrass you again.

Now onto the Albion, a point at Derby is a good result although a last minute equaliser always feels like being kicked in the never regions.

Amazing how after an AWAY DRAW all the slaters appear on here, I have’nt posted for a while on here but I’ll ask you all a question or two.

Had we been told that come December we’d be 6 points clear in the automatic places would you hav taken it?

Had we been told that come December we wuld of only lost 1 away game would you have took it?

For years the baggies have been abysmal away from home but this year there is a resilliance about us and I can now look at an away fixture and see us picking up a positive result which bodes well for us if we can maintain an home record, roll on the next 2 games both at home but tough fixtures but 6 points would be a fantastic return.

It baffles me how although we are unbeaten in six, scoring goals for fun, second best defence in the league, a good point at Derby, one of the worst places to go to in this league and that was without one of our most influential players of late, Jerome Thomas, people still find things to moan about.

I thought it was a great atmosphere at Derby, the ones who thought it wasn’t were probably the ones sat down making notes for things to moan about after the game! That’s if they were even at the game!

okay, we threw away a great chance of gaining all 3 points, but considering Dorrans should have been sent off and Cox carried the ball into the net I will gladly take a point. Bring on Cardiff!

    18. I don’t think Dorrans should of gone, Savages tackle was disgusting by a horrible little man and players such as Dickov and Hendry just sums them up. Meite at times worrys me along with Carson and they are two areas in particular that need strengthening if we were to go up. I was slightly anxious along with many others as we just don’t look like we can see out a narrow lead. Cardiff is a test but with the players they have out we SHOULD beat them.

Hi everyone Derby fan here. I thoroughly enjoyed a very competitive and lively game with lots of incidents and a good atmosphere.

We are in a transition at the moment as Cloughie is trying to build his own team. I know many other clubs fans do not like players such as Savage, Dickov etc but they put 100% in and get stuck and we love them after all you did Paul Robinson for many years and what he lacked in quality he made up for in effort.

As for Westbrom I know you have a few injuries (likewise us) I think you are not ready for the Premier league. Obviously if you earn 2nd spot then from a financial point of view fantastic but with the team I saw on Saturday you are no better than us when we were promoted. Newcastle aside I cannot see anybody going up from this division and staying up without huge investment.

Clubs buy Savage and Hendrie when they’re short of time. Both of them are a disgrace to football in my view using every wind-up trick in the cheat’s book to get opposition players sent off. They are not footballers. They are assassins. The disappointment our youngsters felt will have taught them a lesson they won’t forget. I am concerned with an article in E&S this morning that Dorrans is holding off signing an improved contract in case the big boys call in January. He should realise that signing a better contract doesn’t mean he’s stuck. He gets more dosh, we have to tell him if an enquiry comes in. If the price is right, every player has a sale price. That’s life.

    22. I knew Dorrans was not fully committed after his recent comments, it would not surprise me if TOMO had been speaking to him and had tapped him up about a move but David Moyes is another known admirer. We do not want to carry anybody, if he wants to leave it is on our terms at our price, it’s a shame but I do think he is slightly overrated.

    It`s que-sera mate.
It`s inevitable that he (Dorrans) will attract attention from pemiership clubs, but he is THAT good he should be setting his sights toward the upper echelons….the top four.

What gets me about that E&S article, is that they published another atricle last week where Dorrans said he was happy at the hawthorns, and was focussed on securing promotion…….
My point being JUST HOW do the E&S know that he is holding out ?

It smacks of mischeif making to me.

We were 1-0 down with 10 to go and we got a good point away at a side that is strong on their own patch. We kept the unbeaten run going and the smack across our broadside will be a useful lesson that RDM can draw on in future games. I doubt extra training will help, but I don’t doubt the word in the dressing room at the end of the game will have sharpened a few minds. That’s all it needs.
This manager is a far more composed and shrewd customer than his predecessor.
What was nice to see was that we have players who are prepared to mix it, and that was sadly missing under TM in the middle of the park.
I want to finish by complementing Brunt on the ball in for the first goal – it was undefendable and if Cox hadn’t scored I feel the Derby defender coming in behind him would have struggled to do anything else.
We should be looking forward to Cardiff with some lessons learnt and our confidence still intact.

I recorded the highlights on MoD on Saturday. I played the Cox goal one frame at a time and with my fancy DVD recorder it can do that at superb quality. I defy anyone, Derby or Albion to KNOW how it went in. Probably only Cox has any real idea. If he says it went in off his right tit, then it did. It looked like it could have hit anyone in that line and gone in. Savage, as usual, has to grab the limelight, “It was a foul, but I’d have done the same”. Now there IS a right tit! His tackle on Dorrans I also played one frame at a time. An utter disgrace that tackle and he should have walked. Cerby County’s Andy makes the same point I did, they are buying time while Nigel builds a team. On one main point I disagree with him. Derby 2 years ago were a ‘method’ side designed by Billy Davies, not far removed from the Meggo design. Hard to beat, no flair. Our young side is loaded with flair and inexperience so probably would get a mauling in the Prem as it is now. The difference is, we have a manager who addresses the problems. That’s where my hopes lie.
