Time to unleash The Hoff?

Friday 4th December 2009, 9:17AM GMT.

NL-BLOGI was flying out of Zurich airport on Sunday just as we kicked off against Birmingham, gutted that I couldn’t find a method to follow the game in the air, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

By the time I landed in Vienna, I had a dozen texts waiting on my phone from Rachel, who was making use of my seat in the Steve Bull and kindly keeping me up-to-date with the joyous events unfolding at Molineux.

I think the words, rubbish, clueless and pathetic were used as the basis for most of her texts.  By the time I had stumbled into Charlie P’s, an Irish Bar on the outskirts of Vienna, I caught the final five minutes which, by all accounts, was Wolves best period of the game.

As well as meeting my heroes, Dieter Meier and Boris Blank of Yello, whilst in Vienna, I went to watch Austria’s most successful club team, Rapid Vienna, in a training session.  One of their players, Christian Thonhofer, recognised that I was wearing the colours of Stefan Maierhofer’s new club and came over for a chat.

Christian, pictured above, is good friends with the Hoff and spoke to him on the phone soon after the Birmingham game.

I won’t share everything that Christian told me regarding their conversation, but he did say that the Hoff was desperate for a proper chance to show what he can do in gold and black and couldn’t understand why Wolves were playing the long ball against the Blues whilst leaving him on the bench.

Now I’m not saying that Stefan Maierhofer is the answer to all our current woes, but with Sylvan Ebanks Blake struggling to convert the few chances he is getting at this level and with no one else chipping in with goals, maybe the time has come to start Stefan against Bolton.

I watched the Birmingham game when I got back to the UK and it really was an incredibly abject performance.  All the talk about a relegation scrap and taking a kicking from Arsenal and Chelsea had obviously taken their toll on the players.

The belief and confidence that was there as a result of a successful season in the Championship has now ebbed away to the extent that the player’s look beaten before they have kicked a ball.

I’m getting sick of reading statements from Wolves players saying that they don’t expect to get any points against the bigger teams of the Premiership.  I want to read that they have got the passion and determination to go to the likes of Anfield and Old Trafford and put up a fight.

It should be a privilege to play for this club and the majority of the squad need to realise that wearing a Wolves shirt might be as good as it ever gets.

Mick must surely know he got it wrong in the summer.  He sounded confusing when saying that on the one hand he is happy with the players he has got but then admits that the club has players with experience, just not Premier league experience.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!  I know he couldn’t say it, but wouldn’t it be refreshing if he said, look I couldn’t sign who I wanted in the summer so I’ve got to work with what I’ve got.

Apart from a third of the £18 million spent to bring in Kevin Doyle, I would argue that the other £12 million has been wasted; spread too thinly bringing in too many average players with no top flight experience.

It’s obvious the team is a bit of a mess at the moment, with Mick doing his old trick of trying to wedge square pegs into round holes, ridiculously playing four centre backs against Birmingham.

And unfortunately the desperation of the January transfer market is never an ideal time to address the problem.  Players in form are usually players who have something to win with their current club.

Would Kevin Nolan or Jermaine Beckford want to swap almost certain promotion parties to come and join in the fun of a relegation battle?

January isn’t a time for gambles and somebody like Nigel Reo-Coker would be a welcome addition and a potential leader to galvanise a squad that are beginning to look far too battle weary with only a third of the season gone.

The Birmingham loss has hit everybody hard and understandably some frustrated fans are calling for the heads of the four M’s’ McCarthy, Morgan, Moxey and Mr Clipboard.
But for a little luck this season we could have found ourselves in a much healthier league position and I wouldn’t be an advocate of a change at the helm, just yet.

Notlob come to Mol tomorrow and, as well as starting with the Hoff, I would also switch Jarvis to the right wing, now that Kightly has been cruelly hit with injury yet again.  Ward should come into the left back slot and I would keep Hahnemann in and fill the middle with Henry and Castillio.

Bully is right, if we can’t beat Bolton at home then we don’t deserve to be in the Premiership and the players need to shake off the nerves, show some bottle and get stuck in from the off.

Enjoy your weekend and keep believing.

UTW!

Lets get a manager in who may be able to attract some quality in the January transfer window.

As for Ward, Hoff, Henry, Milijas, Jarvis, Berra, Hahenmann, Craddock, Stearman… all rubbish. Mancienne and Doyle are the only players who would get anywhere near other Premiership teams.

If we lose tomorrow then I will be in the bar starting the chant to sack mick…. WE WANT MCCARTHY OUT, WE WANT MCCARTHY OUT!

The respoonses from Mick and Karl Henry have been lame/uninspiring-suggesting something of what leads us to be in this mess so far. As for Moxey, he’s just more of the same we have coem to expect.

The time has come to show some confidence in Mick’s summer signings. He says he is happy with his ‘lot’ and if this is the case then play them! Lets see Milijas and the Hoff play from the start and give them a chance.

How can we judge the Hoff at the moment on the back of 10 minutes here and there?

Back in 2006, i said that MM would get us up but wouldn’t be able to take us to the next level. The first 14 games shows why this is the case and the summer signings apart from Doyle haven’t improved what we have already got. The long ball game is because the players haven’t got the confidence to do anything else. People who come on here suggesting we sack MM, forget it. He has achieved his number one objective in Moxey/Morgans eyes. The club will be self financing for the next few years with promotion and the parachute payments. I’m afraid we have become a yo yo club.

    Henry
    Milijas

Nath is right, show some pride in the shirt, for some of you this is the highest level you will ever play, and for some of you its too high as it is.

I think we will win 1-0 tomorrow and then we need to go to Manure and Spurs and really believe that we can get something not just roll over and have our bellies tickled.

Mick did an excellent job in getting us promoted and as champions as well. But he seems to be struggling at premiership level.

Here is my stupid idea: Should the transfers happen from the chairman down instead of the manager down? i.e. once promotion is attained then a premiership level manager is also put in place (as a matter of course), as well as premiership level players.

Then when it was too late we put him up front with cort who used to win the odd header and they both started scoring. Hopefully the hof could be the catalyst for doyle. but lets not leave it unitl it’s too late. I agree with castillo and milijas in mid field aswell, as milijas will look for the forward pass and the through ball rather than hoofing it or passing it sideways or backwards. 4) What are you on about? Mancienne has been poor this season. As for your assessment of four of Wolves players, I totally disagree. Ward is our current best left back. Stearman has performed better than anyone at the back and is one for the future. Jarvis has put plenty of crosses in and players like Sylvan at Chelsea have missed what can only be described a sitter. Milijas is captain of a Serb team that cruised into the World Cup and is one of our best creative players.
We need to put the Blues nightmare behind us and give it to Bolton. Wholesale changes are needed and we have owed them one for a very long time.

I would put up Sylvan Ebanks-blake for transfer or loan in the January window as he has proved to most of us that he is not up to Premiership football, and cannot fit in with the structure led by Kevin Doyle.
I would doubt any Premiership Club would want him now, so may be a second tier club and a deal or exchange for a more adaptable striker

I would bring back Volkes and run him in the team when we can recover him, a massive mistake in letting him out on loan, really great potential…We should look at the several cash strapped clubs and those facing Administration, as ther is much talent to be reaped…Ambrose and Moses from Palace for a start, and for Gods sake, get a new Manager, someone with balls like Neil Warnock or for all his faults both on and off the field, ElTel’ Terry Venerables would soon have our lads believing in themselves

For example a report (Defeats take toll on Wolves report)in the star the other day had Hahnemman saying that we “We were always likely to lose against Arsenal and Chelsea” Why??? with that sort of negative attitude then they will get beat everytime. To my mind we give these teams far to much respect, we should get in their faces put some crunching tackles in put them in row z if necessary just to let them know they are in for a game. And MM can’t use the excuse this time that he didn’t have the funds available, I’m sorry but he might be a ‘fairly’ good championship manager but his prem record leaves a lot to be desired. Agree with Nathan’s observations regarding last summer’s transfers; quantity definitely prevailed over quality.
Correspondingly, I’ve been far from persuaded that Maierhoffer can make a valid contribution; particularly against such as Bolton, who’ve made an art of direct, aerial football and would surely gobble us up were we to attempt to play them at their own game.
Too many fans are guilty of practicing the same narrow-mindedness they accuse McCarthy of, refusing to recognise Keogh’s merits as an intellegent, mobile foil for Doyle, releasing the latter from the need to drop deep and do the kind of linking and ball-retaining job that’s proving beyond Sylvain’s ability.
Sadly, I also agree with the contributors who suspect the game is already up as far as relegation’s concerned, we really did need to build a points base from which to slog through the scond part of the season.
Nevertheless, there would be great merit in at least registering a respectable points total come season’s end; anything above 30 would ultimately represent an encouraging platform for next season.
