Wolves boss hits back at criticism
Wednesday 2nd December 2009, 11:29AM GMT.
Defiant Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today came out fighting to insist he is happy with his summer spending – and pledged to get the maximum from his signings.
Sunday’s defeat against Birmingham triggered criticism from fans frustrated that the Championship-winning squad wasn’t strengthened enough in the summer.
McCarthy brought in nine players for around £18m, but of those, only club record £6.5m signing Kevin Doyle has made any significant impact so far.
Other major signings such as Ronald Zubar and Nenad Milijas have only had limited time on the pitch as they have adjusted to the pace of the Premier League. But the Wolves boss remains satisfied with his business in the August window and is determined to make it work.
“I was happy with the players we got –and still am,” said McCarthy. “I was really delighted with what we brought in and it’s for us not to rue what we might, or could, or should have done, but make it work with what we’ve got.
“That’s the important thing. And I’m not going to be bemoaning what I could or couldn’t do.
“It’s up to us – the players and the staff – to make it happen. Experience is great, but everyone was telling us last year – even though we were in a different league – how important experience is. And we did it and we won it.
“There’s plenty of experience here, it’s just Premier League experience we haven’t got lots of.”
McCarthy admitted the Premier League know-how of players such as Lee Bowyer, Stephen Carr and Barry Ferguson made a difference for Blues on Sunday. “You can see the value of that experience,” said the boss. “It certainly makes a difference when it’s going to be tough.”

AND GUESS WHAT LEAGUE WE ARE IN MICK FOR THE TIME BEING?
You should have bought in experience not the dross that you did( doyle apart). This is why you will never be a sucsessfull prem manager. Please go now

What a load of rubbish, same old MM talking a load of poo. How can he be happy with the players he brought in if he isn’t even playing them!!!!
MICK OUT!!!!

reading between the lines.. I get the impression he would have liked to have brought in some experience… but maybe someone blocked the moves ?? maybe on wage demands??

“There’s plenty of experience here, it’s just Premier League experience we haven’t got lots of.”
YOU SAID IT THICK MICK. JUST GO.
Thanks for winning us the Championship but it’s time to move on. Steve Morgan should thank you for this and bye bye.
to be honest mick that is a stupid comment to make, we are in the premier league and we need premier league players, the foreign signings you have made have barely featured and you constantly plat players out of position.
I believe you could and should have pushed moxey and morgan more and signed better players, you have a great eye for a bargain but we need players you have played 150-200 times at least in this league who know whats its all about. Sort it out
Report abuse
when we got promoted the first thing you said was, were going to buy players that have been there and done it! players with premiership experience! what happened to that then???
Stop making excuses, get on with the job at hand. Theres too much of this cheap talk about how we have got the right players and the next game is massive and a must win. Time to shut up and get on with it because if you dont do anything but win on Saturday you’ll have all day to talk this drivel because you’ll out of a job.

STILL TONGE WISE HEAD MICK ( ER MAY BE NOT )GET YOUR HEAD DOWN MICK ITS JUST ABOUT TO START
Report abuse
Mick the fans point is you and your tactics, yes on paper we have a good enough squad, it’s you putting square pegs in round holes and having no idea what to do next. Looking totally helpless by the dugout was a joke on Sunday.
Despite being derided at the time I have said all along that the Mick doesn’t have what it takes and that our summer signings weren’t good enough. All of the stick that I took off idiots like Loyal Cannock Wolf, truewolves and Brummie Rob Wolf about how great Mick was and how Doyle and Ebanks were going to hammer in lots of goals and how great players like Surman, Zubar and Milijas were going to be.
No Premiership experience like we were promised, no quality and broken promises from chief liar, sorry chief exec Moxey. Job done? If the job was to go up, spend just enough to keep the books balanced against charging more money to fans and then get relegated then you have done an excellent job Mr Moxey.
How can he be happy with the players that he got in the summer whilst the team is 2nd from bottom in the league with 2 wins from 14 games. And yet not a word from either Moxey or Morgan.
Well smell the coffee wolves fans, MM will be here for the whole season and it will be a stroke of luck for wolves to win another game between now and january.
Mick why dont you just leave your job. You are out of your depth and the board must surely realise this.
Also I am sick to death reading about the players interviews. How they are going to turn it around blah blah blah, Why dont we hear information from the people who run the club!
Great comment Jon (7). I’m sick of all this talk coming from the manager and players. Just shut up and get playing. Simple really.
One point – the only time we’ve looked like really creating recently is when our Serbian International, World Cup-bound playmaker Milijas plays.
The only way he will adapt to the pace of the game is by playing 90 minutes. No offence to Edwards, but we’re losing and not scoring with him in the middle of midfield so what have we got to lose? He wasn’t considered good enough by MM in the Championship so how he’s a regular in the Premier League baffles me. A good sub to come off the bench.
Foley has also got to return Saturday, with Stearman pushed alongside Berra (if Zubar isn’t fit). Again, sorry Jody, but you’re a cracking squad player but shouldn’t be a Premier regular.
Would love to see results improve and Mick come through this a better manager. But apparently his record at Premiership level is played 51 won 4 drawn 8 and lost 39. Someone please put a positive spin on those stats
Report abuse
Mick you are one game away from the sack (we all hope) – tactically you just haven’t got a clue at this level and I hope if we dont win (a draw aint worth jack squat) against Bolton you do the decent thing and resign in the best interests of the Club. The Club is far bigger than any of us including your ego Mick. Yes we desperately need some Prem. experience in Jan. particularly in the middle of the Park but where is Burnley’s?
Hmmm not rose tinted spec wearers about is there? To be honest why should there be after the rubbish served up over the past months.
Mick round pegs square holes is what your doing with our team. Also all the players on show over the past few months have been bought by YOU9Except Craddock i think but not sure)
You need to go now and the backroom staff.
I know Steve Morgan prob wont read these comments but sort it out Mr Morgan before we become an even more laughing stock than we already are!!!!!
Also if Spurs csn hit 9 past Wigan i fear for us in the next few months.

If they are good enouth way dont you plat them.
SACK THICK MICK NOW Morgan get someone in to give us a chance

McCarthy, your running out of excuses. Please leave before it is to late and let see if we can salvage this season with someone who can motivate (Ian Holloway showed this on sky sports the other night) & has the technical ability ( a proven premiership manager with a good No2 – Houlier & Curbishley say) to put a team out that actually does “put a shift in”. Morgan,You are going to lose season ticket bums on seats next year if you dont stick to your word and get the right type of player in, not some muppet from the divisions below. Im an out of work manager, so if you want me to come and have a crack, I would love to oblige

Talk is cheap Mick.
Be brave. get the ball down and play.
Bring the ball out from the back (Mancienne Stearman Foley in)
Get the midfield to play the ball on the deck (Milijas/Costillas in Henry/Edwards out).
It’s Mick’s indecisiveness and lack of trust in his players’ ability that is costing us.
Talk about a Belt and braces approach…two stopping centre halves, 2 centre halves at fullback, 2 holding midfielders, long throws, narrowed pitch…it’s all negative.
The trousers have still fallen down!
Change it and GO FOR IT!

Says it all doesnt it totaly contradicts himself on one hand hes happy with the players hes bought on the other hand he says we lack prem experienced players which is it Mick your happy with the players you bought or your unhappy we havent got any Premiership experienced players.
If your so happy with the summer signings why dont you play them or in reality were they a waste of money like,Darren Ward,Jason Shackell,Steven Elliot ETC and now you want to add more Championship players like Rob Hulse(not good enough for the Baggies) and Eddie Nolan.Steve Morgan please take control your pal Gerrard Houlier would be just what Wolves need.
Ok, I see this as Mick taking responsibility but it also concerns me because what I have seen so far. We have beaten a Jekyll and Hyde Wigan and a Europa League distracted Fulham. I have never seen a team give the opposition as much time and space on the ball as Wolves. Where is the closing down, the tackling? I fear Mick has tried to copy the Stoke way, but without the players to do it. He talks of experience, but if I remember correctly, he was trying to get rid of Craddock when we were in the Championship. Yet he picks him, when in my opinion, he should be replaced. Burnley have little premiership experience and Newcastle had plenty. Look where they are now. Experience does count, but not as much as tactics and management skill I hate to be all doom and gloom, but I do not believe that we have the players to correct the big problems. The players we are being linked with, added together with our signings makes me think that Wolves are planning on being a yo-yo club. I am quite sure Doyle has a relegation release clause, otherwise he would not have signed. I really hope I am wrong, but I can already see Bolton packing the midfield and controlling the game. Kevin Davies, I believe is suspended, but you can see Bolton scoring from a set piece. Anyway, come on Wolves prove me wrong.
Lads, Give Mick a chance…I think some of the performances have been cracking, we just haven’t had the finishing. Although, I am also a bit bemused why Miljas doesn’t play. But I think its way early to be getting on his back…he got us up…if we did go down he’d be just the man to get us up again…give Mick a chance. Super Mick McCarthy!!

McMARTHY WHY DONT YOU EMBRACE THE WORDS, IM FAILING AGAIN !!! you been here before and by the looks of it, your failing and falling behind the pack of teams that we are supposed to be competings with AGAIN, JUST LIKE YOU DID AT SUNDERLAND, fair enough you didnt have any backing whilst your time up there but you also havent learnt anything have you, team spirit, morale is clearly showing in the performance at the moment and clearly you are out of your depth you have no idea tackticaly in this division.
Simple changes needed.
1. Stop playing players out of position.
2. Edwards should not be playing. He is simply not good enough at ths level.
3. PLAY THE SERB. Granted he may have been lazy in some games but he has clearly got class. Lets not forgot that he is a regular in a serbian international team who stormed their way to the World Cup. I personally think that he has too much class for our team, nobody seems to be on the same wave length as him.We are crying out for creativity!!!!
Lets get behind the team, istory has shown us that our negativity will et us nowhere!!!

I have said it before and I shall say it again.
Mick McCarthy has done all he can for the Wolves- Thank you! But now it is time to move on as we need a Premiership manager with experience to keep us up. Right now the players have no confidence and as you keep playing a different team each week have no idea of what is going on. We are not Chelsea who can rotate players as even their 2nd string are full of world class players with bundles of experince. We are doomed unless we get rid of MM. PLEASE GO!

think we have been sold down the river who’s fault is it moxey, morgan or maybe mm, said he could do it on the cheap like he always does . well we just aint competing and never will this season and can forget about anyone wanting to come here when the transfer window opens..dont want to see anyone lose their job but lets keep an eye on moyes and mark hughes ..hughes works best on a smaller budget ie blackburn and moyes too
Report abuse
Good points from Darlowolf & Richwolf64. It’ll be interesting if/when MM leaves the club and can talk freely to hear what really happened during the transfer window. Did he get who he wanted or was someone else calling the shots (holding the purse strings) just like with Dave Jones. He doesn’t sound happy; “we have to work with what we’ve got” “we haven’t got PL experience” talking about the blues game “you can see the value of experience, it makes a difference”. Says it all!!!!
Morgan’s silence speaks volumes. I get the feeling he won’t be happy or spend money until he gets to appoint his own manager who he trusts with his money…maybe that’s what he’s waiting on. Don’t wait to long!!
Our promotion required premiership planning, so i`d ask what exactly was the strategy behind our summer purchases. Did we buy players to strengthen our weakest positions, and/or to build on our preferred style and system of play etc etc..oh and then why buy the players who MM won`t give a game to??
Apart from Doyle last Sunday MM put out a championship team and formation that leaked far too many goals last year. In reality we play 4-2-4 with isolated wide men, and already outnumbered in midfield, we have Edwards pushing on to support the front men leaving Henry on his own against 2 or 3 opposition midfielders. It has only looked ok this season when we have played Castillo holding the midfield to protect our back four. Why play wingers anyway with no tall front men – oh yes we have one but he can`t get a game. Why bother with long throws whe`n we can only do so when our centre halves have run 60 yards to join in – we don`t have 4 or 5 six footers like Stoke.
MM has no choice now to say he is happy with the summer buying, as a result of the spend on new players we are second from bottom, with the second worse goal difference, and did not buy any central defenders when it was obvious we had defensive issues with our players and formation despite our promotion last year.
Like the song says Mr Morgan – silence is golden.
I think the number of press comments from MM et al already since Sunday shows a team in crisis. We have next to no Premier experience either in the backroom staff or on the pitch and we are woefully short of the pace. I’m just waiting for Portsmoith to pick up the elusive next win that will put us bottom as we deserve no better the way we are playing. TC and MM are like rabbits in headlights at the moment – I just hope Moxey isn’t telling SM to sit tight. If we don’t win on Saturday SM should cut his losses and ditch MM but more importantly get rid of the backroom staff with him – how many managers have we had in where the Board have said they cannot sack any backrrom staff?? If we’re going to seriously think about staying up we need a new manager with time to look at players in January. Taxis for MM, TC………etc

You remember all of the comments from people that posted like months back? How sad are you? Wait we know that already. Very!

Surprise, surprise, Mick makes a statement and the get mick out cretins are out in force- has for those of you speaking from afar – you don’t see the whole picture from the tv! and before you say you support the wolves-you do not! you are fans, supporters support the club with hard cash, now —- off back to the armchair, has for you MM haters get a life or better still go back to your true colours -blue and white.
I am sick to death as well, reading about the drivel spewed out by so called wolves fans who have not got the nerve to support the club through thick and thin, I bet you were all there in the bad day’s eh! that’s why we nearly went under and only had crowds of 2,000+,
we are all frustrated and upset, but we don’t all come out shouting for the manager’s head every time we lose! you don’t have a license to being the “only ones” who care, that’s why we are were we are today because in the past muppets like you have called for the managers head and those at the mol have not been strong enough to stick to their guns and support the manager? instead they have listened to the few and got rid, I only hope the present board are stronger, after all said and done if you don’t like it you know were to go and we will be a better club for it.
Has for Mick’s comments it is paper talk, again he was probably answering to a question, what is he supposed to do say NO! now that would be good management according to you lot.

Usual retaliatory drivel but we would have to be super dillusional to expect anything else. I agree some of the players are good enough, problem is he and clipboard certainly aren’t. Still get used to it because we are stuck with them. We were outbid with transfer fees and salaries because we are cheapskate. Accept that Mick will get maximum from squad availalable, but the fact is that the “maximum” will get us relegated, we (a) are simply not good enough and (b) tactically inept, sorry to say this but the players didn’t seem to want to know on Sunday, did that show a lack of confidence in our tactics or simply was it a lack of self belief, or god forbid both!!
Never heard such a load of rubbish in all my life..If he is happy with the players he has bought why is he not playing them?
Mick’s words are merely to defend his players, I am sure deep down he wishes he did things differently. Though I do believe he has not made a bad signing, as more would should with experience alongside them. he has just made too many signings that still need to prove they can really play at this level. I am sure most would have been happy with the signings as they came in, it’s just that extra lack of quality here and there that as let us down.
Has the Express and Star always had so many hate readers and/or Albion fans? It’s embarrasing to read sometimes, I wonder how many people on this thread actually go to the games? I agree that some of MM team selections have been poor (I.E. not playing Foley when fit (i assume), playing 4 Centre halfs across the back and not playing Keogh with Doyle when this has been our most effective strike force)but for people to come on here stating that Mick should go and Moxey out is shocking, we all know we have an inferior team to many in the league and we all know we were going to struggle in the league but let’s just wait til the new year and see where we are til we start complaining, as the song states…Wanderers will never die, we’ll keep the gold flag flying high….
What is the Muppet on about? That is exactly the problem when he says he`s happy with what he`s got. Then he says we have plenty of experience but it`s not premiereship experience.Muppet Mick WE ARE IN THE PREMIERESHIP,DIDN`T MOXEY TELL YOU?Now,Mr.Morgan can you see what the fans are upset and worried about. They are upset because of his lack of ability to do the job and worried because you seem reluctant to get rid of him.It may cost to bring in a manager who is competent and it may cost to bring in 2/3 players who can keep us up,but surely you have to thin its worth it or did you get to like the championship too much?
In fairness, what do you expect him to say? The squad is low on confidence and if he were to come out now and say that he didn’t think they were good enough, how many people would be on here slagging off those comments and the negative impact they would have with two crucial home games coming up before Christmas? We can’t get any other players in before we play a further six games. He’s already done enough to knock players confidence with chopping and changing the team/tactics etc. Would you all have preferred him to take it a step further and publicly told the squad they’re not good enough (even though they’re not!)
I’m no McCarthy fan and a 7 hour return journey in the pishing rain was far more enjoyable than the 2 hours spent at the Molineux on Sunday. But get a grip people.

Where are Castillo, Milijas, Maeirhofer and Surman?
You then go on about not having experience and winning the title last season and then admit that Bham’s experience helped them on Sunday.
Another thing Mick why is our midfield probably the worst in premiership history? Do you honestly think players such as Halford, Henry and Edwards are going to keep us in the premiership? I would suggest not Mick!

Don’t panic everyone, Rob Hulse has prem experience………….. what a joke.

I’m not going to get in to the MM must go/must stay debate. Reading between the lines it would appear that Mick is basically saying that he hasn’t been able to bring in the players he would have liked. Just as in 2003/2004 we appear to have been operating in a market a few notches below the required level. I think we need to take a look at the Boardroom in that respect. As regards Saturday – this is simply a ‘must win’ game. WWFC forever !

Thier position is not ideal but you’ve got Bolton at home next Saturday and West Ham have Man Utd at home a Wolves victory with a West Ham defeat sees Wolves over take Bolton and if West Ham are defeated then Wolves are only a point from safety.
Could be something to build on!
Surely McCarthy deserves a run till at least after the busy Xmas period to turn things around considering he got you promotion think of all the managers who have failed you!

1, THE DEFENCE:
Hennessy – to young, lacks experiance in Professional football full stop.
Berra – Only played regular football in Scotland, not enough english football experiance alone.
Mancienne – Never played regular first team Professional football in his life.
Stearman – Signed from Div 2 Leicester 18 months ago, now expected to play in Prem.
Foley – Erm, anyone seen our player of the year recently??
Craddock – at 34 he is now playing regular Premiership football within a make-shift 4 man defence that comprises of more centre halves than has ever been witnessed at a professional football club. A Bionic miracle and our joint top goal scorer.
Zubar – No english experiance, so lets make things easy for him and play him out of position.
Thats just the defence covered. With £18m spent you really would of bourght some quality at the back wouldn’t you, or is it just me??
2, THE MIDFIELD……….Edwards, signed from Luton…..oh, I cant be bothered.

Let’s face it – we’re a Championship Club. Financially, player-wise, management-wise, ambition-wise. We shouldnt get too worked up by what we cant change.
Let’s just enjoy our moment in the sun while we can. Because next year, we’ll be back in the CC for sure.
I for one will still be going. There’s nothing wrong with CC. The quality of football is good.
It’s a league where we can compete on an equal footing with everyone else and we dont have to drive ourselves into financial ruin just to compete. It’s where we’re comfortable.
All you people going mad about the current situation should lighten up. Just accept that we’re not PL quality, enjoy the matches win or lose and then forget it until the next game. It is not life or death.
Come next season, I’ll still get my season ticket and support the boys – whoever they are.
Unless we get an inspirational manager like a Brian Clough that can inspire ordinary players into world beaters or get a Billionaire benefactor, this is where we’ll stay.
The glory days of the 50′s are long gone and we are where we are.
Just accept it, support your team and enjoy the game however it turns out. Just Smile :)

His ability in the transfer market (stating he would have rather had blues centre halfs than the ones we eventually got!)………appalling.
His insistance of playing players out of position in the premier league……….appalling
His inability to motivate players in local derbies………appalling
His inability to devise his best team……..appalling
His disrespect for the fans with an opinion…………appalling
Thats my opinion and I’m entitled to it.

If that scoreline is correct MM has to go, resign or what I don’t care. I still maintain we have a good squad – good enough for survival and Morgan has done a satisfactory job in providing the funds. So basically our league position is totally unacceptable, a new boss often wakes the players out of their slumbers.
Fight, fight wherever you may be.

I think the most interesting stat is that Wolves were the no.4 highest spender in the summer and we are in exactly the same position at this stage as we were in 2003 under Dave Jones who had no money to spend in the summer.
I think MM has got the Jan window to get some signings in or he will be gone. The only Prem quality players we have now are Doyle and possibly Milijas, Zubar and Jarvis.
The back 4 needs to go, Craddock and Berra are never going to cut it at this level. Name me some SPL defenders that came to EPL and did really well? None.

I have seen some post’s on here over the last few days, but that one takes the… biscuit shall we say.
Defeat Sat and I want MM to go too, but some of the players you named there shouldn’t of been named (and the others for the reasons that you did!)
Hennessey – The Wales number 1 who has played 100 first team games for Wolves and over 20 first team caps for Wales.
Mancienne – Over 80 first team games at Championship level..
Stearman – The player we beat of premiership clubs for, played 150 first team games at Championship level (as for being signed from League 1 Leicester…. he never played for them in that league, they were relegated and we signed him!!!) So at that point they were Championship Leicester!!
I take it you mean lack of “Premiership” experience with these…. ??
Zubar out of position…. isn’t he actually a right back… wasn’t that where we WERE playing him!
The section of the team you were going to start on is the position of worry. Midfield!
We don’t provide cover for the back four, we don’t create (leaving the defence to lump long balls forward) we don’t pressure the opposition as did most of last season and certain games this season.
All in all, I think the players confidence has hit rock bottom, I think MM has lost certain players in the dressing room for changing the team too regular and dropping players without good cause. Also his insistence to stick with players who are not up to scratch.
His over reliance on a certain few (Kightly, Doyle and Blake) has back fired, 1 won’t be fully fit for the season, 1 obviously can’t hack it and the other is starved of any good service.
The defence is the same defence who conceded so many last season, yet our expansive game has gone, meaning we still concede and now dont look like we will score either.
This is where the Prem experience is crucial, players who lose 3-4 games in a row and know how to come back from it. In 3-4 years of us having the likes of Jarvis, Kightly, Henno, Blake etc you think about it, these players have been used to winning 70% of there games (Championship I know, but a win is a win at any level)
Now they have to get used to being 2nd best, losing more than you win or draw. This is where I think MM has let us down, these players need true guidance at this stage and who do we have to turn too….. I can’t name 1! The only one that comes to mind is Craddock who has been relegated in his 2 attempts.
I agree with most, I will give my full backing on Sat for the team and for the club. I will sing with everyone else in hope rather than in belief.
I hope MM can do it, I just don’t believe he will.
For me though, defeat on Saturday has to be the end. To much emphasis was put on these games from management. Blues took away there pressure by going to Anfield believing they could win and got something out of the game.
Defeat and its time to move on in search of a new man, failure to get someone new in at that stage and I fear the worst for us, I really do.

How ironic !,Isnt it strange that Muppet Mick made exactly the same statement about his sunderland squad when he was there, It wasn’t untill after he departed them he pointed the blame at lack of funds from there board. He is way out of his depth and 99% of the fans knew this was going to happen prior to the season began.Mick is so far out of his depth it’s becoming embarrassing so come on Morgan and lets get a manager in who can develop the talent we have!,Get rid of the deadwood thats not good enough and MORE importantly,Muppet mick doesn’t want any ego’s within the club that can rival his so it’s no wonder we havn’t got any ince’s or alex rae type players.

I feel totally vindicated with my comments at the start of the season MM is not the Manager we should have in the Premiership. His signings in the main have been a joke Halford being a prime example. Castillo, Milijas, Maeirhofer and Surman should be given a run out not just sit warming the bench. Castillo, Milijas played together at Red Star for two years yet are being kept out of the side by Edwards come on wake up and smell the coffee. Sunday was a joke players substituted after 30 minutes mind you he wouldnt be in my starting 20 anyway long throw nothing else.
MM has to go now but who would take the job we are doomed anyway, I am sick of hearing Super Mick ang on about why its all gone wrong the man is not up to the job and his history in Management proves the point plus are the current back room team any good me thinks not. He has had his chance and failed: suggestions for replacement:
Curbishley and his old Charlton back room team,
Grayson from Leeds or Southgate yes I said Southgate.
The day on Sunday was the flatest day of the season both on and off the pitch MM OUT NOW!!!

I’m fed up of hearing the cheap excuse of ‘lack of premier league experience’, how much prem experience have Burnley got? There have been previous teams in the past who have stayed up with virtually their championship team like the first Wigan team, West Ham, think about the their team that played Liverpool in the FA cup final a few years back, how many of their players at the time had played in the premier league before, players like Anton Ferdinand, Nigel Reo-Coker, Matthew Etherington and even Marlon Harewood!
I can’t defend that shocking performance on Sunday however they have shown far better than that this season. I do still think there’s quality in this squad but there are some players who don’t look like cutting it, Halford being the first one, what a waste of 2 million quid, Ebanks-Blake lacks the class at the moment for this level, I didn’t see the point of the signing of Maierhofer, and likewise Surman.
While Doyle has been the best of the new bunch I still think Milijas has quality and he needs a run in the side, Zubar looks decent and if Castillo can produce his debut game form more consistently then he will be good player for us. For me its extremely bad coaching on the training field, poor motivation and bad tactics, our lads look confused and scared of Birmingham so what was the plan Mick? What on earth did you say to the players?
We can also debate whether the midfield would work better with Milijas and Edwards who I think has got the making of good box to box midfielder, why can’t we have two central midfielders who can defend and attack. Karl Henry is not a bad player as such but he only can play one role and that’s been the one who tidies up in the midfield going forward he doesn’t bring enough to the team and as captain he disappeared on Sunday.
The back four does have some good/decent defenders, Craddock has done better what I thought he would likewise Berra, Stearman has been excellent, Mancienne again still has quality but he is not full back, and of course Stearman can do right back but not the left. Ward is not a favourite of mine but he does bring balance to the side.
Wayne Hennessey has been excellent and after his first really bad game of season he gets dropped, Hahneman didn’t put a foot wrong on Sunday but still it doesn’t show great faith by the manger on Hennessey especially when it was Chelsea of course we are going to concede to a class side like Chelsea. Dropping our number 1 I think was a worse decision in my opinion.
How Mick has come across in TV interviews in the past, he seems to be a laid back type of guy which might be good sometimes but maybe it’s the atmosphere at the training ground, is too laid back? Do the players work on passing, movement off the ball, their technique and assume one of the most important element is too give players confidence make them believe in their own ability.
Can Mick do that in this League? Well in his previous jobs the type of football that has been described is that of workmanlike, we did see some good football last season but the second half of the season it was more workmanlike, now in this league that standard doesn’t cut it, I do think our players capable of reaching 17th however I can’t really see Mick getting the best of the current crop of players.
We have spent the most money out of the three promoted clubs and the league table doesn’t lie, we are not doomed yet however things don’t improve quickly starting against Bolton then its time for the three Ms to take reasonability. We fans have been doing our part so the club better start putting their act together.
Some questions for them to answer:
1. Explain the reasons Mick for cutting width of the pitch down, ‘If it worked for Stoke it might work for us’ that doesn’t give the impression of whole lot of thinking went behind the decision.
2. Why was Sam Vokes sent out loan when he is probably our second most talented striker, in my opinion?
3. This one is for Jez and Steve Morgan, why did you guys lie about been competitive (not making the numbers up) and not making the same mistakes of last time, fans I think would of respected you two if didn’t do all the spin and fail to produce the promise in the transfer market. Be more upfront in the future and you also failed Mick on that one.
(Actually we all know the reasons don’t we)
4. Mick would you own up to your mistakes for once? That can go for Morgan and the fat controller as well.
5. Then also, Mick, tell your players to start doing ‘the walk’ than doing ‘the talk’. It’s made some crap articles in the Express and Star.
Final note I don’t think they will do anything to resolve the issues, because the culture of the club is too make profit and as long the balance sheets look good there won’t be any changes of staff in near future unless things really get embarrassing for Mr Morgan like doing ‘a Derby’.

MM’s defiant stance on his signings is understandable but, as usual, there is inconsistency in his statements. If the Serbian is a satisfactory buy then why is he not getting consistent playing time? By all accounts he is one of the few players that can deliver a quality pass or free kick. He is Captain of his national side who just happen to be going to the World Cup!!! Our forwards have received little or no service all season long!!!
MM needs to stop talking to the press and deliver results starting with Bolton this weekend.

20 – Totally agree, the team we’re playing is too negative, two holding midfielders, centre halfs at full back and two stoppers in the centre!
I’d like to see zubar in the centre of defence and foley and ward in the full back positions to give us balance. milijas in the centre to take some of the creative responsibility off jarvis, he’s the only attacking midfielder in most games as henry, edwards and halford are all defensive so teams just double up on him and we then have no creativity at all. May be the perfect time to bring back keogh aswel, although he is terrible in front of goal, doyle and ebanks are too static together and we lack a lot of movement upfront. I don’t feel doyle has set the world alight either but I think he just edges ebanks at the moment, hopefully he’ll get some fitness and confidence in the reserves and coming off the bench as I do still feel he can do it at this level, he’s a goalscorer and I think even bully would struggle with the service our midfield provides!

firstly i’m sick of the rubbish mick and the players come out with in the papers every week. talk about doing the other teams motivational teamtalk.
just shut up and do your talking on the pitch!!!.
secondly broken promises regards experience, the players bought in were not what we were told to expect. but then mick transfers have been the odd hit, the ones for the future, or over priced dross we can’t giveaway, so why did i get my hopes up during the summer!!!
having said that i don’t think we have a bad squad, again i have said all along that mick keeps picking players out of position or out of form, baffling formations and tactics so again why did i expect it to be different in the premiership!!!!
if burnley can win at home on a regular basis with mostly the same squad with one or two additions then why can’t we??
we are now being left adrift at the bottom of the league it may be only 1 win or so, but who are we going to beat at the moment, we couldn’t beat the teams around or below us, brum, hull, porstmouth, blackburn etc etc, i hope we pick up points against bolton and burnley but where are our goals going to come from, we are not making any chances so how can we hope to score, did we have a shot on target on saturday!!all these other teams i’ve mentioned are making chances, missing them maybe but scoring a few too, we aren’t period!!
by christmas we could be bottom and needing 2-3 wins to get back into relegation pack. then is mick going to get more time, money and who the hellis going to come to wolves in jabuary if we are in that predicament.
rant over, i was not expecting miracles but we have gone from playing well and be unlucky in the 1st few games etc to now playing badly regularly and being well beaten.
i can’t see where next win or goal is coming from but will love mick to prove me wrong, come on play milijas at least he gives us a bit of attacking class and gives our strikers some hopeof a decent ball.come on the wolves keep us in the fight don’t give up give us something to cheer.

I suggest that you and the players stop talking to the press and firstly pick the right team and then get into the opposition from the off. Being a Brummie this performance ranks as bad as the 4-0 Vile thrashing.
If you are happy with all your signings, why did it take so long to get Zubar in and why is Milijas – the Serb captain who cruised to the World Cups – always the scapegoat?
Drastic changes are needed for Saturday and the line up needs to look like this as we need goals and to be tighter at the back -
Hahnemann Stearman Zubar Berra/Carddock Ward Jarvis Castillo Milijas Keogh Doyle The Hoff
Report abuse
The obvious criticism of MM at the moment is he does not appear to know what his best team is. Playing players out of position seems to be caused by him being caught between his favourites and making room for players who really must play.
I think this is the case with Zubar, whose obvious strength, speed and skill in training mean he is a must, but now Foley is fit surely that means one of Craddock and Berra should give way. Also Mancienne could have played at right back and Zubar could have started where his strengths are obviously needed in the centre of defence.
Ward’s absence has been a problem and Elokobi has struggled so why not try Hill or even Surman back in there? I like left-footed players and players playing in familiar positions. Players will always know at least what they should be doing and more likely to be able to do it!
It is also clear that Castillo should be in the centre of midfield in every game with Edwards coming on as an impact player. The first thing every team must do is be difficult to beat and with Castillo on the pitch on Sunday Birmingham would have had a much harder time controlling the midfield.
If Jarvis is going to play I think he must operate on the right hand side and he really should come on off the bench as an impact player. His speed can cause problems for tiring sides in the second half, and he is right footed PERIOD. His left foot is about as good as mine.
Get Kightly fit! Take time to get him right and don’t rush him or throw him in again.
I’d give Surman an extended go on the left and would consider playing Milijas up front at home with Doyle and start Keogh on the right hand side. Away from home I would drop Milijas back in front of Castillo and Henry away from home in a 4-5-1 formation with Edwards starting on the right hand side instead of Keogh.
Our best formations are at home:
Henners or Hanners!
Foley, Zubar, Berra, Ward
Keogh, Henry, Castillo, Surman
Milijas
Doyle
and away from home, same back four of
Foley, Zubar, Berra, Ward, but with a midfield of
Edwards, Henry, Milijas, Castillo, Surman
and Doyle up front. If we’re doing well Surman or Milijas can go forward in a 4-4-2.
If Edwards is@#$%&then we could try Halford on the right in Kightly’s enforced absence. Or what about JONES? What has happened to him???
Anyway these formations are available right now and have everyone in their best position with the best chance of being able to do something. Hopefully this will win a few games and keep us in touch so that we can recruit 2 to 3 new players in the Jan window.
Let’s be clear this team is unlikely to keep us in the division.

(1)B-ham spent £15m., Wolves £18m.Who got the best value?
(2)Since MM was a centre half and should know what’s involved, why don’t Wolves have a reliable pairing?
(3) Why do opponents wander about unmarked on the edge of our penalty area free to score (starting with the first goal conceded to West Ham and on to Bowyer on Sunday with several in-between)?
(4)Why do several players talk-up how` determined they are and then show so little on the pitch?
(5) What are the odds on MM getting a hat-trick of relegations from the Premier League?

Guys i think some of you are missing the point. We are second bottom for a reason. Lack of quality, lack of self belief and a lack of direction. When i see high balls pumped up to striker that is not firing on any cylinders and a midfield that was totally dominated by a player that lost his way in the premiership previous, you can only look at one man.
whether he was given the money, whether he got the players he wanted, to turn out and play in a gold shirt with no desire is a disgrace.

As one of the ‘cretins’ from a far I’m pretty insulted by your comments. I for one have done my time. I was there for the 2000+ crowds. I had 23 consecutive season tickets from 1980-2006, and splashed out on 4 season tickets for my wife until to 2006. They seemed happy enough to take my ‘hard cash’ support back then. I was even there away to Lincoln when the Wolves had already been mathamatically relegated into the 4th division.
So are you saying us cretin’s can only post comments if we agree with your point of view, or are we not supposed to comment at all.

DearMM,
we dont have the quality in the squad,or leadership. its only Melijas who can regularly pass forward, control and put in a good cross, and you dont play him that often. none of the strikers look a goal threat apart from Doyle. Our defence is not coping with the movement and pace of top class strikers.so how good is your squad?
Mick I’m really concerned about the mental toughness of your players and the lack of leadership in your team. We lose to chelsea, and arsenal and they start feelin sorry for themselves and then let down 20,000 fans.
You place great emphasis on monitoring performance in training,so why didnt you notice that some of your players were not mentally up for the brum match and drop them?
When you say your happy with your squad, tell me this.
How come blackburn who lost 6-2 to arsenal won their nxt game 3-2. they lost 5nil to chelsea and then beat portmouth 3-1 nxt game.
Burnley who are supposed to have an inferior squad lost 3 nil to chelsea and then 4 nil to liverpool and won their nxt game 3-1.

we should be careful not to take MM’s comments in this particular context too literally; as several contributors point out, there’s a subtext of real significance in his allusions to the frustrated attempts to add experience in the summer, and the positive contributions of seasoned pros to Blues’ current form. it’s no secret that his employers quantify success by the relative health of the bank balance; the Scott Dann affair is proof positive that Mick was operating at a disadvantage compared with many (although obviously and significantly, not ALL) of his peers at this level.
Also, he’s not likely to publicly lament the perceived failings of his players, to do so would only inflict further damage to fragile egos.
The ‘Thick Mick’ jibes are plain ignorant and ungrateful; Mick’s savvy enough to have negotiated two undoubtedly succesful,(beyond all our own expectations) campaigns in a tretcherous Championship.
However, and unavoidably, the bare facts of our current position, form, and most crucially Mick’s own team selections and the application of his ideas and methods thus far this season, are only serving to undermine what would otherwise be justifiable sympathy for his plight. I think it’s fair to suggest that the majority of supporters would now accept, and might even have accepted at the outset,a respectable failure this season of a similar ilk to 2003.
On current evidence, even that seems beyond us, and as such, one can only conclude that Mick’s protestations ring somewhat hollow.

My uncle Ted sat me on his shoulders in 1953 when Wolves played Arsenal. Since then I have enjoyed great triumphs and great disappointments. But never before have I seen a Wolves team just give up!
That is the most shameful thing that I have ever witnessed at Molineux, and it is obvious that this team does not know what we expect of them. They should be true Wolves and never give up. Give us 100% and we will not stop supporting, but be quitters and cowards as we saw last weekend, and the supporters will walk away from you. Watch the crowd figures in the next few games.
This new idea of taking away the team colours from these abject cowards and failures until they can show they are competing like Wolves really appeals to me. Black shirts only for them until we can see they are trying again!

Mick has to go and quick, He is a great championship manager, excellent at picking championship “in and at em” type players, but when it comes to spotting real quality he fails us and every other team he has previously managed, I also believe good quality players will not come to us for 2 reasons, 1 stupid cap on wages, surely the right player on 10K per week more keeping you up for the prize of 30 million is a no brainer! Secondly quality players will not come to work for Mick when they can go to bigger name managers that recognise and magage player egos effectively. Mick is only interested in “yes players” in my opinion, He picks and buys the safe choice, the yes men! Mick Out and bring in Steve Morgans buddy, Gerard Houllier, Fulhams Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes will be available soon. For me the main criticisms of Mick are these:-
1. He has never known which is his best team (even when winning the Championship)
2. He still doesn’t. And Worse still, he now has a crop of new players to swap and change. All these permutations could take Mick 3 more seasons to sort out.
3. He believes in “honesty” in players above “quality”. The few quality players we have need match fitness but rarely get any game time.
4. Mick does not tend to give players who deserve a chance a consistent run in the team but tends to revert to type by picking the tried and tested honest pro. These are the players who give gut busting performances on demand but lack the genuine ability needed to influence games. We will never create a team of potential match winners with this philosophy.
Mick suprised me when he got us promoted, and all credit to him for doing it, but I have never truly believed he is a man for the next level. My dad was calling Radio WM for his head last year when we were top of the league and he did have a fair point.
My main grip, though, is this:-
When we got promoted the “Premiership plan” was to buy in a bunch of older tried and tested Premiership players. The club said this was essential for premiership survival, but we did not get any of those payers in. Why? Probably because their wage demands were too high, but that is the price you pay for survival isn’t it? So, who do we blame? Moxey? I think the club needs to come clan about its “plan” and what it is really doing. If the aim is to bounce up and down for a few seasons rather than give it a proper go this season then please tell us that. But that message doesn’t sell season tickets. My expectation, was fuelled by statements from the club, and made me think we were more than a yo yo club. Something needs to be said by the club very quicky, you can not hoodwink the fans for long ……………………….

EVERYBODY THAT HAS COMMENTED THANK YOU
THE REASON WHY WE ARE NOT DOING WELL = NEVER HAD THE SAME TEAM DUE TO MM MESSING WITH THE TEAM.
MM IF YOU READ THIS WAKE UP WHY DO YOU BUY A PLAYER 6’8″AND PUT HIM ON THE BENCH YOUR NOTHING BUT A NUFF NUFF,HOW CAN ANYBODY GET USED TO PREM WHEN YOU DONT PLAY THEM YOU BOUGHT THEM & THEN YOU DONT PLAY THEM,DOESNT MAKE SENSE (DO YOU HAVE ANY SENSE McCARTHY)

119. BenBristol – I completely disagree mate. The reason we did not get Michael Owen, Richard Dunne, Sami Hypia is because they went to Manchester Utd, Villa and a Bayern Leverkusen in EUROPE, money probably had a factor but these players want to play for top clubs, we showed ambition by going for them. Money played a factor for smaller name players such as Scott Dann who chose us over Blues and everything was agreed he turned up for a medical and blues called his agent and offered him 6k more A WEEK than both clubs did originally. Is a player from Coventry big enough to dictate a deal to us? NO. Hence why we didnt match it.

You’re not up to the job Mick – just GO!

Laughingwolf – there is still no excuse for not sticking to the correct and well publicised paln of bringing in prem experience – we need to know why this did not happen. Jan will be too late and Mick doesn’t know who to play where and when, without confusing him with more options.
I think Moxey and Mick are to blame for this shambles and it’s an insult that Mick can make the comments he has. An example to empahsise Ben Bristols point is the issuing of Colins a 4 year contract – in Micks words to prevent Prem Clubs getting him. It’s time for Mick and Moxey to go.

The 3 M’s, MARY-MUNGO-MIDGE, could do no worse, but would at least be watchable !!!

10) You are derided because you are a negative so called supporter of the club who has probably only been going to games for the last few years. Zubar, Milijas and Doyle are good enough and Surman is one for the future!
We are not dead and buried yet but could be soon. We need to change the team and must spend in January whatever.

If you believe the papers and we are buying Robert Hulse then we really are in a poor position if this is the level of player we are attracting plus the fact that 3million for a player in the Championship who’s team are in the bottom half of the league is shocking. Senderos from Arsenal is up for loan why are we not trying for these sort of players. I would rather take Wellbeck from Man United that Hulse. I personally think if we don’t take full points from Bolton and Burnley we will be bottom at Christmas and needing an Alan Curbishley miracle.

Brummie Rob, You are a very loyal fan ,home and away every game for many years, and in my opinion that gives you the right to be a tad bias. But surely you saw on Saturday the Bluenoses outclassed us in defence midfield and attack.Other than Doyle we have no one who will trouble most Prem sides. They have let us down in the transfer market. But of course I hope I am wrong and you are right.

Brummie Rob, Sorry mate,I was obviously a bit punch drunk after the match on Sunday not Saturday.

Yes mate Jarvis on the right.
The reason I went for Edwards over Milijas is Edwards will be more physical which will be needed against Bolton & he should get forward more, also Surman is a good ball player & hopefully woill help us retain the ball.
74, Dingley
Take your point but as we only have our squad to pick from so that’s your lot, now if I was being a smartarse I’d just put my dream team in & that would probably beat brazil!!!!
So why don’t you stop trying to be clever & let us ridicule your selection???

Get a backbone. This is a relatively weak premier league. I can still see us finishing above 3 out of Pompey, Bolton, Blackburn, West Ham, Burnley, Hull, Wigan ,Everton, Birmingham … BUT we must restore confidence soon, starting with Bolton.

Good call for Houllier-he would be great as Director of football with Paul Ince as Manager.
Clipboard Connor could check the gas meters.

How much more of this are we going to take ???
No wonder the last 8 storys heve not allowed us to comment… Got Dave Edwards talking tactics…. is he the manager ???
Got Moxey pretending he can’t sleep – try counting your money fatty
Got thick mick saying everyone benefitted from selling Mark Davies… err… how did wolves benefit apart from more money in the bank for Morgan ??
As for the Sylvan scoring story – yeah… in a cake shop – never seen a fatter striker at this level – disgrace.
We were promised quality players and that we wouldn’t do an albion – at least they went down with thier dignity intact – I’d settle for that right now.
Been a STH for 15 years – but this is my last one with this lot in charge…. get rid or lose us !!!

“I was happy with the players we got–and still am,” said McCarthy. “I was really delighted with what we brought in and it’s for us not to rue what we might, or could, or should have done, but make it work with what we’ve got.”
.. and MM baby, you are where in the division? He surely has to go.
who at wolves has more premier experience than most? MM thats who and he has still only managed to win 1 home game!!! The basis of a good team is a settled team … we haven’t played the same side twice! letting your side take thrashings even to arsenal and chelsea is great for moral! we are now in a relegation battle … surely thats been the case from day one. I won’t rant and rave at the players, it’s the mad rantings from the touch line of man who’s out of his depth and too self obsessed to realise it, that are half the problem, the players are only following orders. mm picks the side, chooses the tactics, carries the can.

134 Spudulike, would that be the same Paul Ince that has not seen a win in five or six League One games in a row at the mighty Milton Keynes Dons? The Wolves fans don’t take to managers that don’t win every game.
Maybe Curbishley? He walked at West Ham because they sold two players out of absolute financial necessity, and then sued the club he showed such loyalty to, and took a further two million pounds from that struggling club.
Either sound exactly what we need. …………. NOT!!!!! Who else? O’ Dreary? Southgate? Shearer? No? WHO THEN????
Other teams’ fans thought sacking the manager mid term would help.
Newcastle with Big Sam. Result? relegation.
Birmingham with Bruce. Result? Relegation.
Derby with Jewell. Result? Relegation.
The only successful change that I recall saved a doomed team from threatened relegation was Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth. Please let me know, firstly who is realistically in that sort of class, secondly is available, and thirdly would come to Wolves currently?
I could go on, but it doesn’t matter. I am only a happy clapper. If I knock the board and management, I don’t need to answer realistically as to alternatives. All I need to do is spout drivel, hate the mangaer, not REALLY support the team, and the sheep will follow blindly echoing my “Sack Mick, Sack Moxey and Sack Morgan.” May I remind some, if not most on here that supporters SUPPORT, Demolition men DEMOLISH, and whingers WHINGE. The latter two offer no SUPPORT. They make stupid statements without considering the consequences or alternatives.
All you negative knockers, please tell me realistically who is available, good enough, experienced enough, and would come if Mick McCarthy went? My bet is that there is no-one that fulfils all four of those.

Many Thanks for the Ingrish lesson there Brerton
Here’s a few more.. Knockers Knock, Plonkers Plonk, and Wolverhampton Wanderers Fans “Wander” what happenned to all the promises made at the end of last season.
They “Wander” where the premiership experience went, when Brum seemed to have much less trouble pinning down players.
They “Wander” why we have a massivley different starting line up just about every game
They “Wander” why Curbishley can motivate his (Less talented) side to greatness when all Mick can do is fap about on the touchline
They “Wander” why we dont have any dedicated players in positions. Its a damn melee out there.
They “Wander” if this transfer is going to be any different to last.. actually, no, they dont wonder at all
Its frustration brerton that’s all it is, and at the moment very few have faith in mick mccarthy and i dont blame them.

I think most people are upset with Mick because it was his job to get the players up for the blues game. Clearly he didn’t. He made all the noise before the game how important to match was and then we watched a team playing like it was a friendly match. He’s done the same thing about the Bolton match and our captain has now joined in.Words mean nothing its what we do on the pitch, so all of you shut up and give 110% tomorrow.

For the game on Saturday.
1. Play actual full backs, not centre halves. Even Ward.
2. Milijas has to come in for Edwards. He made a marked impact on Sunday
3. SEB needs a rest. Keough has to come back in
Let’s face it, it can’t get any worse than the performance on Sunday.
Should we sack MM? No. Consistancy always pays off in the end. Mick’s first year was a revelation. The 2nd year, Wolves fans were calling for his head, as we expected to at least equal the year before. The board stuck with MM and the 3rd year we won the league (fairly easily in the end). I’m glad the board stuck with MM then, and i hope they do now.
We are having a poor run of form, and we are low on confidence. All the real fans on here have seen how well a MM Wolves team can play. We just aren’t there at the moment. But we will be, and we won’t go down.
Keep the faith.

Sorry the only players that he has bought is milijas doyle halford nd zubar. But hes saying about prem experience shame we aint got sum well why the hell hasn’t he got some bloody prem experience. The players except for the four i have mentioned are squad players and spending 18 million wisely? As if Birmingham spent around the same and look who they have bought in thats what we should have done matt Derbyshire Darren Bent Tosic on loan and a load others with prem experience and potential in the premiership.

Brereton Wolf. A well argued post with pleny of logic.I personally have not called for Mick to go,but you must admit
historically a change of manager can have a motivating effect ,which has improved fortunes at lots of clubs including Wolves;remember John Barnwell. Also it would be a strange state of affairs if most fans are not concerned at the present set of circumstances. Relegation this season will mean four relegations out of our last four seasons in top flight football. As a Wolves fan of nearly 50 years,I am ashamed of such a record, and yes I went to one of the games against Chorley. In those days we had nothing but now they are wasting opportunities.

The trouble with Mick is he,s to negative, these are young players and they need talking up, this is the same team that played fast attacking football last season and won the league. Now lets look at micks negatives, narrowing the pitch, whats that say to his players were not good enough to play so lets make it harder for the opposition, then the pompey game what did mick say they got to win their first game somewhere i hope its not here, i think the players lost before they went on the pitch, were never gonna win against chelsea, arsenal etc i mean whats that all about. Then the blues game what did mick say, oh they have bowyer carr ferguson and we just dont have that experience, what does that say to our lads, go out lads give it a go but were not good enough. I,m sorry mick but you being negative must rub off on to the team and thats why we are where we are.
