Wolves’ Kightly out for eight weeks

Tuesday 1st December 2009, 1:00PM GMT.

Michael KightlyWolves have suffered a major blow with the news that winger Michael Kightly will be out for up to eight weeks.

The key wide man, who came off after barely half an hour in the Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against Birmingham, needs an operation on the ankle he damaged early on in the second half.

Boss Mick McCarthy said: “Michael went to see the specialist today – he’s had a scan and it looks like he needs an operation. It looks like he will be out for six to eight weeks.

“Looking at it, we think he maybe got away with it lightly because he rolled it quite badly. Michael was really down about it yesterday, but now that he knows what he has to go through he has brightened up today.”

The news is the latest blow to hit Wolves as they focus on survival after three successive defeats which has left them four points from safety, as they prepare for another hugely important game against Bolton this Saturday.

McCarthy admits Kightly’s injury has struck a bitter blow both to player and club.

The manager said: “Michael felt great as well, so it’s a real shame for us and for him. This is a key player we are talking about and we have not had him at all playing at his full potential for us this season.

“If fact Sunday was the first time we have seen him any where near that. I’m disappointed for him as well, because we thought he was somewhere near his best.”

McCarthy revealed Kightly’s latest injury is unrelated to the bone spur problem that saw him miss five months of the season in 2007/08 and the club will be hoping the winger’s latest injury worry is nowhere near as lengthy or as serious.

Injury misfortune is unfortunately nothing new for Kightly, who missed the promotion run-in with hip and foot injuries that kept him out until pre-season.

The 23-year-old former England under 21 international had only just returned to full training again last week, after McCarthy initially wanted to give him extra time to get fully fit because of discomfort in his knees, only for a new treatment to work wonders and pave the way for several days’ quality work on the training ground.

Maybe this is a chance for Surman to get a run out. Although I can’t imagine he is any good! Feeling really down now. Carlos Edwards?

The only blow to us Wolves fans is that Mick McCarthy is still in a job.

    MICK OUT!!

Our problem stems from the top and that is MM. He is not capable of working at this level; tactically he is inept, he can’t motivate the players, he does not know what team to put out, he keeps playing players out of position, he relys on his favourites regardless of form and the list goes on…..

Mr MORGAN please do all of us Wolves fans a favour and get rid of Thick Mick now or we are going down!

I am a big fan of MM but am beginning to wonder if this is a step to far for his talents. Kites just aint cut the mustard in the prem but to be fair he hasn’t had a decent run. I thought the keeper played well and hope he continues in goal but think that the full backs need to get forward and the we need to banks of four solid defence please. Look at Stoke they cant score either but they don’t concede as easy as us. Up the Wolves, come on Mick lets go down fighting at least, a roar from the wolves not a whimper!!!

They all seem clueless at the moment and its in danger of becoming depressing similar to our last fleeting spell in the top flight.

I get tired of reading our players saying how they dont fear the big guns, to then only get trounced by them. Then say things like Kightly will be back and show us all – he certainly did that!. Talking about the must win games and then not turning up for them.

I am trying very hard to be optimistic about us this season but our players need to stand up and show the fans something and very quickly.

Too many so called talented young players are not stepping up SEB, Kightly, Jarvis to name but a few.

Confidence is severely damaged I reckon and sadly I can see us bottom for Christmas.

So Kightly is now out for eight weeks! Where is the backup for Kightly McCarthy? Oh sorry my mistake we have Edwards and Halford with their searing pace and quality on the ball!
We are a complete and utter shambles from top to bottom!
People keep going on about Carlos Edwards but he is rubbish. We should have got Jerome Thomas who we actually had on trial but let him join Albion! We could have got Thomas for free who is a very good winger but instead chose to sign Halford for over £2 million and Surman who has hardly kicked a ball. I’d like to hear what Morgan and Moxey’s views are on the current shambles but they seem to have vanished! I’m now dreading the weekend.Imagine what midfield McCarthy will come up with on Saturday?
    My team for Saturday;

15 When you put Jarvis and Millijas on the wings, who is going to get the ball to them?

    Henry….No
    Castillo…No
    Berra….No
    Craddock….No

There is no one in the central defensive/midfield positions who can shift the ball. So it goes long.

    It’s tactical self destruction.

Martinez at Wigan is being described in the media as “brave” cos he keeps playing the right style.

Mick isn’t brave enough to drop Henry, play Millijas in the centre and shift the ball about to feet so the wide men get decent service on the ground.

Also centre halves…defensively Craddock, Berra, Stearman, Zubar & Mancienne (who needs to sort his head out) are probably all about the same. But we are crying out for someone to carry the ball our…Craddock needs to be dropped and Stearman put in. When Mancienne sorts his head out, he should play too…he wins the ball high up the pitch and sets us off on attacks.

Again Mick aint brave enough to do this.

There was no contingency in place it seems for our crocked supposed most talented player. Well on to far more important matters than one bloke and that is our beloved Club. As I said again if we don’t beat Bolton on Saturday MM has to do the noble thing if he cares bugger all for the Club and resign (even if we draw). We just need fresh impetus before its too late but in my heart of hearts I think we are realistically down already.
Sammy Chung was sacked in Nov. of the 78/79 season when we were only third from bottom, in came Johnny Barnwell, we stayed up and had that wonderful 1979-80 season after – aah what happy times!! Unlike now when we are all hurting.

Our midfield are the main problem and losing Kightly will not help. They do not protect the defence and do not create anything for the strikers. Well said 4. He does throw himself into tackles – which is good to see in some respect, but quite often he comes out 2nd best. As for Sunday – what a disaster – no fight at all. The only glimmer of a spark was Ward’s return. (I’ll probably get slated for that!) the rest were next to useless. Blues were never put under any pressure and should have won by more than the 1 goal. It was our lowest home gate this season & I guarantee that it will be lower on saturday! There has to be changes against notloB. SEB has to be dropped. Give the Hoff a start with Doyle. Milijas must start – the only guy who can hit a good cross more than once a match. Thought it a bit harsh to drop Hennessey although he did have a mare against Chelsea. I agree with others that Halford ain’t much use other than his chucks into the box. Problem is there is no one big enough to get on the end of em. At least give Surman a go or bring back Keogh.

After Sunday’s performance I can’t see where our next goal is coming from let alone our next point, unless there are changes in the personal and the team on the pitch show some commitment.

Thanks for that Bill Coventry but if you can’t see the difference in tactical capabilities between MM and Fergie then I think you have been hitting the sherry a little too early for the festive season.

A couple of my best mates are Blue noses and they constantly complain that McLeish is tactically inept and yet after 30 minutes of Sunday’s match our illustrious leader had already had to make a sub and switch around our full backs to cope with the Blues. So if McLeish is rubbish tactically what does that make McCarthy? He is clueless!

We won then Championship at a canter playing attacking football with two out and out wingers so the first thing he does when we get promoted is narrow the pitch by 4 metres – stroke of genius and if you answer that by saying ‘well it was to stop better midfields dominating us’ then it isn’t working is it cos we’ve still only won 1 of our 7 home games and only scored 5 goals!

don’t know how true it is but on Molineux Mix web site the rumour is he will be in place in the next few weeks

I hope they are right, he certainly has the premiership experience we need

Some of you happy clappers are as thick as Mick, if we packed 100k fans into the ground to get behind the team we still couldn’t turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.

62 Absolutely spot. What has MM always said about buying players at any level? Quote ” I will only bring players to the club that are better than those we have and that will improve the squad!”
Does this apply to Halford? NO
Does this apply to Surman? NO
Does this applt to Meirhoffer so far? NO
Does this apply to Miljas so far? NO
Doyle & Castillo are ok – Zuber jury still out.
We need another Ince, Rae and Irwin to steady the ship.

Greeno, what did we expect ?

well we expected at the very least to compete against the teams promoted with us – the teams we had the jump on in transfer close – instead we’ve been well beaten on and off the field.

This may be the ‘high’ standard you set yourself but i think it is nothing short of pathetic.

I agree we do need another Ince, Rae and Irwin to steady the ship. There lies the problem though, thick Mick doesn’t want anyone challenging him, these type of players have opinions and Mick won’ like that so the chances of bringing in players like that are slim. Just look at what happened to Roy Keane when he challenged his judgement

    63 – Spot On.

Experience was and still is needed, and comes at a price. I’m afraid, as in life, you get what you pay for. If you don’t pay you don’t get and unfortunately for us premier quality players cost a lot.
Who’ll come now in January if we have do have ambition to spend premier money?

71, I have read the Houllier thing as he is friends with Morgan it does seem to make sense. Mick has done very well getting us to where we are with 12 pro’s to start with. If we beat Bolton on Saturday the mood will lift and we then have to beat Burnley. Spurs and United away are just a case of giving a good account of ourselves.

We could do worse than give Hemmings a run out. If anyone saw Swindon in the cup and how he went at their defence………… I havnt seen a player with that much pace or guile this season at Wolves. Give him a go. Too young Mick?? We arnt exactly doing very well are we.

    WHO R WBA?????????

    62. I agree entirely. One thing that seems to be coming through now from the above comments and 300 plus after the Brum debacle is this. Mr Mcarthy is at best a championship manager with a championship side who he has added to by MORE championship players. I would also say that with the number of Irish player in the squad and looking at the performances of them ALL. The only team he MIGHT be able to compete against is RIVER DANCE and even that is debatable.

I haven’t called for anybody’s head ……. yet. But, boy, am I hurting after Sunday’s debacle. And I am looking for a dramatic improvement this Saturday. What is more I don’t want anyone suggesting that we can’t get anything from the upcoming away games. (Isn’t the F.A. Cup renowned for upsets? People wouldn’t turn up if it were otherwise – so let’s assume that we can get upsets in the Premier and give it a go. No defeatism, Mick.) And if anyone is coming in to shore up the management, let it be sooner rather than later. Time is running out.

23 First and last time I saw man mountain John de Wolf he had two staps around his knees. I suggest his 100% was turning around when he’d been turned by any opposition forwards; and the 10% was when he picked himself up after falling. (Please excuse me if I’m doing him a disservice)

One win and things will look brighter. I said we would have to score two to beat Blues and I doubted whether we could. Scoring twice is a must or we will flounder.
Ebanks Blake is not sufficiently mobile in the premiership – no player of his stature scores regularly in the premiership and that should say something. I was hoping for keogh to come good with goals but he hasn’t. Doyle needs support which he isn’t getting. Kites is never going to play more than half the games in any season at this level.
We did not buy premiership experience. Newcastle’s Butt could have been our Bowyer or Jimmy Bullard – experienced modfielders who tackle and who can play.

I hope and believe Mick will pull us out of the mire but I must confess to feeling less supportive after he was reported saying that he was happy with his squad at the start of the season. It has always been a deficient/inexperienced squad requiring all the new signings to ‘come off’. I worry about the Bolton game because they are a team which knows how to stay up and have players that can nick the one goal it will probably take.. Good luck anyway lads.
