CONSERVATIVE 24 DHA long-established Black Country social club is getting ready to celebrate its 100th birthday.

Tipton Conservative Club is inviting its 300 members to a party at the venue to mark the milestone on Saturday. Mr John Treadwell, chairman of the club, said: “The club opened 100 years ago in December and it was a Conservative club which was transformed from an old mill.

“It would have been a typical social club with young Conservative members. The people who went in the club in them days had to be a Conservative, but things have changed since.”

Now the Union Street venue hosts parties, wedding receptions and Christenings. Function rooms also host talks by local historians and Tipton Civic Society.

“The club upstairs is for members and their guests to have a drink and we hold the Tiptonian of the Year here,” said Mr Treadwell. “The Rotary Club also use the club to have their meetings and meals here.”

Mr Treadwell, from Heath Close in Horseley Heath, took over as chairman around eight years ago.

The 66-year-old who works part-time as a managing director of a plant and gear lifting firm and lives with wife Linda, also 66, said: “It’s a nice club and we would like to see it carry on for another 100 years.”
