All-out assault needed for Hughes

Tuesday 1st December 2009, 11:40AM GMT.

mark hughesWalsall captain Mark Hughes has admitted the team must launch an all-out promotion assault to keep their season alive.

The Saddlers head to Yeovil tonight to resume League One hostilities after their FA Cup exit at Brentford on Saturday.

It left them with just the league to play for and they could gatecrash the top six with a win and favourable results elsewhere.

Hughes warns the ninth-placed Sclub need to muster all their strength for a challenge.

He said: “It’s the league or nothing. All our eggs are in one basket and we’ve got to have one big push now.

“It’s going to be tough over Christmas with a lot of games, we haven’t got the biggest of squads so we have to stick together and try to get through it.”

“It could be a lot worse, there are teams in worse positions than us and a good result could put us in the top six. We’ve got to look upwards now.”

The 22-year-old knows, if the Saddlers have any play-off aspirations they must take three points at Huish Park.

He said: “It’s winnable and we know if we want to be up there at the end of the season we have to go and get three points.

“We’ve been on a good run with just one defeat in six games, so we’ve got to take the confidence into the league.”

Rhys Weston should recover from the cramp which forced him off at Griffin Park, while Jamie Vincent and Richard Taundry are in contention following calf and hamstring problems.

Boss Chris Hutchings threatened to axe his players following their FA Cup no show and Hughes insists they must forget about the 1-0 defeat.

The defender said: “When you get beaten you want to get it out of the system and put it right. We can’t let it get to us too much and must think about all the good things we’ve done. We’ve seen in the past we’ve had more positives than negatives, we’ve just got to get our heads down.

“Yeovil aren’t a bad team, especially at home, so it’s going to be a hard game.”

wouldn’t it have been an idea to have an “all out assault” at Brentford last Saturday as well?
