We let the fans down admits Ward

Monday 30th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.

stephenwardStraight-talking Wolves defender Stephen Ward admits the players let manager Mick McCarthy and the fans down after losing to Birmingham.

The team produced their worst first-half performance at Molineux this season in the 1-0 defeat to Blues yesterday.

Alex McLeish’s side are now eight points clear of their opponents, who remain second bottom and four points from safety after their third successive defeat.

The half-time appearance of Ward provided a rare highlight, as the Irishman made his comeback in his first senior game since August 22 after recovering from cartilage surgery.

But the 24-year-old had mixed feelings after his 100th game for the club.

He said: “We know we let the gaffer and the fans down, because we’re the ones who wear the shirts and these are the games we need to win if we’re going to stay in the Premier League.

“We never performed and we weren’t good enough. We need to reflect on this game and talk through what we did, but then put it to the back of our minds.

“We have to look at ourselves because it’s the 25-30 players in our squad who are going to keep us in this league. We know the first half performance wasn’t good enough, and although we improved in the second half, our overall performance wasn’t good enough.”

Ward believes he is ready to play a full game, despite only an hour in the reserves before yesterday.

He said: “I felt good and if you can play 60 minutes, the adrenalin gets you through the last 30. We’ll see how training goes. Hopefully I can add something and contribute from now to the end of the season.

“The knee felt good, but the adrenaline of playing in a game helped because I’ve been feeling it a bit in training, although it’s nothing to stop me from playing.”

Well unless we start winning away at Liverpool, Man Utd etc we’re as good as down already because we can’t do anything at home against the good or bad teams in the league.

5 points at home from West Ham, Portsmouth, Villa, Blues, Fulham and Hull is a joke.

How have a team who went up as champions been reduced to what we saw yesterday? Moxey, Mick, anybody?

I disagree young Stephen I feel you and the fans have been let down by the management, square pegs round holes. But I guess players will say things like that as they want to be in the team the next game. Come on lads give us a goal or two and three points with it, and please Mr Morgan get involved and make some tough decisions open that cheque book and Moxey’s 25 Mil in the bank too.

I wa calling for him to come on after 20mins, but he had no help from Jarvis who is useless, my lad who is 15 said why does he run round like a headless chicken.

The main problem lies with the board Moxey made a recorded statement that we would not do an Albion so what have we done brought a group of players with no premiership experience which is exactly what they did, he also stated we had to get the cheque book out well i think our purchases are almost exactly the same as the Albion, false promises in fact now i believe they were lies to sell bums on seats.

I thought it a bit insulting when the advert came on at half time asking people to buy half season tickets lol

MM though tactically whe has the full backs stoped over lapping to create space or a centre half running with the ball, yesterday was embarasing the 2 lads up front must have thought whats this all about give to the goalie then launch it 60 yards to 2 giant centre halves unbelievable. Watched the Chelsea game afterwards and who made the first 2 goals a full back. Last year it worked this year we look scared.

I fear the worst but the board really need to look at themselves and say did we really do enough.

The team AND management got it all wrong yesterday.

Our record in derby games is appalling since MM has been at the healm, and he was a ‘blood and guts’ type manager, but we need to learn to ‘get into em’.

We will never out play any teams in this division, especially if Kightly and Jarvis are not going to take any men on.

We might aswel forget the passing along the back, it’s muck and bullets time now. Play the Hoff if we are going to hoof it up all the time.

Our defence was under constant pressure because we had wide men who cant mix it, and Henry and Edwards were powder puff. The only option for the defenders was the big hoof.

Get Nolan and Smith in from Newcastle for our midfield! Stuff the wage cap. It could cost us £40 million quid!!!!!

It really is starting to show that Mick is tactically inept. At a ower level Mick seemed to be able to make a purse out of a sows ear. He did well with Ireland, but really he only carried through the good work laid down by Jack Charlton. He managed the impossible getting Sunderland & Wolves promoted, only to look out of his depth on both occasions.

Everyone must remember that we got promoted with a very poor centre midfield, with no creation. If it was not for the wingers, we would of been mid table.

Keough seems to have dropped out of favour, I would bring him back in place of Ebanks-Blake, as at least he gave some creation up forward. If Mick has any chance of keep his job he must stick with a settled team & work his socks off at 3 main things. The centre of defence & the lack of ability to defend the goal. The creativity in midfield & the right pairing up front. Play to players strengths, not the strength of the opposition, for in doing that we lose our own game plan, that is why we have looked bereft of ideas of late as we are not playing to our strengths. Merley just being by standers watching the opposition dictate the game.

Sadly I feel Mick has one gamne left in him and I feel he should walk if he does not show the early season promise in the next game. Remember, we have bad blood with Bolton, especially after their poaching of Davies & previous playoff dramas. It really is like a local derby. Let’s just hope things turn around fast, but I doubt it.

Statistics show the first goal is crucial in this league and we are finding out the hard way. Blues got the goal and then defended superbly all over the pitch to stop us building up play. Credit must go to them for that.

Until we play someone in the middle though who actually wants the ball to feet (Milijas? Castillo?) we havent a prayer. The back 4 were often left with no choice but to play thre ball long due to Henry / Edwards hiding.

We lost 1-0 to Bham, it’s our worst performance to date in the EPL, we haven’t lost 4-0 to them, or 3-0 or even 2-0, we all know we played poorly, so considering Bham are on a roll and we are having major issues and it was a derby game, I think we did bl00dy well to lose by 1 goal! Yes we need to get it together and very quickly too. 24 games left, we are not 9 or so points adrift (God forbid) – it’s do-able. MM knows we are all looking at him, so I think we will surprise a few teams on the run up to Xmas. Come on guys at least we aren’t still in the Fizz Pop league. What a waste of £38 – I wish I had stayed in bed like most of the first team did!

I’m no fan of Ward but he put in one of the better performance on the day. Berra and Mancienne were a joke, Edwards is simply not good enough and if anyone thinks the rest of this team are good enough to stay in the Prem they are seeing something I cant.

We have wasted too much money on players that do not even play, and too many of last years team have not stepped up. For example does anyone think SEB is a worse player than Fuller at Stoke, yet he doesn’t seem interested.

Not enough money spent, no chance of attracting better players in January (when we are bottom of the league), and on what I’ve seen if I was the owner I wouldn’t trust MM to waste my cash either.

It’s never easy coming up, but we have lost a great opportunity to establish ourselves in the Prem given some of the other dross. Wolves look like a worse team then Hull, Burnley, Portsmouth, Bolton, Wigan and Blues – all sides I looked at last summer and kidded myself we would finish above come the end of the season!

A very honest comment from Stephen Ward, pity Mick isn’t honest enough to admit he and clipboard aren’t up to it. Tacticaly and Team selection wise they are inept. Before the happy naive clappers retaliate about these comments they need to realise they are the minority. I have supported Wolves for many years and I despair with the rubbish served up. It was a real Sunday league performance against a B-ham side who are nothing special but at least have a method to their play. Our plan was obviously boot the ball as far upfield as possible onto the heads of Johnson and Dann. As the pressure continues to build MM will no doubt start his usual rantings about the fans. Unfortunately with Steve Morgan (alias Mr Anonymous) and Jez (Mick is the man for us) Moxey we are only going one way and it certainly isn’t upwards. We need a change of management and training staff now. MM has taken us as far as he can. Now before the happy clappers tell me to keep away I will be there against Bolton regardless.

Do that if there is a Iwelumo or Vokes but not to that pair. Milijas must start against Bolton – the only one who shows any real quality when passing. Bit harsh to drop Hennessey I thought, lets see if Mick’s prepared to make changes elsewhere.

Seems to poke holes in the “didn’t spend enough” theory. Brum bought experience, we bought youth and potential; we now know which was the wise choice!

My mind wandered to walking my dog, then the fullbacks changed places, and a little variety was added to the sweep of the pendulum, until at long last the match was over, the heavens opened and a good dog walking day was lost. Wardy, believe me, YOU’ve got nothing to apologise for, so don’t. It’s no surprise that as the best player in a Gold shirt yesterday, you’ve been sent out to address the fans. Maybe when asked to perform this onerous task you should have passed the mantle across the dressing room to Greg Halford, or maybe he’s busy with his screw driver mending his seat in the dug out after putting a boot through it!? If only he showed the same passion on the pitch as off it.

    The neighboring story on this site may be of interest to you Steven, it goes;

    WOLVES

Wolves have been linked with a £500,000 move for Championship club Preston’s young defender Eddie Nolan.

    BLUES

Birmingham are set to make a big-money bid for Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

Says it all doesn’t it really?

No money, No ambition, No idea, No chance.

Get out while you can in January Steven, you never know, at another club you might even get a game up front!? – Now there’s a thought!

This thing about “Premier League Experience” is a complete red herring. Reading went into the Premier League with next to no Premier League experience in their entire squad and finished top half. It’s not Premier League experience we need, it’s Premier League quality. There’s plenty of Premier eague quality players outside of the Premier League, both in the Championship and abroad. Look at Blues yesterday, Johnson and Dann were signed from Cardiff and Coventry. No Prem exprience there but they coped with us easily and are keeping plenty of clean sheets in the Prem. The fact is we have players that either aren’t ready to play in the Prem yet (Dave Edwards, out of is depth against Bowyer and Ferguson) or never will be good enough (Jody Craddock, a few headed goals and some credit for that masked over the fact that this guy is not a Prem standard defender and, as nice a guy as he is, never will be). It says a lot when you realise that Stephen Ward is clearly our best defender on the pitch. Rant over….

Always said as soon as we reached the Prem, get a decent manager in. You can see from MM tactics that he has not got a clue, players simply not good enough, most on very long contracts which gives no incentive to make too much of an effort

I hate to admit it, but I really don’t think Mick is a Premiership Manager. His tactics and quality of players that he has brought in, is just not working and the proof is in the pudding. I hate being negative, but I am convinced the rot has started to set in. The performance yesterday was just dreadful and it was fortunate that Birmingham didn’t play much better than us – if it had been a stronger Premiership club we would have been slaughtered! Steve Morgan hasn’t got to where he is today, without making the right decisons…I have a very strong feeling that Mick will be shown the door within the next few weeks.

Having sat through a replay of our insipid performance last week against Chelsea, I was anticipating a better display on Sunday. I missed the game live but got to read many reports and listen to MM’s interview on Sky and decided I could not subject myself to yet another poor performance by watching the recorded match. All of the media, including the Manager, were agreed that our performance was unacceptable!!!

MM made some really daft and condescending comments about Birmingham before the game to the effect that they were no Arsenal or Chelsea and making a dismissive claim that they had “some creativity”. Well, they clearly do have some creativity whereas we have, to date, shown none!!!

It seems to me that the management has to make immediate changes – if the players could not get up for the Brummies then it is clear that the plot has been lost. A new Manager/Coach needs to come in NOW to assess the squad, make tactical adjustments and have a chance to determine who can be brought in in the January transfer window that canmake a difference – although it will be very difficult to attract anyone given our track record. Accepting relegation surely cannot be acceptable – this Club needs to be in the top flight. We may have 25 million in the bank now but relegation would prove costly and I really doubt we would come straight back up. The Championship is a lottery.

My vote, assuming the man wants the job, would be Steve Coppell. Intelligent, and given to minimising his comments to the press ( much needed at the moment),Coppell has experience and can command respect from the players. Something has to change and quickly!!!

Let’s face it – we are in a worse position than the league table shows. We have played some of our so-called closest rivals at home and have taken just one point from those matches. BUT the position is not hopeless.
If we can buy say 3 Premiership hardened players in key positions in January and the manager can inspire some of the existing players to raise their game we CAN escape the drop.
However, if Morgan and Moxey wouldn’t pay Premiership wages last summer what makes you think they will now, even if we could find the players prepared to come to a club at the bottom.
AND is Mick the man to inspire players of Championship quality to play above themselves. Well, he hasn’t done it so far!
So, we can escape but I think it’s all a dream.

I think MM is now on borrowed time, why did we play 4 centre backs in defence?? You can not get away with it at this level.

We have enough full backs, Foley, Elokobi, Friend, Malone. Elokobi I can see why he is not playing but friend and Malone must be worth a go.

Also all we did against blues was play long ball, so please explain why the tallest man in premiership history is on the bench!!!?? SEB and Doyle are wasted they have no service. Torres or Rooney could be up front for us it makes no difference as we create nothing.

We have gone backwards since winning that championship, we played with no fear. And all of a sudden we are light rabbits in car headlights. Every press conference from MM is negative worrying about other teams and building them up. Why not concentrate on us for a change?? And stop worrying about what anyone else is doing??

I suppose the players have to respond to questions from the press – but really we don’t need to hear any words from them right now. Actions speak louder than words and it’s their actions on the pitch that we are looking at right now, critically. A few words from Steve Morgan might be interesting however. As for Mick, I’d love to know what he really thinks about what he has been allowed financially from the Board. Wage ceilings, etc. can’t have helped him in his quest for players. He is a proud man and astute I believe; his career matters to him as well as his standing among his peers – and he will be hurting right now. The question is how much is the situation down to him and how much is it down to the Board who may have put restraints on his ambitions?

I personally don’t blame the players.to be fair they always give there best but majority of our sqaud are championship players playing in the premiership. The blame lies fully with the manager and his limited maagerial nouse.
I applaud mick for getting us up to the prem but i just believe he is good enough to keep us up in the prem. His stubborness will be his downfall.
We are so predictable as we lack qaulity all over the park and constantly play players out of position which you can’t get away with in the prem.I felt sorry for greg halford yesterday when the crowd cheered when subbed.it’s not his fault mick played him out of position.he’s a full back so play him there.
Our lack of buying premiership qaulity experience players is now coming back to haunt us and until mick starts to admit to himself that the likes of,henry, edwards, jarvis, craddock etc just aren’t good enough for the premiership then we’ll go down.I don’t blame these players as they give their all but bottom line is they just ain’t good enough.
Problem is we need to do some serious business in january but who’s going want to come to us if were rooted in bottom 3.
I have never sung the super mick song as i think he’s been disrespectful to us wolves fans in the past and although he’s got us to the prem i just believe he’s out of his depth in the premiership.I would replace asap to give a new man a chance to get his own players in jan and give us a fighting chance before its to late. MM is not the problem at Molinuex its the board – FACT! We were the innovators of world football now all i hear is we need to do a Hull. Pathetic!

Its obvious we need quality all over and we’ve got it. SEB doesn’t score tap ins neither does Doyle. Foley, Kites, Ward (got ot give him a chance up front again), Henry come on we love these blokes they’re our team they’ve just lost their way abit. They need leadership and direction on and off the pitch.

The Molineux board’s mission statement is very clear –
Step 1 – Win promotion and put £50+m in the bank hence ring fencing Steve Morgan’s initial investment!
Step 2 – Spend minimum in transfer market and fool fans into buying season tickets and put more money in the bank.
Step 3 – Pay below average wages, increase capactiy and put even more money in the bank.
Step 4 – Be in bottom 3 at christmas say its not worth spending any obvious hence keeping money in the bank.
Step 5 – Get relegated, sack manager and use him as scape goat for poor season. Put parachute payments into bank.
Step 6 – Get in new manager tell him there’s no money in bank and that he’s got to use free transfers and loans but expect promotion of sleeping giant etc,etc…..
Step 7 – 5 or 6 seasons in Championship, sell players bought on cheap to make profit when parachute payments stop.
Step 8 – Sack manager again for not winning promtion. Get big name manager in raise expectations, give him a fraction of the money the club has made over the last 7 or so years.
Step 9 – Win promotion to Premier League. Bank another £50+m, give manager peanuts expect world bank lots of money!
Step 10 – See step 2 oh and count all the money!!!!

From my little survival league, based on a targeted 37 points and grading home/away form and teams in 3 different categories, I have the following:

    Portsmouth -7
    Wolves -5
    Hull -2
    Bolton 0
    West Ham 1
    Blackburn 2

Anything that we pick up away from home in our next three games (Spurs/Manure/Liverpool) is a bonus. But even if we picked up 6 points at home from the next two, we’d only get back to 3 behind schedule. assuming nothing from the next three away games.

What really dissappoints me is the fact that we went up as champions last season and now look! blues, lucky to get promoted last year, have now overtaken us. Burnley, up through play offs, clearly a better side than us and with less investment. We meanwhile have gone backwards. The sweet flowing wide play of last season has been strangled by narrowing the pitch. Trying to do a Stoke, but we aren’t Stoke, we are Wolves. MM has made some foolish choices in selection and tactics. And the choping and changing on Sunday smacks of a desparate headless chicken who realises his days are numbered. Lets hope so. I know not all agree but why don’t we give the Hoff a few games. His scoring record is good. No one else is getting goals and we can’t bring anyone in until January. Give the beast a go he can’t do worse than what is being done at the moment. Doyle is quality and is so different to the Hoff. Maybe, just maybe the two of them up front will ‘hit it Hoff’. A comment I posted earlier today…

…I think this season is definately about damage limitation..Wolves as we are led to believe have a healthy bank balance bolstered by premiership tv revenue. Working on the 07/08 season Derby picked up 29.1 million for finishing bottom with parachute payments amassing to between 6.5 to 11.4 million for the first 2 seasons out of the premiership. Interesting to note Boltons 08/09 accounts showed that although they finished 13th in the league, they lost 13.2 million and there net debts rose to 64 million. Personally, this brings me back to what I said earlier.. just like our economy.. I think the state of a lot of the lower end premiership teams is dire.. a bubble ready to pop. No wonder a two tiered premiership has been touted. Damage limitation with just a slight sniff of survival? We’ll see shortly!

Unfortunately Business is business! Debt for me is gonna have its say sooner or later in this league.

Please Ebanks love you to pieces but can you please stay on your feet when he gets ball and stop crossing the ball across the pitch we need to move forward and not backwards and across and you need to stop hoofing the ball up the field. At the start of the season you were playing the ball on the ground and when you do that you are a good side. |I know the likes of Chelsea,Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool etc are going to be difficult but we should not have the attitude that we are not going to get anything out of them because at the end of the day any team is beatable and if you watch there passing its on the floor not hoofing up field and if we play like I know we can we can beat the likes of these teams. Come on lads get your act together because yesterday you were a disgrace. I dont think getting rid of MM is the answer but the team and MM must get their heads together and discuss what is best for the team and if like some of you fans say, that the boys are not happy then it should be up for discussion. Its been an awful start to the season. I dont advocate knee jerk reactions but in this case I dont believe we will stay in the league with a manager as inept and stubborn as Mick.

Curbishley and Copell top the list.

The way i look at it its exactly the same as 2003 Sir Jack thought we wre good enough to compete in the premier league, remember we beat newcastle in the cup in a one off game and bless him he thought we could compete week in week out. Its the same this time we all thought 4 or 5 of our players would step up to the mark in the premiership but unfortunately they have,nt and the most dissapointing one for me is Seb, you dont become a bad striker over night i think he needs a break and go and get his head right. Apart from Doyle the players bought in are no better or have,nt been given a chance, there,s no balance in the side and we look disjointed. Unless we bring some experience in in january i fear the worst. Mick has got to go to Moxy and say we tried the cheap option now we need to spend some real money and bring some quality in..

Come on everybody and get behind your club. Get rid of those rose tinted specs and accept the truth. Get rid off the board, Moxey and the so called management The club throughout cannot compete in this league. I don’t blame Morgan, I think he is blindly led by McCarthy and Moxey. He is nieve where football is concerned, he has done what we all dream of, owning your own football team, but there it stops. Like most of us we wouldn’t have a clue.
MM has never been and never will be a top class manager, he can get you out of the championship, but there it ends. I have support the Wolves since 1966, and seen some dire years. But since we have grown has a club I have expected better since the late 90′s early 2000′s. We have not improved a great deal since then. This club needs quality players whatever the cost, at this present time apart form Doyle I can’t see many others. I did not renew my season ticket after the season before last because I hadn’t watched so much dross for about 20 years under MM. Alright I missed out last season, but although we got there it was god damn hard work. When all was talking about we have a side to survive, I was wandering what type of football they had seen previously. It was obvious even with the pre season signings we were lightweight. You have to compete in this league and buy premiership quality, 1,2 or maybe three players would have been enough, including Doyle. If we struggled then try so more in January. I do not like McCarthy, he cannot handle big name players and likes the yes men about him. Lokk at Pulis at Stoke, he has bought players who could be an handful and even got Peter Reid to support him. Who does big Mick have? Clipboard O’Connor. This club has the ambition to be a yo yo club. I am not prepared to accept that, get rid of MM and his mates, including Moxey. Okay we will still get relegated, but we wont have to go through this season in and season out.

A few people who have posted on this site seem to think that Moxey and the rest of the Board are blameless for our current plight. They need to consider that Moxey and the Board laid down the financial parameters the wage levels and caps on transfer fees.I am sure this resulted in Mick Mc Carthy not getting his main tagets other than Doyle. Moxey will always go for the cheaper option and to counter this the club badly needs a Director of Football on the Board. This doesnot absolve Mick from some blame, because he did say he was happy with the signings made.

MM has lost his way. No comprehensible team selection – no comprehensible tactics.

We don’t appear to be doing our homework on forthcoming opponents, otherwise we would know how big their defenders are, etc!

Hoof to the Hoff, but not our vertically challenged strikers. Yesterday’s tactics were as ill-thought as they were baffling.

I don’t like players being the club mouthpiece as, on this occasion, Ward is. The club’s management hierarchy appears to have little bottle by sending the troops to the front to explain what they want us to believe.

I’m sorry I believe a manager is ultimately reponsible for results and ours have been utter crap. As a Wolf for 35 years, Sammy Chung was sacked in Nov. 78 when we were third from bottom, in came Johnny Barnwell from the lower leagues and kept us up. The Club is far bigger than poxey Mick McCarthy his record is a disgrace at this level. I can’t understand why everybody is getting so excited. Mr Moxeys’ business plan is working splendidly. We havea Premiership team being paid Championship wages. If we go down, then there is a huge parachute payment that will be all profit.

The only area of concern is with the players, where it was hoped that some of them would earn the respect of Premiership managers and attract profitable transfer fees if the team is demoted. However, we still have some months to go and a few may yet come good and measure up to Premiership standards.

For those calling for Mr McCarthy to be sacked just stop and think. He has a contract and that will have to be paid out if he is sacked, so it will not happen as that would affect the bottom line profit.

All round Mr Moxey deserves congratulations in turning WWFC into a very profitable business, and he truly deserves the £1M+ bonus his efforts of the last two seasons will earn him and the board.

It is a time for reflection on the goals set and channeled all the resources to up the ante and a rebound in the team play. A commitment that is team Wolves to re-establish the confidence of the fans that had given their loyal support through thick and thin.

If true, and Moxey does own the catering at the Mol – Why not all fans buy their drink and food BEFORE each home game and boycott Moxey’s pocket – that would hurt far more than any chants etc

Moxey should be made to endure the fans anger at his “Job done” comments – but in reality does anyone really believe that he goes home as upset as many of us in the stands???

These people are in this for a reason – our money at games

I was at the game on sunday and yes it was a poor performance. I kno we’ve had injuries but it no excuse for constantly playing poeple out of position. The back four in question. The two full backs, both being centre halfs anyway swapped over after about twenty minutes, which was basically the time it took them to settle into the game. So then they had to do it all again! Ronald zubar who we purchace in the close season plays at right back? I thought he was a centre half? Look at lee bowyers goal on sunday. Totally unmarked because the midfield had dropped back to form the defencive line leaving him totally unmarked! And the reason why they dropped back?? Because they have no faith in the defence! Some consistencey is need at the back, with the right player playing in his natural position! The book stops at mccarthy for that I’m affraid…

i hope those transfer rumours on ES are just that. We cant be seriously interested in rob hulse? He made NO impact at prem level under smegson, and the real clue is that smegson hasnt re-signed him at bolton. This team is dying out for some quality, leadership and experience.
MM, Moxley. Norgan YOU CANT GET ANY OF THESE ON THE CHEAP! or by looking at lower divisions. Under jones we had a worldwide scouting and recruitment of players which was working. I remember Camara, Olinfinana, carlos kamino, who couldnt get a work permiting the end. Now you all have your views on these players but i think they are substantially better than what we have in the squad now.
MM if you keep your job, and get to January – NO CHEAP BARGAIN BASEMENT 2nd division defenders, strikers, midfielders PLEASE in the transfer window.

LW – Do you honestly think Owen Coyle would leave Burnley and join a team 4 points adrift of safety? There are no quick fixes, bringing a manager in mid-season won’t suddenly turn you into world beaters. The fact is the whole Wolves team look out of their depth, the time to prepare for Premiership football is before the start of the season and you didn’t do that sufficiently.

You can only make minimal changes in January. The problem is the quality players you need will be snapped up by bigger clubs.
