Kiely wants to stay as keeper coach
Saturday 28th November 2009, 11:59AM GMT.
Albion keeper Dean Kiely is keen to extend his stay at The Hawthorns – as a coach and a player.
The Baggies veteran is hoping to keep his role as goalkeeping coach when his current contract runs out at the end of the season.
And the 39-year-old is also keen to prolong his playing career into next season, despite losing the No 1 spot to protŽgŽ Scott Carson.
“I don’t think I am out to graze and I don’t think I am finished yet,” he said.
“I think in all the games I have played this season I have made a contribution.
“I can’t change my birth certificate but I would say ‘look at my body fat, my pre-season and my form in training and in the games.’
“I am thoroughly enjoying coaching. I have heard people say it’s very difficult to combine the roles, but I think that has been said by people who haven’t tried it.
“If football is something you love it’s fine, and as it turns out I have probably been coaching since I have been in my early-20s because it’s in my nature to work things out and help people out.
“For me to make it structured and put sessions on isn’t a problem.
“There haven’t been any talks but I am very calm and cool about it. I am not jumping around knocking on people’s doors because I like to think my football and my training speaks for itself.
“Hopefully my attitude and my commitment speaks for itself and if people want that around that club, great, and if they don’t somebody else will because I think I will offer a lot to whoever employs me.”
Kiely admitted his frustration at being out of the team but insisted he is happy to help England hopeful Carson improve in his role as goalkeeping coach.
“Last season was the first time I have sat on the bench in a 22-year career so that shows how my career has gone,” he said.
“But people make decisions and I have to respect them, which is what I do. But that doesn’t stop me from maintaining the high standards I have set throughout my career.
“My goalkeeping and the way I conduct myself hasn’t changed just because I am not in the team.
“They are standards I set for myself, not for anybody else, and I am fiercely proud of them.”

Looks like we have our goal poacher. Cox already has two at half time! I’ll swear I could hear Sir Terence singing ‘boing boing’ in a plummy, aristocratic voice. Beacon doing a grand job with Bomber Brown.
