Apathy is winner as 163 reply on mayors
Saturday 28th November 2009, 10:27AM GMT.
A tiny number of voters responded to Black Country council consultations on whether an all-powerful elected mayor should take the helm.
A total of 163 people responded in Sandwell, Dudley and Walsall, which have a combined population of 847,899. The response equates to less than 0.02 per cent of the population in the three districts.
In Sandwell, 21 people gave their views, while 42 replied in Dudley, and 100 in Walsall. Of those who did get involved, two thirds were in favour of keeping the cabinet system. Five per cent of each borough’s population voting in favour of mayors would have triggered a referendum.
Wolverhampton has yet to release the results of its consultation.
Sandwell Council’s acting leader Councillor Steve Eling said: “The cost to the council has been very little because it was advertised by press releases to all local media and on the council’s own website.”
Dudley’s deputy leader Councillor Les Jones said: “My gut reaction to this is that most people don’t really care about how we do it – they are interested in having their services delivered at a reasonable cost.”
Each council will now decide on its future governing arrangements.

Most people are probably unaware of the consultation and those who were are most likely more interested in heeping their own lives together, or see it as another possible extra layer of bureaucracy.

1) could not have put it better myself. Just hope come the elections the people of Sandwell remember The Public, “Duckgate”, and the St Georges Parade, Wolverhampton voters recall the ticketing of one group of people at West Park, while others are let off scot free, and the fiasco’s that have been the fountain and new bus/rail station, and Walsall who believe its right to ticket old soldiers attending a remembrance parade. Lets get every sitting councilor out, and replace them with one’s who know in no uncertain terms if they fail to give the electorate what they want and refuse to listen to the majorities rather than minorities, they will be out next time too!

Meanwhile, a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty was denied us. But then that’s typical New Labour – purposely fail to consult you about the really big things whilst fobbing you off with a questionaire about trivia!

What consultation? First I’ve heard about it. Maybe this is what’s happened in Walsall, Sandwell and Dudley. To paraphrase Douglas Adams, was the consultation announced in a basement behind a locked door labelled, “Beware of the leopard”?

I am suddenly reminded ot “The Hitchkiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
By the rules set the present system cannot be replace with a mayoral one. Good. I live in a borough with an elected mayor and it is a disaster. He cannot be challenged and because it is a Labour Rotten Borough he cannot be removed.

advertised on website where??

Advertised on Dudley Councils website? Who looks there, its like Pravda, full of good news about what the saintly councillors are doing. Nothing bad ever happens, its party propaganda on the council tax. I’m not suprised no one replied. When does Dudley council ever listen to the public? Its consulted over libraries, lesisure centres, schools and then simply ignored the public. We just want rid of this rotten bunch, not more chances for them to dip into the expenses trough!

Well that’s strange that we never heard about it till now!!!!!!!
Sandwell Council are only too eager to send round glossy publications to each house, telling us how good they are at saving the planet, its some rubbish about trees and open spaces etc, I don’t bother to read it because its all propaganda extolling the wonderful council and they send out 6 or 8 page publications telling us how wonderful the Sandwell Patient Care Trust is doing under Sandwell’s Labour Council, strange that because I couldn’t get an out of hours doctor to come and visit my wife who had collapsed in the bath, they were more than willing to call an ambulance out for me, anything that saved the doctor having to make a visit to a seriously ill patient.
We even have local Forums that people can attend, to give us the opportunity to have a face to face meeting with their elected representatives, but to find out when there are taking place is like trying to find out off an MP, how much they have fiddled in expenses, I think the people whose job it is to put out that information have signed the official secrets act so have to keep it quiet.
Because it’s such a well kept secret, usually at these meeting there are more council representatives than public, and that’s no accident, the last thing these councillors want to do is to have to face the people who are paying for them to have a luxury lifestyle.

Well, I’m afraid I’d never heard about this until now, so how on Earth was I supposed to respond if they didn’t bother letting us know they wanted to hear our opinions.
Well, they say they want to hear them, its not like they’ll actually listen.

The what for who to do what now? Never heard anything about any of this.
We all know councillors are not particularly sharp or in touch with reality.
But even they should know if you don’t write to people and tell them when and where and why, the people will not respond.

First I’ve heard of this. Walsall resident – don’t recall seeing or hearing anything.

all “consultations” are given minimal publicity because they dont care what the public wants anyway ( lisbon treaty anyone ).
