Old campus is reduced to rubble

The last remnants of the former Walsall College are about to be demolished to make way for a new Tesco superstore.
Most of the buildings have now been pulled down at the St Paul’s site which will be completely cleared in the next few weeks.
DSM Demolition is carrying out work on the site which started in September and should see all of the former buildings removed by next month with other clearance work due to be finished early next year.
Project manager Paul Ferran said: “There are just the two buildings left and they will be up for the next couple of weeks as we are doing groundwork.
“Everything has gone to plan so far and we are actually ahead at the moment. There have been no problems with the project so far. We expect to leave the site in January.”
Among the first stages to be completed was tearing down the biggest teaching blocks and also the dismantling of the prominent tower block. The four-storey high east wing was flattened along with chimneys, a boiler house and an engineering area.
The neighbouring former pub The Builder’s Arms, which had become a drugs den, has also been removed.
The college, which closed in the summer, has now been replaced by the new Wisemore Campus in Littleton Street West as part of a £64 million land swap agreement.
Tesco received full planning permission for a 10,880 sq metre store which also includes 750 car parking spaces, cafe and offices earlier this year.
