Embrace the ‘R’ word urges Mick

Thursday 26th November 2009, 11:50AM GMT.

STOKE V WOLVES 19 GD 31Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has called on his players to embrace the fight against the ‘R’ word this season.

Thirteen games into the campaign, the manager took the bold step of telling his players they are in a relegation fight and could go down after last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at leaders Chelsea.

A second-bottom position, a point from safety, could worsen if Bolton win at Fulham and West Ham beat Burnley on Saturday before Wolves host Birmingham on Sunday.

McCarthy defended his decision to paint a stark picture after a third of the campaign and believes his players should relish the scrap for Premier League survival.

The Wolves boss said: “There was no point messing about. The players have to embrace it, understand it, recognise it and play with that.

“You can end up almost with a fear of saying it, not wanting to mention the ‘R’ word. I’ve said ‘that’s rubbish’ because that’s what we’re fighting against.

“If we’re in the bottom two after 13 games, that’s where we are, so let’s understand it, recognise it and deal with it.

“We haven’t played with fear and maybe that’s to our credit because not mentioning our position can almost be the best-kept secret.

“Players may think ‘We’re playing today and no one’s mentioned it, thank God’ – well, I have mentioned it, so let’s recognise it. We need to get points.”

Despite seven games without a win, McCarthy denied players’ confidence was affected.

He declared: “They’re fine, there’s no problems.”

With fellow strugglers Bolton following Blues into Molineux, McCarthy acknowledges Wolves are under pressure to get points.

But the manager denied there was a knife-edge atmosphere at Molineux.

He added: “I don’t think that’s the case here. I don’t feel any negative vibes at all.”

Relegation battle? Doesn’t sound like a job done Jez does it??

With home and away season tickets, travel, programs, shirts etc. I expect to spend north of 2 grand on Wolves this season. All to be short changed by Moxey and Morgan is their desire to rip off the fans and pocket the Premiership money. With these two in charge Wolves will never able to establish themselves in the Premiership – we’ll never pay the wages to get the top players and will be left with no hopers like Surman, Halford, Zubar and Milijas.

Unfortunately they’ll be plenty of negative vibes if you don’t win at home against these teams!

For 13 games the fans have been patient but we need results and you cant keep on being given time with games running out.

There’s now a ridiculous amount of pressure to win the next three home games, coz we aint gonna be picking up any points on the road, lets not kid ourselves.

The only way we can hope to avoid relegation is by getting at least 7 points, ideally 9 against the 3 B’s.

However, I still don’t think we have what is considered our best team out on the pitch, and a club like us can’t afford to carry lesser players. The summer signings have been poor apart from Doyle.

If we don’t get the results I’d like a new manager in before January so he can bring new players and ideas into the club as I feel performances in 2009 have not been great, even taking into account promotion.

Lets hope the players don’t bottle it on sunday and they get the elusive 3 points we’re all hoping for!

Totally agree with Mick on this. We were always going to be one of about six teams who could potentially go down. The long-hard winter is fast appoaching and I think Burnleys squad depth will start to show, Wigan, Hull, Westham, Bolton, Portsmouth, Blues will also know that they are well and truly in a relegation dog-fight. We will come out of the bottom 3 and fall back in at times but come May we will survive. WE ARE WOLVES.

Almost 33% of the season gone and I am sorry but unless something quite miraculous happens, I can see us staying in the bottom 3!
The Brummies will soon be in town and they have got a good defence and are becoming masters of the the 1-0 and as we seem to be unable to score at all, an away win must be on the cards.
As for the forthcoming Burnley and Bolton games, well Burnley cannot win away but knowing our history against teams with that kind of form, they are bound to win at Molineux, so that leaves Bolton, our bogey team.
We have a terrible record against them in recent times and who would be surprised if they too were to defeat us?
What a pessimist some of you are thinking?
That maybe, but realistically considering our inability to win games, with leaking goals like a sieve and being unable to hit a barn door from 5 paces, where are the wins going to come from? I just cannot summon up enough optimism to believe we can win any of those 3 games. The best I can think of is perhaps 2 draws and a defeat.
Mick McCarthy needs to sort out the team fast and if necessary ‘put the shutters up’ and grind out draws until the January window opens when we can hopefully bring in some experienced Prem players… then we may be able to make a good job of staying in the Premier League otherwise it will be a case of down we go – again!

McCarthy you just happy to take your pay check, because after all you are never wrong!!!! (only most of the time)
Moxley, the middle man who is just a glorified accountant,
Fans, once again we pay for failure

I for one saw this coming, we are turning into a club with no ambition, lack of real investment has not come. Its boys against men out there anyone can see that, we have to be on top form to get anything out of our games, but will we have enough to stay up!!! doughtful aint it!!! If Morgan realy cared about the club as much as the fans do he would invest or atleast give an explanation of what his plans are for the club. Doing it on the cheap only works with decent managers if atall, I can see McCarthys plan but why doesnt he tell us that were going to gave to be relaged before his game plan actualy works, by that time he will be long gone milking some other club for the use of his average skills in football management. I fear that we are in the middle of a vicious circle and we will loose all our half decent players before long. McMarthy you are not good enough at this level !!! Morgan please invest, and moxley i will never ever forgive you for giving my seat away for them lot to abuse.
As for sunday its a must win, all the bluenoses out there are confident of atleast a point lets atleast try and shut them up!!!

There are negative vibes beneath the surface, but the fans are mostly still positive and behind the team.

All we need is some goals. To play positively, to attack in numbers and to actually have a shot from further out than 3 yards.

We never get to 3 yards out, so our ‘shots on target’ column is pathetic.

We need more positivity around the place. If you see half a chance to shoot – then go for it.

Our early goal concessions aren’t helping matters either, leaving us with a mountain to climb after a few minutes.

Between Stearman, Berra, Zubar, Craddock, Foley, Mancienne and Ward we should have a tight enough defence for this division. All we need is a consistent back four with a good understanding.

Less changes, more positive attacking. Let’s get some goals!

Interesting that there has been no word from Moxey recently. Is he still satisfied with the work he did pre-season?!

Very few positives from my perspective. There’s hardly a player who has enhanced their status or value since last season…a low number of points, a high goal tally against, only a few goals scored and hardly any chances per game created.

I wanted to respond to Martin Swain’s article earlier in the week when he said that staying in the division was in our own hands…well, of course it is. That’s true of any team down the bottom at this stage of the season.

The other point Martin made was that we were in a better position because of the “young and hungry” brigade. Well I’m sorry but in a fight, I’ll take the aged legs of Messrs Irwin, Ince and Rae any day of the week!

MM has had a fair amount of cash to spend and up to now has decided to sit most of his signings on the bench. So does he now think they aren’t as good as he first thought?

Constant team changes don’t seem to help much either. All this “horses for courses” rubbish. What a load of old &%&^$%$

We’ve had at least four different right backs so far, ZUBAR, STEARMAN, FOLEY, HALFORD, same goes for left back, ELOKOBI, HILL, WARD, STEARMAN.

Why isn’t MAIERHOFER getting a go, he aint gonna score sat on the bench watching Ebanks working hard but getting absolutely nowhere near a goal.

Milijas looks a good footballer but never gets any decent game time(you signed him mick). Only two decent wingers, Jarvis and Kightly, either don’t play or he sticks Kightly on the left wing.

He doesn’t know his best team , because he doesn’t have one, he didn’t sort the job out during the summer and now what most outsiders think about MM is looking correct and that is , He’s not a Premier League quality mangager.

Team effort and commitment can’t be faulted but team selection and tactics are hopeless.

The reason why were we are is because of TACTICS & SIGNINGS!

Our tactics has been woeful. Take Everton game for eg. 1 nil up with 5 mins to go… .another manager would have taken off a striker and put another defender or defensive midfielder to shut up shop. We didnt and we got punished.
4-4-2 away from home. Stupidity from the manager, we need to spoil teams away from home and then try to change it with around 20 mins to go to try and nick all 3 points. 3 at the back against chelsea… SAY NO MORE! Daft!

The tranfers policy thus far hasnt entirely worked but saying that, we havent as yet played with all our players fit. But players like Halford, Big George, The Hoff, Milljas have not made the grade! If only we had a spine of premiership experience and the only 1 we have is craddock.

I agree with a previous post, we should have the S word SURVIVAL not the R word. MM is losing faith in his own managerial skills, mumbling along with this words are sometimes comical and honest which I cant knock him for that but, outside that he is being shown unless results improve to be out of his depth and his back room staff is looking threadbare.

    Team for saturday will be:-

If you are climbing a mountain, do you keep looking down, telling yourself ” I must work harder to climb this mountain or I will fall” or do you look up at the mountain above and work the best direction to get to the top, therefore achieving your survival & your goal.

Did any proper Wolves fans expect us to be cruising it in the Premiership? We would have expected more points out of West Ham, Hull and Pompey and did not happen. On the plus side we won at Wigan – who have beat Chelsea and Villa – and got points out of Everton, The Vile and Stoke. Blues are not world beaters and neither are Bolton and Burnley, so let’s stand and be counted. 7 or 9 points out of these games put a total different complexion on the situation that we are in.
Get into the Noses from the off and see what happens? One thing for sure is that although they have a tight defence, they do not have too much up front. Pace must be brought back in, in the shape of Zubar and Mancienne. Castillo was poor last week and must be dropped!

I don’t agree with people asking for Mick to go now, why should he? He’s the man that got us here and even out of blind loyalty should be given at least one season to see what he can do. Everyone is so quick to judge when managers are given the sack early and preach about Ferguson at Man Utd etc, so why not apply that logic in this situation?

There is so much doom and gloom around the Wolves at the moment you would think its May and not November. Granted we are struggling but why would anyone expect us not to? I really don’t understand what some people thought our chances were. I personally think that as a club we would not be able to attract better players than we have now, or even a better management team. Face it, the sleeping giant tag has long worn off, we are now just mediocre, at best. Last year’s team was by far and away the best I have ever seen and the whole seasons excitement only matched from when I first started in the old Div 4 days. I’m definitely going to enjoy the premier league experience no matter what, even relegation wouldn’t be the be all and end all, It seems quite a few teams have to be a yo-yo club before becoming established.

I’m not saying we don’t need to improve to survive, I think we need to improve massively but I have the (hanging by a thread!) belief that this can come from within the squad. These next couple of games are vital, the below is about Hull.

“They scrapped to victory over Stoke, rallied superbly to draw with West Ham, and swept aside Everton in a 30-minute blitz which left David Moyes’ side with too much to do.”

This higlights our shortcomings so far (dropped points aginst W Ham/Everton) but shows there still can be hope. Now, don’t tell me Hull have infinitely more quality than we do in their squad, it can be pulled around!

So, all this “worthy of a great club” / “I’ve spent 2 grand” (your choice) balderdash, forget about it, we have got the personnel we deserve and they need to be backed. I just hope that this place is a good release for the angry people so they can come to the Mol with good vibes on Sunday!

    Keep the Faith!

There seems to be 2 opinions here…those who think there’s still time to sack Mick & rescue the season….like Portsmouth have done with sacking Hart & appointing Grant (v good choice btw), and those who sticking with Mick.

Personally I’m with the latter. I actually think he’s done ok in the circumstances & was more than happy before the 2 unwinnable games that, surprise, we didn’t win.

Anyway, whether you like Mick & the 3M’s or not they are here to stay… & won’t consider sacking him until we have failed to get promoted next season.

    Deal with it!

All that whinging in the world won’t change that, all it will do is drain the players confidence and accelerate our demise.

When the crowd starts getting on their backs they will become afraid of making mistakes & won’t even want the ball. It certainly won’t win us games.

As Mick says the next home games are huge, but our season won’t depend on them. March, April & May has most of our relegation 6 pointers, & hopefully by then we won’t be too far adrift to save ourselves.

Ikeme gone off again on loan to Sheff Utd.,
Surely he must be given another chance, were obviously not relying on prem experience to keep us up, or could this be another Mark (Judas)Davies waiting to happen?

31 and all you other Happy Clappers, remove your gold tinted spectales – we made poor signings, lack ambition and quality and have a Muppet of a manager who has no idea of tactics and team selection at this level.
It says it all that Cradock is our star player and some fans waiting for Ward’s return – unbeleiveable – gone backwards and probaly going down. The 3 M’s are in it together – too busy watching the balance sheet at our expense – SACK em all!!!

I say it again, hurry up & get fit Dave Jones…you would be great support on the left side for Matty Jarvis..thats providing we would have anyone in the box to meet his crosses.
I think all the pre-season hype has gotten to the club. What they need to do is knuckle down & put some pride back into the side. Practice scoring goals on the training ground, hey it might work on the field of play.
What has happened to Izzie….does anyone know. I see we have sent our other promising left back out on loan, so we now have Friend & Malone playing for other clubs. These two are better than what we have!! Muppet

Mixed bag on here tonight, eh?

What is up with you lot? We have the youngest, hungriest, most exiting Team at Wolves since the 70′s. We hav a board who, despite the inane ramblings of the South Bank Massive, are doing an excellent job during the worst recession in history.

Do you lot WANT to end up like Leeds, Charlton and Southampton? No, you don’t. So put up & shut up.

We have a core support most clubs would kill for. We are a well run club, with a great Manager, great young players and a solid future. Why ruin that with short-term, short-sightedness.

    KEEP THE FAITH…UP THE WOLVES!!!

    Subs…

SEB on the bench? Like Kights the bloke is struggling to make an impact – maybe 20 mins at a time might give him more chance.

Morgan hasn’t got what it takes to sack McCarthy. Meanwhile , Pompey show us how it’s done. Patience is wearing very thin. 100% effort and losing os acceptable, rolling over and dying, such as the last 2 games…isn’t.He should go now, 3 games time, it will be too late

Lets embrace SURVIVAL! Think we need to change tactics quite drastically, and stick with a side for a few games. Also not sure if we can do this, but the pitch at Molineux needs to be increased in length and width, just no space if we get into the final third.

Team for next few games (3-5-2)

    Hennessey
    Zubar, Craddock, Berra
    Jarvis, Castillo, Milijas, Henry, Doyle
    Ebanks-Blake, The Hoff

Milijas behind the front two and given a license to attack with Castillo and Henry doing the dirty stuff. Doyle cutting in from the left so we can take advantage of his industry.

    Keep the faith.

Malta Wolves: Ive never said players wont come here because they dont want to live in the area. If you’re not a relegation contender and you can afford to pay the wages, premiership players will live anywhere. My point is quite simple and is demonstrated equally by the transfer dealings of all three relegated clubs – the premiership quality that all newly promoted teams require will not come in season 1 or even season 2 (Hull) – fact ! It doesn’t matter how much money Morgan might throw at them, they will have other offers from teams that are more likely to stay up with equal amounts of cash.

As to why Burnley & Blues are (so far) in a better position is up for debate, but hey, lets try and beat blues and bolton and see how things look then.
