Gun robbery terror at city bookmakers
Wednesday 25th November 2009, 4:59PM GMT.
Armed raiders burst into a betting shop in Wolverhampton and threatened a terrified member of staff with a revolver before making off with hundreds of pounds from the till, West Midlands Police said today.
The daylight robbery at the Tote Bookmakers in Lower Villiers Street, Blakenhall, was carried out by two men wearing balaclavas.
One man pointed a revolver-style handgun at the duty manager behind the counter who was ordered to open the till. A customer was also threatened.
The manager handed over the contents of the cash register, which amounted to just over £400.
George Primarolo, of Totes Bookmakers, said today the manager was extremely shaken by the attack at 10.15am yesterday.
“Fortunately, despite the threat of the gun, no-one was hurt which is the main priority. Not much money was taken as we never keep large amounts in the till.
“This was a frightening experience for the two people involved. Any help the public can give in tracing this pair would be greatly appreciated,” he added.
Police say one robber is 6ft, in his 20s, possibly of mixed race or black, with a light complexion. He wore a dark-sleeved top and dark tracksuit bottoms and gloves. The second raider is in his teens, around 5ft 4in, and wore dark clothing.
Anyone with information should call CID at Bilston Street on 0845 113 5000.
