Brunt rules out goal celebration

Chris Brunt Celebrates his goalAlbion’s leading scorer Chris Brunt has vowed not to celebrate if he adds to his growing tally of goals at former club Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The Baggies winger is desperate to increase his five-goal total on his return to Hillsborough, but he admitted today he would ‘think twice’ about celebrating out of respect for the Owls.

Brunt spent three years in the Steel City, effectively launching his professional career with Wednesday having been released as a teenager by Middlesbrough.

And he admitted: “The time I had at Sheffield Wednesday was a great time. I’ve got a lot of respect for the club and the fans and the management staff , so I would have to think twice about celebrating.

“But I will be trying to score because three points is what we’re going there for to keep us ticking along and hopefully get the bigger prize at the end of the season.

“The club was always good to me and I enjoyed my time there.

“They were the club that gave me my foothold in football. I had four managers in three seasons there, which was not ideal, but it was a great experience.

“It’s a massive club and they’ve got some good people. Last season they did well after struggling the season before.

“At home they are always a decent side so it will be a tough game for us.

“I haven’t been back for a couple of seasons now so it will be nice to go back. I got a decent reception last time so hopefully it will be the same again this time.”

Brunt’s fellow winger, Jerome Thomas, is also looking to earn bragging rights over a former team-mate after spending time in the Arsenal youth academy with Wednesday right-back Frankie Simek.

“He was at Arsenal with me but he is a few years younger,” said Thomas. “I remember him being there and I will have to give him a torrid time on Saturday. There were no famous battles with him, but it is all about individual battles.

“I know when I go out on a Saturday I have to win my battle against the right-back. That’s how I look at it, and if every one of our team wins his battle against his opponent that will help us win. You have to go into each game looking to win your individual battle.”
