Spike the dog impaled on railings
Tuesday 24th November 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
This aptly-named dog found himself in a spot of bother after becoming impaled on a set of railings.
Spike the crossbreed collie pierced his leg on the metal gate in Glyn Farm Road, Quinton, and had to be rescued by firefighters after the bizarre incident.
RSPCA chiefs say five-year-old Spike had become stuck on the fence while trying to jump over it.
He also had scuffed his paws from trying to free himself before firefighters came to save the day.
RSCPA animal welfare officer Scott Vanes said: “Spike must have been absolutely terrified.
“I was shocked when I arrived to see him trapped in this way. He was so quiet throughout the rescue and when I transported him to Birmingham Animal Hospital.
“We are amazed and delighted that he only suffered minor injury.
“He suffered some blood loss and was taken into theatre for his wounds to be cleaned.
“He was given antibiotics and pain relief and his injury is healing well.”
Mr Vanes added: “We don’t know if Spike has an owner, so anyone who knows anything about him should please get in touch. with us at the RSPCA.
“If we could reunite him with his rightful owner then that would be the best ending to this story.”
Spike has now recovered in hospital from what were only minor injuries to his right back leg.
RSCPA spokeswoman Judith Haw said: “It’s a bit of a mystery how he got there, but it looks like he’s tried to jump over the fence and hasn’t quite managed it.
“It certainly looks accidental and doesn’t appear to involve anything deliberate. The fence went through his leg but it was only a minor injury. It could have been a lot worse.”
