One win can change all for striker

Kevin DoyleWolves striker Kevin Doyle insists one win is all the team need to change their season.

Back-to-back home games against Birmingham this Sunday and Bolton the following Saturday lie in wait, after heavy defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea have left them second bottom of the Premier League and a point from safety.

But the £6.5million club record signing from Reading reckons three points could transform their fortunes.

He said: “It’s still very tight and one win could be massive for us. One win could get us out of the bottom three and put someone else in there. We’ve got to keep our heads.

“Our problem was we had three draws in a row which were good results but got us nowhere. We have then had two very difficult games and other teams will have those.

‘But, without writing off those two games, we’re at home and have more of a chance of winning. Birmingham will be a very difficult game, we know that.

“They came up with us last year and have been fighting for their lives as well.”

The Republic of Ireland international is set to return to the starting line-up against Blues, after missing the Chelsea defeat due to the draining effects of Ireland’s two-legged World Cup play-off exit against France.

Doyle is relishing stepping out in front of the Molineux masses again, after experiencing their loyalty and noise in equal measures from the 3,000-strong sell-out contingent at Stamford Bridge.

He believes Wolves supporters have also shown plenty of understanding, given the huge task they faced against two of the ‘big four.’

But the 26-year-old admits the players need the fans to stick by them again against Blues – even if the team falls behind against Blues in a game which has now become a must-win fixture.

He said: The fans have been brilliant through these last two games. I was sitting in the stand on Saturday and they were the loudest of the two sets of fans even at 4-0 down.

“They understand and realise what it was like, we were playing Chelsea, and we could have been Wigan losing 9-1 at Tottenham – that puts things into perspective.

“We need them behind us again on Sunday whatever happens. If we go behind we can still come back and win. We’ll stay positive and if the crowd can do the same and stay behind us, as they have been, it will be a massive help.”
